253. The power of the urban farm with Greg Peterson
When we think of farming we think of the country, the bush, grass plains, endless acres… unless you're an urban farmer who sees possibility on any patch of land the eye can see - enter Greg Peterson, founder and director of the Urban Farm in Phoenix Arizona who heard his teacher say “Food used to be free” at a workshop as a pre-teen and the rest was history. Greg inspires us to do what we can with what we have. 252. Grass roots Sustainability with Eilish Maloney
Continuing on our food-source series, this week I interview community champion and chef, Eilish Maloney and I hope in hearing her story it helps more people realise that it can start with us, and if it doesn't start with us, swe join others who've started good things and support their work to collectively create a bigger impact. The Southern Highlands, NSW is a beautiful part of the world, and even though Eilish left her home town to work in some of the best kitchens in the world, she felt called to come home and start something to connect people to food source more meaningfully. The What If Society was born, helping to inspire locals and hospitality businesses to waste less, through creative products like condensed milk from cafe milks that don't all get finished at the end of the day, to pickles from surplus produce, to restaurants in the region composting all scraps as a collective. It's inspiring to hear these stories and hopefully inspires you to connect to your local food champions and support their work - or just maybe, start something yourself! 251. Biodynamics and dairy with farmer Rob Watson
Continuing our “connecting to source” series interviewing regenerative farmers, futuresteaders, urban farmers and researchers, this week I interviewed Biodynamic Dairy farmer, Rob Watson, of Mungalli Creek in QLD. On Rob's farm you find rainforest, kangaroos and cassowaries all around and if one of the cow's is feeling a little unwell, you'll commonly find them being treated with homeopathics or special essential oil blends - what a life! If you want to look at how Biodynamic dairy farming works, I ask for a lot of technical detail, including details about what makes biodynamic farming and soil special, medical care of the animals, calves, life and death and production of the products. I hope you enjoy the show and it inspires you to support your farmer. Find the show notes over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Hosted on Acast. 250. Futuresteading: A return to a simpler life with Jade Miles
What does living in awe and connection to the now while living for the future look like? It looks like Futuresteading, as described by author and farmer Jade Miles on today's show and in her beautiful new book, Futuresteading. Jade Miles and husband Charlie Showers run Black Barn Farm, a biodiverse orchard, nursery and workshop space in north east Victoria which is a magnet for visitors to learn about permaculture, homesteading, as well as to pick-their-own from some of the 98 varieties of heritage fruit and berries.Whether you live in a city apartment, in the suburbs or on twenty acres, the principles of futuresteading offer easy-to-understand information and hands-on ideas. Learn to grow delicious food and medicinal plants; share rituals with loved ones through the seasons; feast on healthy home-cooked food for the family; nourish body and soul with outdoor expeditions and moments of rest; and create wonders with your hands. Now doesn't that sound lovely? 248. Fasting ins and outs for all with Dr Mindy Pelz
This week to round out our brain series, I interview Dr Mindy Pelz, a passionate evidence-based proponent for fasting and what it can do for the human body - while the benefits to the brain are something we discuss towards the end of the interview, the interview is packed with everything you might have ever had a question about when it came to fasting - why should we care? How does it work? How do different time periods work in different ways? How are men and women different when it comes to fasting and considering women, how are pre and post menopausal women different? What if it's not ‘working'? What if I'm hungry? What if it makes me feel worse? But what about breakfast - isn't it important? I can honestly say, this is one of the most efficient, chock full interviews on a subject I've done and I challenge anyone to not at least be curious about fasting by the end of this 75 min conversation. 247. Dr Jill Bolte Taylor on her stroke of insight and whole brain living.
This week continuing our brain series, I interview the legendary Dr Jill Bolte Taylor. You may have seen her Ted talk… or that time she was interviewed by Oprah - well, now, she's finally made it to the true big time: The Low Tox Life podcast! Jokes aside, you simply must be bathed in Jill's excitement for the human brain. Beyond her experience of a severe stroke and the 8 years till full recovery, Jill is passionate about helping us harness our brains to their full potential which includes learning the 4 characters that live inside our brains, and what it means to get to know them and what each of them needs, as well as helping us more effectively connect and communicate with those around us. So, thanks to a brain scientist losing the function of half of her brain, and having to rebuild it again, we are now able to gain more clarity about our brains than ever before. Come on this journey to learn about the left and right brains, our 4 characters of the brain and start whole-brain living - it was such an uplifting and clarifying interview and I know you'll love it. 246. Dr Maya Shetreat on plant medicine and teacher plants
This week continuing our brain health series, I interview Dr Maya Shetreat - neurologist, herbalist, urban farmer and author of the best selling book The Dirt Cure. This time back on the show, Maya is talking about plants of all kinds for treatments of all kinds - from medicinal plants for every day healing, to plants containing psychedelics and the power of healing treatment-resistant mental health conditions such as depression and PTSD. She even teaches people online how to safely interact with psychedelics (I am not making a recommendation to start treating yourself, simply sharing what we are starting to learn about the power of these interventions, as started on the show last year with psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr Dave Rabin and his work. It's exciting times when we can start to see ways to support people in an area where up to 90% of patients are unsatisfied with how their treatment is progressing.
