An Encyclopedia of Knowledge: Dr. Jim Stoppani discusses training methods for hypertrophy, strength, and fat loss

Dr. Jim Stoppani is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the science of training. He has written thousands of articles on exercise, nutrition, and health, was a co-author for the New York Times best seller, LL Cool J's Platinum 360 Diet and Lifestyle, as well as author of Stronger Arms & Upper Body, PrayFit, and Essentials of Sports Nutrition and Supplements. This was all after earning degrees  and from University of Connecticut doing postdoctoral work at Yale University School of Medicine. In this episode, Dr. Stoppani discussed his extensive background from his first experiences training to learning from some of the best in the industry, and eventually writing his latest book, Jim Stoppani's Encyclopedia of Muscle and Strength. He breaks down the differences in training for hypertrophy, strength, and fat loss.   Disclaimer: There was a slight delay in recording that occasionally sounds like Jim and Aaron are talking over each other. This was an audio issue that was unable to be corrected after the recording.   Jim Stoppani, PhD Jim Stoppani is a leading authority on exercise science, sport nutrition, and supplementation. He received his doctorate in exercise physiology with a minor in biochemistry from the University of Connecticut. After graduation, he served as a postdoctoral research fellow at Yale University School of Medicine, where he investigated the effects of exercise and diet on gene regulation in muscle tissue. For his research he was awarded the 2002 Gatorade Beginning Investigator in Exercise Science Award by the American Physiological Society. From 2002 to 2013, Stoppani was the senior science editor for Muscle and Fitness, Muscle and Fitness Hers, and Flex magazines. Developing the Core with Dr. Jeff Willardson

A strong core is vital and a necessity for elite-level athletes. Research has established a direct correlation between core strength, performance, and injury risk reduction. Dr. Jeff Willardson began focusing on various areas of strength and conditioning while a professor at Eastern Illinois University but became particularly interested in the benefits of training the core. In this interview, Dr. Willardson details some of those benefits and talks about the recently released NSCA Developing the Core, Second Edition. Importance of Core Training with Leslee Bender

Leslee Bender is a 40-year veteran in the fitness industry, and the 2020 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year, and author of Vital Core Training. She is also the creator of the Bender Ball which she created after realizing the importance of core training. Yogo Through the Lens of Menopause with Niamh Daly

The Importance of Soft Skills in Training and Coaching with Lee Boyce

The science behind training will always play a large role in the success of both the athlete and coach, but soft skills are a big factor that aren't always given the attention they deserve. Dr. Emmi Aguillard and Coach Jonathan Cane joined this episode to discuss their book, Run Healthy: The Runner's Guide to Injury Prevention and Treatment. They detail tips and strategies to get healthy and stay healthy in order to get the most out of your running and race journey.    Emmi Aguillard, PT, DPT, FAFS is a fulltime physical therapist managing her own private practice that specializes in treating and training runners. She also has advanced training in pelvic health and works with women to maintain their optimal fitness during pregnancy and safely return to running after giving birth. Prior to that, she worked at Finish Line Physical Therapy in New York City. Dr. Aguillard earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Columbia University after graduating from Tulane University, where she competed for the women's NCAA Division I track and field and cross country programs. She completed her fellowship in applied functional science through the Gray Institute and has taken numerous courses through the Postural Restoration Institute.   Jonathan Cane, better known as Coach Cane, has been coaching endurance athletes for over 30 years. He holds a master's degree in exercise physiology from Adelphi University and has coached for Nike, JackRabbit, and Under Armour. Cane is the coauthor of Triathlon Anatomy as well as The Complete Idiot's Guide to Weight Training, and he has written for Triathlete magazine, MetroSports Magazine, New York Runner, and more.
