The Sanderlanche Podcast

This week Sazed is back, and trouble is following right on his heels, but the crew takes it better than any of us expected. We also get to meet Allrianne Cett, daughter of Ashweather Cett, one of the men currently besieging Luthadel. We don't trust her. Jaymee thinks she might even be a Kandra. Then again, we think that about nearly everyone at this point. Most of all, we're all delighted by Vin and OreSeur's heart to heart. These two crazy kids (well, one crazy kid and one crazy bone-eating monster blob dog, but that's a mouthful) might just make this thing work after all. The big question everyone is asking, though, is, this book is called The Well of Ascension; when is this going to turn into a buddy road trip movie where Vin and Sazed go find the well? When indeed. In this week's episode, there's a lot of bad going down. Straff Venture is ... well, horrible. I mean, there's not much more to say, but we do say a lot about how horrible he is. Then there's the Koloss who are ... also horrible but in other ways. We spend a pretty good amount of time being creeped out about them. And then Joe has a rant about Spook. In these chapters, Elend gets put down, which everyone loved, Sazed meets a crazy guy, which everyone is disturbed by, and Elend gets a makeover, which, oddly, is starting to bring Joe over into Camp Elend. Who woulda thunkit? The same old mysteries are still haunting us. For example, what is the Deepness? We've gotten through a book and a quarter now, and the question has chosen, very inconsiderately, to not answer itself, much to everyone's frustration (but particularly Dac; Jaymee almost seems happy just imagining a tentacle monster and calling it a day). This week our heroes explore the spooky Conventical of Seran, wary of danger at every turn, and then we have a friendly chat with a mist puppy and a strategy session with the crew. Wait, I say "our heroes," but are the heroes of this podcast really the heroes of the book, or are the heroes of the podcast Jaymee, Dac, and Joe? Deep questions. Deep, completely irrelevant to anything questions. Really makes you think. Or maybe it doesn't. Whatever. The episode has all your favorites, discussion, theorizing, hating on Spook. In these chapters we get some political machinations, a new army, and a shocking number of skeletons in closets. Not the metaphorical kind. The kind that are made of bones and hanging out in closets for some reason. It seems like there's a new kandra in town, and Jaymee, Joe and Dac all have theories on who it might be. Dac, Joe and Jaymee continue to be bombarded by the new mysteries that this second book is unveiling during its opening chapters. One thing, at least, that puts them on more familiar ground is the opportunity to hate on Spook some more. So that's got to be comforting. But the deeper questions remain. What is the mist thingy? Who is the Watcher? What's up with Marsh? And did Sanderson really have Vin give the kandra a dog's body so that he could make a joke about the guy with the dog's body being her new dogsbody? Who knows. We certainly don't on this newest episode of The Sanderlanche!

We start in on the second book of our Sanderson journey this week with The Well of Ascension. Seemed like a good idea after finishing The Final Empire. It would have been an odd choice to jump to Warbreaker or something at this point, I think. Will our hosts be happy that Elend hasn't been deposed in the time between books? What will they make of The Watcher and the mysterious thing in the mists? Do they expect that Straff Venture will be getting his long-awaited Father of the Year trophy this book? In this episode we look back over some of the most accurate predictions from our read-through of The Final Empire. Some of them aren't so out there as to be mind-blowing, but some were eerily correct. After that, we discuss our first Cosmere short, The 11th Metal. Kelsier fights his first mistborn, and Gemmel gets a sweet fork. Everybody wins, except for that guy who died I guess, but he was a jerk anyway.
