1 Samuel | CBR Bible Introduction Project
For more details on reading 1 Samuel in light of Genesis, Peter Leithart’s A Son to Me: An Exposition of 1-2 Samuel is the place to start. Dale Ralph Davis’ 1 Samuel: Looking on The Heart is an excellent resource as well (as is his book on 2 Samuel). For big picture overview and some helpful background information, we would recommend the chapter on 1-2 Samuel in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the Old Testament: The Gospel Promised. And for a helpful visual overview, check out the Bible Project video: https://youtu.be/QJOju5Dw0V0

Ruth | CBR Bible Introduction Project
A short, accessible resource with excellent cultural background information is Finding God in the Margins by Carolyn Custis James. Listeners should also check out the chapter on Ruth in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the Old Testament: The Gospel Promised. Commentaries on Ruth are often combined with commentaries on Judges, as is the case in the Tyndale Old Testament, New American, and NIV Application commentary series. Listeners wanting to go deeper into the theological, literary, and historical aspects of the book should check those volumes out, as well as the commentary by Robert L. Hubbard Jr. in the New International Commentary series. As always, the Bible Project video on Ruth is helpful: https://youtu.be/0h1eoBeR4Jk

Matthew | CBR Bible Introduction Project
The book mentioned during the episode is Matthew, Disciple and Scribe by Patrick Schreiner. We would also recommend The Sermon on The Mount by Jonathan Pennington for an in-depth look at the wisdom in that part of Matthew. We would also recommend the Lexham Geographic Commentary on the Gospels for insight into many of Jesus’ teachings and miracles in Matthew, as well as the other Gospels. You can also check out the two part Bible Project videos on Matthew: https://youtu.be/3Dv4-n6OYGI and https://youtu.be/GGCF3OPWN14

James | CBR Bible Introduction Project
For a helpful introductory commentary on James, the volume by Douglas Moo in the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series is helpful. A more advanced commentary by the same author can be found in the Pillar New Testament Commentary series. We would also recommend The Bible Project video on James: https://youtu.be/qn-hLHWwRYY

Hebrews | CBR Bible Introduction Project
On Hebrews, Mike recommends the commentaries by John Calvin and Luke Timothy Johnson. He would also recommend Ernst Kasemann’s Wandering People of God and a collection of essays titled Epistle to the Hebrews and Christian Theology.Nate recommends the volume on Hebrews in the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series, as well as the volume by F. F. Bruce in the New International Commentary series. The volume in the NIV Application Commentary series by George Guthrie is helpful for thinking about contemporary relevance. It also worth reading the entry on Hebrews in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament: The Gospel Realized.

Judges | CBR Bible Introduction Project
For more background details on the book of Judges, listeners should check out the chapter on Judges in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the Old Testament: The Gospel Promised. The best single volume commentary that is detailed and accessible is probably Barry Webb’s volume in The New International Commentary on the Old Testament series. For a more pastoral, application oriented commentary, listeners should get a copy of Judges: Such a Great Salvation by Dale Ralph Davis (and any other commentary he has written).

Listeners will also find the chapters in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament: The Gospel Realized helpful.Ben recommends Everyday Church by Tim Chester as a practical look at 1 Peter specifically. Genesis | CBR Bible Introduction Project
For Genesis, we would recommend both Reading Genesis Well and Genesis 1-4: A Linguistic, Literary, and Theological Commentary both by C. John Collins. Likewise, Redeeming Science and Interpreting Eden both by Vern Poythress are useful for wrestling with issues related to the early chapters of Genesis. For reading the book of Genesis as a whole well, we would recommend the commentaries by Derek Kidner and Bruce Waltke. Also helpful are the commentaries by Tremper Longman and John Walton. However, readers may find some of their views on the early chapters at odds with traditional interpretations.

The Gospel of Mark | CBR Bible Introduction Project
Damein recommend A Theology of Mark by Hans Bayer and Jesus the King by Tim Keller as resources for further study in Mark. Josh recommends the larger volume Four Portraits, One Jesus by Mark Strauss for further study in Mark in relation to the other gospels. Nate would recommend A Concise Guide to Reading the New Testament by David Nienhuis as a helpful resource on not just Mark, but the rest of the New Testament. Likewise, the single volume commentary by Eckhard Schnabel in the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series is a good first purchase for interested readers. More advanced readers will benefit from The Cross from a Distance: Atonement in Mark’s Gospel by Peter Bolt. It is part of the New Studies in Biblical Theology series that we would all recommend.
