Turning Hair Loss into Hair Growth - #34
If you’re experiencing hair loss, this episode is for you. I have suffered for over 20 years with on-again, off-again, female pattern hair loss, or Androgenic Alopecia. This type of hair loss in men and women is generally caused by hormonal changes, aging, and genetics. Hormonal changes in women could be triggered by using birth control, going through menopause, and taking Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), or Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). In fact, most women experience hair loss during their menopausal years. The main difference between men and women with pattern hair loss, is just that, the pattern in which hair is lost. For women, it results in a wider part down the middle, thinning around the crown and temples. For men, hair loss is more focused on a receding hair line that moves towards the back until bald. Either way, it’s devastating. While some men rock a bald head and it’s more socially acceptable, women want full, lush, thick, and shiny hair all over their heads. There are other forms of hair loss, including Telogen Effluvium, when significantly more hairs move from the growing phase to the shedding phase and can occur after a traumatic or stressful experience, such as going through a divorce, death of a loved one, massive weight loss from dieting, surgery, and childbirth. When my hair loss started over 27 years ago, it was during the decade I birthed 5 of my kids. If you’re living with an autoimmune condition, you may also experience hair loss. If you’re malnourished, undereating, or lacking to consume enough protein, you may also experience hair loss. As you can see, there are many biological pathways that can lead to hair loss.My hair loss to hair growth journey has led me down a long path trying different protocols. Through my own experience and research, I've learned that there’s no one size fits all approach and that stacking multiple protocols is essential for healthy hair growth. I started a new, stacked protocol about 9 months ago and have completely reversed my hair loss and now have my lush curls back, with increased hair volume. Today, I have invited one of the country’s top hair restoration experts to share with us the current science around hair loss and hair growth. Dr. Alan Bauman is a full-time board-certified hair restoration physician. He has treated over 33,000 patients, and has performed over 10,000 hair transplant procedures and over 10,000 PRPs since starting his medical hair loss practice, Bauman Medical in 1997, a 12,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art “Hair Hospital” in downtown Boca Raton, FL.Dr. Bauman is one of approximately only 200 physicians worldwide to achieve certification from the esteemed American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS). He is known for pioneering numerous technologies in the field of hair restoration including minimally-invasive FUE Follicular Unit Extraction, VIP|FUE™ No-Shave Hair Transplant, Low-Level Laser Therapy, PRP Platelet Rich Plasma, PDOgro™, Eyelash Transplants, and others. He is a frequently invited faculty member and guest expert at numerous international scientific meetings and live surgery workshops and has been featured in hundreds of news stories in the media. You may have seen him on NBC Today, CBS Early Show, ABC Good Morning America, CNN, The Doctors, Spencer Kobren’s The Bald Truth, Bulletproof Radio with Dave Asprey, or featured in Men’s Health, GQ, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, The New York Times, Oprah Magazine and many more. Dr. Bauman was voted “#1 Top Hair Restoration Surgeon” in North America by Aesthetic Everything for the 6th consecutive year, “Top Hair Restoration Surgeon of the Decade”, and received the 2022 “Lifetime Achievement Award in Hair Restoration”. Forbes also recognized him as one of “10 CEOs Transforming Healthcare in America.”In this podcast, Dr. Bauman explains how the hair follicle functions, what triggers hair loss, the landscape of hair supplements and their efficacy, how nutrition plays a large role in hair growth, and the various hair growth modalities available to help reverse hair loss. We also talk about stacking a variety of protocols together for best results, red light therapy caps, and different tests available to personalize your hair growth journey. To contact Dr. Bauman, or Bauman Medical:website: https://www.baumanmedical.com/FB: https://www.facebook.com/baumanmedicalYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/baumanmedicalTo hear my personal hair loss journey from hair loss to hair growth, check out episode #29:https://www.jillfooswellness.com/podcast/my-personal-hair-loss-to-hair-regrowth-journeyBy listening to this podcast, you agree not to use this podcast as medical advice or for making any lifestyle changes to treat any medical condition in either yourself or others. Thyroid Disease 101 - #33
Conventional medicine and functional medicine approaches butt heads when it comes to optimizing the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland situated at the base of the front of your neck, just below your Adam's apple, and controls your metabolism, or how your body converts the food you eat into energy the body can use, such as regulating how fast your heart beats, how deep you breathe, and whether or not you lose or gain weight. The thyroid can also regulate body temperature, cholesterol levels, and women’s menstrual cycles. Twenty-three years ago I had a partial thyroidectomy, removing ½ of my thyroid, due to nodules and a cancer scare. Luckily, I did not have cancer. However, the removal of my thyroid has led me down a path of health-related issues for many years, including chronic hair shedding and thinning, depression, lack of motivation and focus, insomnia, and losing weight or gaining weight. I continue to struggle with mild insulin resistance. My libido was affected for years, and I experienced waves of chronic fatigue during the day. My story is not unique. There are many women, and men, suffering from thyroid disease, and getting the equation right is crucial to overall health and wellness. There’s hypothyroidism, which is what I have, hyperthyroidism, Grave’s disease, and Hashimoto’s, as well as goiter’s. Getting your thyroid tested in the conventional healthcare model is incomplete, often not receiving the proper tests to look at the full story of your thyroid health. The results are also skewed, using “normal” lab ranges versus the functional medicine approach, which includes a comprehensive thyroid lab panel, looking at “optimal” ranges. In the world of “normal” ranges, you are being compared to about 90% of the population, which these days, is pretty ill. Do you want to be compared to a 72-year-old, diabetic woman with heart disease? I do not.My guest today is going to share her expertise on all things thyroid related. She’s going to talk about what to do if you suspect your thyroid is not functioning properly, or what to do if you’ve been working with a doctor who may not be serving you and your thyroid any longer. Dr. Amie Hornaman, a.k.a The Thyroid-Fixer, is a woman on a mission to optimize thyroid patients around the world and give them their lives back using her proprietary transformational program: The FIX Method. She is also the founder of the Institute for Thyroid and Hormone Optimization. After her own experience of insufferable symptoms, misdiagnoses, and improper treatment, Dr. Amie set out to help others who she KNEW were going through the same set of frustrations and who were on the same medical roller coaster. She grabs your hand, gives you answers about your health that no one has told you, and gives you the actual tools and personalized treatment to fix you. What makes her program unique is the extra support and accessibility that you can’t find anywhere else. That’s the transformational journey. With a focus on optimizing thyroid and hormone function, and thus optimizing her patients, Dr. Amie looks at you as a unique individual and not JUST a lab value. She examines all factors that tie into thyroid dysfunction and thyroid symptoms and FIXES you to give you your life back. Red Light Therapy For Hair Loss - #32
Hair loss affects well over 100 million people. For men, it’s more socially acceptable to lose your hair, although I’m sure most men would like to have hair. For women, not so much. Women want a full head of hair. When we start seeing it shed, thin, and lose its volume, and see our hairline moving, it’s terrifying. And, not just because of how it looks and feels, but because we know that something deeper is causing it. And, that loss of control is heart-wrenching. We literally put the future of our hair in the hands of doctors, that may not have a clue as to how to reverse it.My own hair loss started after giving birth to my 5 kids over two decades ago. After having a partial thyroidectomy 23 years ago, I experienced even more hair loss. A stressful divorce and perimenopause 5 years ago only exacerbated it. My hair loss journey is not unique. There are so many women going through similar devastation watching their hair fall out.I started to research red light therapy devices for my own hair loss, knowing that time was of the essence. I was totally confused about what to look for and ended up watching a ton of videos, researching how red light therapy worked on hair follicles and looking at the devices the top hair growth doctors offered to their clients on their websites. My guest today is Dr. Michael Rabin, MD, MBA, an entrepreneur and innovator in the hair restoration industry. He is the founder of LaserCap Company and the inventor of the LaserCap, the original laser therapy cap, FDA cleared for hair regrowth in men and women. LaserCap uses a treatment known as low-level light therapy in which skin is exposed to low amounts of light that will penetrate through the scalp's surface and stimulate the hair follicle beneath.Dr. Rabin received both his MD and MBA from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.Dr. Rabin walks us through the many nuances of red light therapy and hair growth, including how it works, how often to use it, what’s important to look for when purchasing an at-home device and how red light therapy caps are best used as part of a stacked hair growth protocol, which may include topicals and supplementation. We talk about building a healthy lifestyle to support red light therapy use, including eating a nutrient-dense diet with optimal amounts of animal-based proteins, working on managing one’s stress, getting restorative sleep, and exercising.Medical Disclaimer:By listening to this podcast, you agree not to use this podcast as medical advice or for making any lifestyle changes to treat any medical condition in either yourself or others. Are you in the Red Zone of Stress? - #31
Emotional stress is a major contributing factor to the six leading causes of death in the United States: cancer, coronary heart disease, accidental injuries, respiratory disorders, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide. The top five most stressful life events include:Death of a loved oneDivorceMovingMajor illness or injuryJob lossStress affects the way in which our genes are expressed through epigenetics. Epigenetics is the study of what turns our genes on or off, like a light switch. When we are chronically stressed about a work deadline, a bad relationship, emotional eating, and so on, our genes will negatively change. Stress causes you to gain weight, lose hair, feel anxious/depressed, lower your cognitive functioning, affect your sleep, change the way you breathe, lowers your motivation to take care of yourself and much more. Women who are on birth control or who are transitioning through menopause experience stress. Certain medications can induce stress. Heart Disease Prevention - #30
Heart disease in the U.S. remains the #1 leading cause of death for men and women. According to the CDC, 1 person dies every 36 seconds for cardiovascular disease. 1 in every 4 deaths is caused by heart disease and costs the US over $350B every year. By the time someone sees a cardiologist, they’ve already had a cardiac related event. Risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, drinking too much alcohol, living a sedentary life, eating unhealthy foods and here’s a couple of risk factors that you may not be correlating to heart disease, poor sleep and menopause in women. Now that I’m in peri-menopause at 54, I think about the stats on women who are transitioning through their menopausal years and how the risk of heart disease increases as our bodies estrogen hormone levels dip to almost nothing. Even with having a mother who had breast cancer, and survived, I worry more about heart disease for myself than breast cancer. In 2013 the NIH published a study confirming that between 2002-2011, approx. 50,000 women died as a result of dropping their hormone replacement therapy due to misguided results from the Women’s Health Initiative study in the 1990’s. Still, to this day, many women fear taking estrogen because they are stuck in an old medical paradigm that they will induce breast cancer. But, those 50,000 deaths were caused by heart disease, not breast cancer. My guest today is a Dr. Michael Twyman MD, an integrative functional medicine cardiologist, and founder of Apollo Cardiology, who’s main focus is on the prevention and early detection of heart disease. It was during his years in medical school that he became passionate about how the heart functioned and what could be done to prevent heart attacks and strokes. Utilizing the best of conventional medicine, integrative/functional medicine, quantum medicine, and biohacking, Dr. Twyman works to get to the root cause of your cardiovascular issues and live your optimal life.Dr. Twyman and I are going to talk about all things heart disease and prevention, including medical myths around cholesterol, labs and tests that should be included in your doctor visits, the relationship between menopausal women, hormones and heart health, lifestyle, including diet and exercise and some very cool red light therapy hacks that he is known for. Women's Health, Bio-Identical Hormones & Menopause - #28
If you’re around the same age as me, mid-50’s, then you have/had a mom that hit menopause around 30-40 years ago during which time many women were put on HRT during post-menopause. HRT started in the 60’s, but became very popular in the 90’s, when the first clinical trials on HRT and post-menopausal women were started (1991), called the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), launched by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. In 2002, the first results were shared declaring that HRT had more negative than beneficial effects, thus HRT use dropped dramatically in the US (by 46%). Years later, the WHI trial was reanalyzed and showed that HRT use in younger women or started in the onset of post-menopausal women (within 10 years of their last cycle) had multiple beneficial effects including reduced cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality, meaning HRT protected against all ways of dying. Needless to say, women are still confused and worried about starting HRT, or BHRT, and are struggling through this phase in their lives with symptoms such as weight gain, cognitive decline/ Alzheimer’s disease, loss of lean muscle mass, night sweats, loss of sleep, loss of libido, vaginal dryness, osteoporosis, thinning hair and more. By the time a mid-life woman gets to me, she’s already tried out several diets, takes a cocktail of anti-depressants, anti-anxiety and sleep pharmaceuticals, has lost her sex drive, gained weight causing her waist circumference to be well over 30”, placing her in the obesity-category, lost her vitality and has low self-esteem. So, just as the kids are leaving the nest for college, mom feels like crap.On today’s episode, my guest and I deep dive into women’s health, the misconceptions of HRT and BHRT, and how to best prepare yourself with the correct medical data so that you can make an informed decision for yourself. Dr. Wendie Trubow, MD, is a functional medicine gynecologist. She received her M.D. from Tufts University in 2000 and has been practicing functional medicine since 2009. She is passionate about helping women optimize their health and their lives. There are many different challenges a woman faces in her life: work, home, relationships, spirituality, health, and they are all connected. While her credentials allow Dr. Trubow a solid medical foundation to help women achieve vitality, it was her own health journey that has inspired and supported her methods of care. Micronutrient Deficiencies and Personalized Supplementation - #25
Micronutrient deficiencies are a growing public health concern. In 2019, Cambridge University published a paper concerning micronutrient deficiencies. We’ve known for a long time that iron, iodine, and vitamin A deficiencies have been a long-term global concern, and now they are reporting that vitamin D, B12, and riboflavin (B2) are added to that list. Micronutrient deficiencies lead to poor health outcomes, and increased healthcare costs. Most people are taking supplements completely wrong. Taking too much, taking not enough, taking supplements that your body doesn't need and how they interact with pharmaceuticals and food is revealed in this episode.
