Heart Disease Prevention - #30
Heart disease in the U.S. remains the #1 leading cause of death for men and women. According to the CDC, 1 person dies every 36 seconds for cardiovascular disease. 1 in every 4 deaths is caused by heart disease and costs the US over $350B every year. By the time someone sees a cardiologist, they’ve already had a cardiac related event. Risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, drinking too much alcohol, living a sedentary life, eating unhealthy foods and here’s a couple of risk factors that you may not be correlating to heart disease, poor sleep and menopause in women. Now that I’m in peri-menopause at 54, I think about the stats on women who are transitioning through their menopausal years and how the risk of heart disease increases as our bodies estrogen hormone levels dip to almost nothing. Even with having a mother who had breast cancer, and survived, I worry more about heart disease for myself than breast cancer. In 2013 the NIH published a study confirming that between 2002-2011, approx. 50,000 women died as a result of dropping their hormone replacement therapy due to misguided results from the Women’s Health Initiative study in the 1990’s. Still, to this day, many women fear taking estrogen because they are stuck in an old medical paradigm that they will induce breast cancer. But, those 50,000 deaths were caused by heart disease, not breast cancer. My guest today is a Dr. Michael Twyman MD, an integrative functional medicine cardiologist, and founder of Apollo Cardiology, who’s main focus is on the prevention and early detection of heart disease. It was during his years in medical school that he became passionate about how the heart functioned and what could be done to prevent heart attacks and strokes. Utilizing the best of conventional medicine, integrative/functional medicine, quantum medicine, and biohacking, Dr. Twyman works to get to the root cause of your cardiovascular issues and live your optimal life.Dr. Twyman and I are going to talk about all things heart disease and prevention, including medical myths around cholesterol, labs and tests that should be included in your doctor visits, the relationship between menopausal women, hormones and heart health, lifestyle, including diet and exercise and some very cool red light therapy hacks that he is known for. Women's Health, Bio-Identical Hormones & Menopause - #28
If you’re around the same age as me, mid-50’s, then you have/had a mom that hit menopause around 30-40 years ago during which time many women were put on HRT during post-menopause. HRT started in the 60’s, but became very popular in the 90’s, when the first clinical trials on HRT and post-menopausal women were started (1991), called the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), launched by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. In 2002, the first results were shared declaring that HRT had more negative than beneficial effects, thus HRT use dropped dramatically in the US (by 46%). Years later, the WHI trial was reanalyzed and showed that HRT use in younger women or started in the onset of post-menopausal women (within 10 years of their last cycle) had multiple beneficial effects including reduced cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality, meaning HRT protected against all ways of dying. Needless to say, women are still confused and worried about starting HRT, or BHRT, and are struggling through this phase in their lives with symptoms such as weight gain, cognitive decline/ Alzheimer’s disease, loss of lean muscle mass, night sweats, loss of sleep, loss of libido, vaginal dryness, osteoporosis, thinning hair and more. By the time a mid-life woman gets to me, she’s already tried out several diets, takes a cocktail of anti-depressants, anti-anxiety and sleep pharmaceuticals, has lost her sex drive, gained weight causing her waist circumference to be well over 30”, placing her in the obesity-category, lost her vitality and has low self-esteem. So, just as the kids are leaving the nest for college, mom feels like crap.On today’s episode, my guest and I deep dive into women’s health, the misconceptions of HRT and BHRT, and how to best prepare yourself with the correct medical data so that you can make an informed decision for yourself. Dr. Wendie Trubow, MD, is a functional medicine gynecologist. She received her M.D. from Tufts University in 2000 and has been practicing functional medicine since 2009. Micronutrient Deficiencies and Personalized Supplementation - #25
Micronutrient deficiencies are a growing public health concern. In 2019, Cambridge University published a paper concerning micronutrient deficiencies. We’ve known for a long time that iron, iodine, and vitamin A deficiencies have been a long-term global concern, and now they are reporting that vitamin D, B12, and riboflavin (B2) are added to that list. Micronutrient deficiencies lead to poor health outcomes, and increased healthcare costs. Most people are taking supplements completely wrong. Taking too much, taking not enough, taking supplements that your body doesn't need and how they interact with pharmaceuticals and food is revealed in this episode. What the Heck is Spermidine? - #24
Leslie is a Southern Californian entrepreneur, a certified health coach and graduate of both Berkeley and Harvard, whose life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis in her 30s. When her doctors told her lupus had a life expectancy of five years and that RA could only be managed, not cured, she set out to optimize her health as best she could with safe, natural solutions. She went back to school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in NYC, became a Bulletproof coach under health pioneer Dave Asprey, and took on health coaching clients worldwide. At the same time, she began helping life science academics at European universities, including Oxford (where she lives), to raise money for their discoveries. At a meeting with one such scientist, she learned about a natural compound called spermidine, abundant in nattō, a traditional Japanese dish that she had grown up with. Spermidine was showing great promise supporting health as we age. The science was compelling – one scientist even called it “an anti-aging vitamin” in a published scientific journal – and it was safe. Still, because it was natural, food-derived, and not a drug that would bring in more money, no one was interested in promoting it. Leslie immediately wanted her octogenarian mother back home in California to take it – especially since nattō is very hard to come by. Unfortunately, spermidine wasn't available in the US (or really even known here). Spotting this unmet need, she decided to bring it to the US herself. Spermidine has been around for over 330 years in Japan and has just recently become more popular. It’s a polyamine that hits 5 of the 9 hallmarks of health. One intriguing benefit is hair growth, including eye lashes for some. It also has positive effects on deep sleep. Are Your Cells Healthy? - #23
Finding out as much information as we can on how our body is working, or not working, in relation to our genetics, our bloodwork, our cellular functioning, our nutrition and brain and heart health and more, is essential to finding out our unique health equation. In the current conventional medical paradigm, we are not exposed to such options and, thus, may not find out the precise individual treatment we would benefit from. If you are one of those people who’s been dealing with multiple health issues for years, seen multiple doctors to help you and have tried layers of pharmaceuticals, diets, and supplements with not much improvement, this is the podcast for you. One of my favorite tests is the micronutrient test from Spectracell and I want all of you to understand exactly how this information fits into your overall health and wellness. We’re also going to talk about some of the other unique tests they offer and how these fit it your journey as well.SpectraCell is a CLIA accredited laboratory that offers a proprietary blood test to healthcare providers and consumers nationwide. CLIA stands for “Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments” and regulates laboratory testing and requires clinical laboratories to be certified by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) before they can accept human samples for diagnostic testing. The Spectracell test, also known as a MicroNutrient Test, is a comprehensive assessment of a patient’s nutritional status at the cellular level. Unlike traditional serum, hair and urine tests, SpectraCell’s micronutrient testing measures how an individual’s white blood cells function in specific nutritional environments. As a result, individual differences in metabolism, age, genetics, health, prescription drug usage, absorption rate and other factors are taken into consideration when assessing cellular nutritional status. To learn more about Spectracell Laboratories:website: https://www.spectracell.com/IG: https://www.instagram.com/spectracelllabs/FB: https://www.facebook.com/SpectraCell/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWjjmPS-xhQ6v6WDzPaueAQTwitter: https://twitter.com/SpectraCellLab
