163: A Feminist Approach to Public Speaking with Carol Cox

As I’ve worked with nearly 200 women over the past few years, I’ve seen how the same things trip us up, as well as what liberates us as women - our voices and our stories.  Have you ever attended an event, heard a speaker, and thought, “I could give just as good as, if not a better, presentation. Why am I not up there?” Have you ever shied away from submitting to speak at a conference or pitching yourself for a paid workshop because you don’t feel like you’re expert enough? Lack of confidence, imposter syndrome, self-doubt, the critical inner voice can all prevent us from putting ourselves out there or from talking about what we really want to talk about. I’ve been a self-proclaimed feminist since high school and have Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in women’s history and gender studies. Yet, until recently, I haven’t seen how feminism applies to how we show up as speakers. In this episode, I’m sharing the beginnings of a feminist framework I’m developing around public speaking. Being a feminist speaker has nothing to do with your content - you don’t have to be talking about feminist theory or only to women. It’s about truly finding our voices as women that have been buried under the scripts we think we’re supposed to act from - and making room for the voices that haven’t had opportunities to be heard. It’s about relationship and connection, equality and liberation. Listen in to hear 3 ways you can start adopting a feminist approach to your speaking now. I’ll do a future episode where I dig more into the feminist framework I’m developing, so be sure to subscribe to the podcast.   About Us: The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox. 162: Why We're #ChoosingWomensVoices - and You Should Too with Carol Cox and Diane Diaz

I was listening to a well-known, very popular male podcaster a few months ago and he put me over the edge when he said something like this (I'm paraphrasing): "Some people tell me I should have more diverse guests - women and people of color - but I don't think that should be a criteria for who I invite. I want the best person on a given topic no matter their gender or race." And at that moment, I hit stop, unsubscribed, and deleted his show from my podcast app. 🤯  (You'll hear who it was and more in this episode.) I do have to thank him for partly inspiring the #ChoosingWomensVoices challenge we're running this month to raise our awareness of the voices we listen to (and read), from podcasts and books to movies, tv, and news to our specific industry. How many are women? Is there diversity within those women's voices? Are there women podcasters/authors/experts you can find to augment (or replace) the male voices? You may be wondering: why does it matter if the content I listen to or read is from a woman or a man? That’s what we’re talking about on the podcast as well as during the challenge. In this episode, Diane Diaz and I talk about: What’s just as important as visibility is our actual voices as women and what we’re saying: “If you can see it *and* hear it, you can be it.” Although there are more women in higher-profile positions than ever, we're still hitting that glass ceiling. Why is that? There are many factors, but one is literally the voices we hear. The history of women being shamed, ridiculed, threatened, even harmed and killed for speaking up. This continues even today: GamerGate, harassment on social media, women in politics. Women’s actual voices are criticized as being shrill, nagging, whining, too angry, too emotional or not emotional enough. The positive impact that collective women’s voices can have, as we've seen in movements like Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, and #TimesUp.  What we can do about it by being more intentional with the voices we choose. Unsilencing ourselves and developing the confidence to do so. Join the Challenge! To sign up for our #ChoosingWomensVoices challenge, go to https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/challenge or text the word SPEAKING to 33-777. During the challenge, you'll receive an email prompt each day for 7 days with a short activity, along with recommendations. We'll also be asking you to share the women's voices you've found during the challenge. You can start the challenge any time - we’ll be repeating the 7 days each week in March. 158: Dealing with Uncertainty and Fear When Public Speaking [Mindset Series]

Public speaking can certainly bring about nerves and uncertainty, whether you’re a new speaker or you’ve been speaking a while and want to try something new on stage or with a larger audience. In this episode, Diane Diaz and I talk about: The improv class we’re taking and what we’ve learned so far that can help you Our own personal experiences of feeling uncertain about new experiences How Diane is approaching hiking part of the Appalachian Trail next year (bears, oh my!) How I’m approaching writing my book proposal and book this year (self-doubt, for sure!) How some of our clients have approached dealing with uncertainty and fear The benefits of uncertainty - that’s where growth comes from   Interestingly, the week we recorded this episode, I had received an email newsletter from Leo Babauta of Zen Habits about uncertainty.  Here’s what he wrote: “The first mindset shift to consider is that uncertainty is not bad, or something to be avoided. It’s a natural part of doing anything meaningful. In fact, feeling uncertainty is a great sign that you’re doing something challenging and meaningful. “The second mindset shift is to see an uncertain path as a practice opportunity. It’s not something to run from, but a place to stay, so that we can grow, learn, and create.” Embrace trying new things and having new experiences, both on stage and off.   What’s something new you want to do this year? Let me know on LinkedIn!   Speaking of LinkedIn, have you purchased our LinkedIn for Speakers masterclass yet? Users are loving it! Here’s a recent review: “For months, I have moved the ‘learn to leverage LinkedIn’ task from one month to the next. Finding a class with the content, expertise and price point to fit my needs was a challenge. Finally success - I found Diane! She did a wonderful job focusing on the how's and why's of each topic. Her modules were well-organized to build upon one another and just the right length to absorb and apply the material. Because of the LinkedIn Masterclass, I am ready to leverage the platform to build my brand and grow my business. 156: Visibility Strategies That Get You Noticed with Janice Gassam, Ph.D.

What does “being visible” mean? It means being seen and being in public view.  As entrepreneurs, we want to be seen, so people know what we do and how we can help them. Visibility strategies, including being a panelist and speaker, posting on LinkedIn, and writing for publications, is what my guest Janice Gassam has successfully done over the past few years (even as an introvert - and we talk about this). From graduating with her Ph.D. in Applied Organizational Psychology to becoming a sought-after speaker and a Senior Contributing Writer to Forbes, Janice has quickly elevated her visibility. But, “visible” also means something that’s apparent or obvious (from dictionary.com). It seems obvious that companies should improve diversity among their employees - and many are working towards this. But, they have blindspots and tend to be reactive rather than proactive, particularly when it comes to inclusion, leadership, and retention. Janice works with companies on diversity, inclusion, and equity, so we talk about this important topic too.  About My Guest: Janice Gassam, Ph.D. is a consultant, who created BWG Business Solutions, LLC, to help organizations create environments that are equitable for all employees. Janice facilitates workshops, delivers keynote speeches and “Awareness Talks” to spark important dialogue and develop strategies for more workplace inclusion. She is the host of the Diversity Dinner Dialogue in New York City, which is a free workshop on diversity, equity, and inclusion-related issues that companies and individuals are facing. She is a senior contributing writer for Forbes and a contributing writer for Fast Company. Janice is a TEDx speaker, having delivered a talk on emotional intelligence. Janice has a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology and she is a professor of Business Management.   About Us: The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox.
