Designing the Revolution
Roger Hallam
It's official we are heading into the biggest shit-show in human history. The U.N says there is no ‘credible pathway’ to staying under 1.5C (October 2022). Revolution is now inevitable, a great danger and a great opportunity to create a new revitalised democracy, or allow fascism to drag us all into hell.
Far from it being the end it's just the beginning, there's everything to play for but only if we organise and resist as if our lives depend upon it, because they do.
Roger Hallam has studied and designed social change for 35 years, he has initiated and helped run the biggest climate campaigns of the last decade he knows his stuff. This series details the theory and practice of a completely new way of reimagining and renewing society.
At this moment in time this is the most important podcast series in the world, even if few people get it; that it's now or never for humanity. Roger walks his talk. The first 13 podcasts episodes are recorded from prison.
We're talking about real change here, no more blah blah blah.

Reformers and the Most Important Graph in the World
Reformists, like Justin Rowlatt, trying harder, just makes the situation worse. In the second of three consecutive podcasts on the why gradualism and staying in the rules will destroy liberal civilisation, Roger turns his attention to the media. He provides overwhelming evidence, summarised in the most important graph in the world, that staying in the mindset of mainstream achieves nothing at best, and at worst creates an even greater rupture when it comes. Effectiveness in 2023 means confronting the system, risking losing one's 'career' and arrest/prison. Gary Lineker's refusal to submit to the BBC, is yet another classic case study on what needs to happen.

Hobbit Lawyers Facing Mordor
In Roger Hallam's recent trial for conspiracy to cause criminal damage, in which he was again found not guilty, the judge summarised the evidence for the jury but omitted mentioning Roger's key defence - that the prospect of human extinction due to carbon emissions, constitutes an infinite crime and therefore must justify any finite harm intending to stop this obscenity. Did he forget to put it in - or could he not hear it?
In this podcast Roger shows how "doing good" in the system in the present context of total emergency results in even greater suffering and injustice. Only when we exit the system and engage in a revolutionary confrontation with it, can we save our civilisation and also the rule of law itself. The present situation is "the exception". We face Mordor.

International Coordination - The A22 Network
This podcast is not all dreamed up and theoretical - the organisational model it lays out has produced the most powerful campaigns on climate civil resistance in the western world at the present time - the A22 network projects (A22 stands for April 2022 when the network was formed).
These two chapters shows how these campaigns are systematically created and then combined to produce a high level of international cooperation and coordination. A22 is the stepping stone to the revolutionary formations of the coming years.

The Whirlwind
We take an overview of our organisational model in relation to the wider project of the upcoming revolutionary period and why whatever happens being organised gives the best chances of progressive outcomes.

The Dynamo
The essence of any viable pro social revolutionary strategy is the creation of positive feedback loops over the course of iterations of struggle. In other words you do stuff and design it in such a way to maximise the chances that this "doing" leads to people doing more stuff in the next round of activities. It's about lighting the fire - but doing it in a organised and controlled way.
This chapter gives you some of the most important micro elements in such designs. You wont read about this in the media but believe me this is the most important knowledge you have to learn to focus on.

Leadership
Anyone can come up with a cool plan but the real question is who is going to organise it - how are the decisions made - how do such people remain in service. These are the key questions of revolutionary transformation.
The good news is that praxis based organising is moving beyond the sterile debate between "hierarchy" and "horizontalism". Without a firm centre there can be no sustainable healthy decentralisation. The two go together as this chapter explains.

Framing Communication and Media Part 2
The media is not what it seems. The short form mainstream media interview is not a place to deliberate but a battle of wits. You don't answer questions because they are designed to humiliate you and/or trap you into reformist logics. The media is a site of action - disruption: verbal and physical. Long form interviews provide more opportunities to calmly take the criticism and yourself to be human in the face of dogmatic attack. Either way the name of the game is not to play the game.

Sociability In Action
Socialiability is nothing without confrontational action. People will not keep coming to meetings if there is nothing to do. Mobilisation and action then are two sides of the same coin - part of the same system. Action theory is the principles of design we need to use to bring sociability into what is called “civil disobedience” - the nonviolent confrontation with injustice - the social spaces where you are disrupting the opponent. And getting attacked for it. How do you create polarisation to paradoxically reduce polarisation - increase social connection and thus social transformation?
