Episode 67: Black Lives Matter & Allyship

This past week, you may have noticed that we held back our regularly scheduled content to focus on the Black Lives Matter movement. To us, nothing is more important than life itself, and when our black and brown brothers and sisters have lost too many of their lives to the injustices built into America’s systems, we need to pause and reflect on how we, as Asian Americans, can do our part to help.We are outraged at the death of George Floyd, Breona Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many more unarmed black people whose names are not currently in the news. We are outraged at the persistence of police brutality, at the treatment of protestors, at white privilege, at systemic racism, and at our president. We are donating, e-mailing representatives, using our voice amongst our spheres of influence, and encouraging the people we know to do the same. So we hope that with this episode, we can continue to discuss, listen and learn from one another.Comment below with stories of the conversations that you're having with your loved ones. What was the most difficult part of the conversation? What would be helpful to hear from another ABG in the community? Share with us also any resources that you've found helpful to you.*We will be donating a portion of the ad revenue generated from this episode to various organizations supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. This episode was edited by Michelle Hsieh.---P A R T N E R S mentioned in this episode:- Skillshare: 2 free months of premium membership with code: ABG www.skillshare.com/ABG- Function of Beauty: 20% off your first box with code: ABG at www.functionofbeauty.com- Shipstation: 60-day free trial with code: ABG at shipstation.com- BetterHelp: 10% off first month at BetterHelp.com/ABGS U B S C R I B E T O U S !- youtube: bit.ly/3ep2Dqp- instagram: instagram.com/asianbossgirl- website: asianbossgirl.comE – M A I L U S !- asianbossgirl@gmail.comS U P P O R T U S !- merch: asianbossgirl.com/shop- donation: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/message Learn more about your ad choices. [BONUS]: From the Covid Frontlines with Nurse Michelle Acob

This Hero Story is brought to you by McDonald's. With all that is happening with the pandemic, McDonald's is putting forward the effort to showcase the many kinds of heroes in the Asian Pacific American community. McDonald's desire to uplift and highlight community heroes is guided by the belief that we are all in this together, and they are committed to caring for local heroes who are caring for our country. COVID19 has profoundly impacted the world. We’ve all had to adjust to a new normal, and that new normal has looked different for everyone. In recent episodes, we shared how COVID19 has impacted our personal lives, and our experiences have reflected that of many individuals who are adjusting to the stay-at-home order. In this bonus episode, we want to recognize and honor a local community hero who is working directly on the frontlines. Today, we have Michelle Acob, a bedside and charge nurse at the Regional Medical Center of San Jose - a trauma hospital. Michelle works in one of Santa Clara County’s first Covid-19 units starting in March 2020. As a charge and infection prevention nurse, she oversees the entire Covid-19 unit and is in control of bedding patients and guiding 10-12 nurses with their assigned patient loads. We are so honored to have Michelle here to share her story and experiences during this unprecedented period of our lives. This episode edited by Michelle Hsieh. Episode 63: APAHM - Growing Up In An Asian Household

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, APAHM for short! During this month, we celebrate the cultures, traditions, and history of AAPI’s in the United States. This country is very much shaped by the stories of immigrants from Asia and the Pacific and the native people of the Pacific Islands. Today, we will be sharing with you our personal stories as Asian American women -- the traditions and foods we remember from our childhood, where we grew up, what it was like to visit "the motherland", and how these experiences have impacted our journey with shaping our own cultural identity. Happy APAHM everyone! Episode 62: Loneliness, Connection, and Online Dating

ABG is officially in season 6! With the stay-at-home order still in place, we continue to record from each of our own homes. By now, we are a little more settled into this new, temporary normal of social distancing, but it can be challenging to cope with the inevitable loneliness. In collaboration with Bumble, this episode is dedicated to ways we are dealing with loneliness and how we are connecting with others through online apps. We discuss profile creation and evaluation tactics (we talk about wanting a horoscope filter, which you can actually find in the settings on your Bumble app!); how to start a conversation; and for those listeners like Helen who aren't on the search for a Boo anymore, our experiences with Bumble BFF (there's an option to hide date mode for users who are looking to make friends/network). We also appreciate that Bumble's priority is safety, and creating an inclusive/safe environment for it's users to make connections. Listen in as we discuss our personal experiences, and share your own tips and/or experiences in the comments below! Episode 61: Therapy and Mental Health with Haesue Jo (MA, LMFT)

Mental health is a topic that we get many messages about from our listeners. It’s a sensitive and complicated topic, and especially with all the recent world events that have occurred, we thought now is the right time to take a deeper dive into this topic. Back in July 2019, we released Episode 44: Mental Health with Christine Chen wherein our good friend shared her personal experience with clinical depression. Today, we wanted to offer a different perspective on the topic by bringing in Haesue Jo, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in the Bay Area, California. Haesue has 7 years of experience as a mental health professional, including working with Asian-American youth, families, and adults, given her firsthand experience dealing with generational and cultural differences in her own family. Haesue is also the Clinical Support Lead at BetterHelp, the largest online counseling platform worldwide. You can learn more about Haesue at betterhelp.com/haesue-jo. Episode 60: We Left Our Jobs!

We are back with season 6! We've kicked off many seasons before, but this is a significant one for us. This is the first time that the 3 of us no longer hold full-time positions at a company other than AsianBossGirl. Yes, we are ALL recently fun-employed, no longer tied to an employer other than ourselves. In this episode, we share how this came to be, including all the nuanced thoughts, feelings, and external events that lead us to this place. Listen to hear a little more about what is next for Mel, Helen, Janet, and ABG as a whole. Episode 59: COVID-19 - On Lockdown and Managing in Times of Crisis

It has been an incredibly dynamic last couple of weeks for us personally at ABG, and for the world at large. So, even though we are off season, we wanted to check in with you all and share a special episode to talk about how we are personally experiencing the world-wide COVID-19 incident, in hopes that it might help some of you out there feel more connected, prompt conversations with your personal circles, or even just offer a brief moment of reprieve from your new daily routine. We hope you are all keeping safe, informed, and taking care of yourselves mentally, physically, and emotionally. Thank you to those who are battling this pandemic on the frontlines and allowing most of us to remain safely at home. This episode was recorded on March 20, 2020 - the state of events may have changed drastically by the time you listen to this episode, so we ask for your understanding toward the opinions of the issues discussed.
