Designing the Revolution
Roger Hallam
It's official we are heading into the biggest shit-show in human history. The U.N says there is no ‘credible pathway’ to staying under 1.5C (October 2022). Revolution is now inevitable, a great danger and a great opportunity to create a new revitalised democracy, or allow fascism to drag us all into hell.
Far from it being the end it's just the beginning, there's everything to play for but only if we organise and resist as if our lives depend upon it, because they do.
Roger Hallam has studied and designed social change for 35 years, he has initiated and helped run the biggest climate campaigns of the last decade he knows his stuff. This series details the theory and practice of a completely new way of reimagining and renewing society.
At this moment in time this is the most important podcast series in the world, even if few people get it; that it's now or never for humanity. Roger walks his talk. The first 13 podcasts episodes are recorded from prison.
We're talking about real change here, no more blah blah blah.

Designing the Revolution | Chapter 12 | Action Design
How do you design social confrontation - focusing and fusing disruption with an openness to dialogue? This is critical to the whole project.
Based upon the theoretical principles outlined in the previous two chapters I lay out the details of several designs, drawing upon historical examples. Experience in action laid the foundations of how to effective organise large scale civil resistance.

Designing the Revolution | Chapter 11 (Part 2 of 2) | Action Theory
Socialiability is nothing without confrontational action. People will not keep coming to meetings if there is nothing to do. Mobilisation and action then are two sides of the same coin - part of the same system. Action theory is the principles of design we need to use to bring sociability into what is called “civil disobedience” - the nonviolent confrontation with injustice - the social spaces where you are disrupting the opponent. And getting attacked for it. How do you create polarisation to paradoxically reduce polarisation - increase social connection and thus social transformation?.

Designing the Revolution | Chapter 10 (Part 2 of 2) | Sociability Practice
Introducing the theories of proximity and sociability into mobilisation designs has a massive impact on increasing the numbers of people coming into a civil resistance community and thus building the skills and knowledge, ready for the coming social disruptions. The focus has to be on the details of social interactions in small group settings.

Designing the Revolution | Chapter 9 | Sociability Theory
The key concept for the C21st century progressive revolution. Forget all the last century’s ism. We are looking at reclaiming the lifeworld of personal interaction and how we can operationise processes to take over the spaces of inhumanity politics. The revolution has to be about enhancing the human connectivity or it is no revolution at all.

Okay so much for some theory, let’s look at doing stuff. Our first meeting design. The key site of causality is the group – not the individual nor society. This is why we start here. Get the social space design right and the revolution follows.

More fundamentals. Nothing changes will first getting the attention of people. And that requires disruption and emotion. Forget “information” and “being nice”. Only then are you in the ballpark of getting somewhere – of things going made, - that is non linear. That’s the plan.

Designing the Revolution | Chapter 6 | Complexity
It is foundational. To act effective you have to understand how society works. It is not an engine it’s natural system. Its not mechanical. Lots of things influence each other at the same time. You therefore probe it to get a sense of what works and then iterate till you get somewhere. And then keep going.

No time to misery and self pity. The next thousand generation will not forgive for moping around. A revolutionary period in about to explode in Western democracies and potentially globally. We need prepare now by building civil resistance projects that can ride the wave when it comes. That’s what this series is all about.
