Ep. 140: Whole School Mindfulness with Ben Painter

Happy Day, Friend! On this week’s podcast episode, I’m talking about integrating mindfulness into schools. My special guest today is Ben Painter.  Ben Painter is a Partner and Co-Founder at WholeSchool Mindfulness, focusing on strategic growth. Ben works with WholeSchools’s supporters, Mindfulness Directors, staff, and Board to support the movement to integrate mindfulness into our education system. In high school, Ben had the opportunity to take mindfulness classes with Mindfulness Director Doug Worthen. Since then, Ben has used his meditation practice to become a healthier, happier person and a more compassionate community member. Prior to serving in his current position at WholeSchool, Ben worked at New Profit, a venture philanthropy organization that partners with social entrepreneurs to break down barriers to opportunity in America. Ben studied at Bowdoin College, where he served as the Vice President of the Student Body and co-founder of the Mindfulness Club. Ben has attended numerous meditation retreats, including two retreats at the Drupa Drong monastery in Northern Nepal. WholeSchool’s mission is to co-create an education system that advances well-being, community, and justice through the transformative power of mindfulness. We are working to establish and support the position of “Mindfulness Director” in schools. A Mindfulness Director is a school or district staff member whose role is to integrate mindfulness practices within their community. Lisa Baylis has been sharing well-being strategies for the last 20 years. A natural born connector with an innate ability to make people feel valued and heard, she is a teacher, a counselor, a speaker, and a mother. Lisa is a published author of Self-Compassion for Educators as well as the creator of the AWE Method - Awakening the Wellbeing of Educators - which merges self-care, mindfulness, and self-compassion.Lisa has a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She has taught internationally and locally. Much of her vast teaching experience was gained in the classrooms across British Columbia, Canada. Currently, she is spreading her work to all communities that will welcome her. When she can she works as a high school counselor in the Greater Victoria School District and drives her children to their many music and sports lessons. Camelia (aka Mimi) is a Black Yoga Teacher Alliance  + a Yoga Alliance 200RYT Yoga Teacher, a KAY (Kidding Around Yoga) Certified Kids Yoga Teacher, a Certified Meditation Instructor, a YBB (Yoga Behind Bars) certified Trauma-Informed Yoga Instructor & a Reiki II Practitioner. Mimi started Mimi’s Yoga Kids in 2018 after realizing the many benefits of doing yoga with her young grandson. She knew that this was something that kids and families needed. She couldn’t find what she wanted so she decided to create it!Camelia is very excited to share all these wonderful practices with children and their families. She wants to share her knowledge with the world to cultivate  awareness that these wonderful practices can teach all of us, especially our children - mindfulness, inner peace, meditation, and imagination. Ep. 133: Education, Policy, and Purpose with Dee Dubose

Happy Day, Friend! On this week’s podcast episode I’m talking about education, policy, and purpose. My special guest today is Dee Dubose. Dee is an educator, organizer, and advocate for effective K-12 schools. Born in rural Alabama, Dee’s educational journey was impacted by both federal, state, and local policies that limited his overall school experience. With that at the center of his work, he has spent the last five years gaining insight as a classroom teacher at KIPP Texas and speaking out as an organizer with One Houston in Houston, Texas. In this way, he hopes to use these stories and experiences in his work as he is starting his dual Ph.D in Education Policy + K-12 Administration at Michigan State University.
