Dr. Tung Nguyen is Chair of AAPI Victory Alliance and President of PIVOT-The Progressive Vietnamese American Organization, both 501c4 organizations dedicated to the AAPI progressive movement. He is also a pioneer in Asian American health research, a practicing primary care physician, and a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).Dr. Nguyen served as a Commissioner on President Obama’s Advisory Commission on AAPIs from 2011 to 2014, and as the Chair of the Commission from 2014- 2017. He led the Commission in the first massive resignation from the Trump Administration after it implemented the Muslim ban in 2017.He is also a co-founder and serves on the board of AAPI Victory Fund. 125 - Derek Nguyen - Film Director/Producer - Housemaid and Burning Bayou
A refugee of the Vietnam war, Derek Nguyen is a screenwriter, director, and producer. His directorial feature debut The Housemaid was released by IFC Films in 2018 and sold to 22 different territories around the world.
An American adaption called Grave Hill is heading to production in 2022, written by Oscar-winner Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious), directed by Deon Taylor (Black & Blue) and produced by CJ Entertainment (Parasite). He was a 2004 fellow at the Sundance Screenwriters Lab for his screenplay, Monster based on his award-winning play.
He is the cofounder of The Population, which has produced Carlo Mirabella-Davis’ Swallow (IFC Films), Heidi Ewing’s I Carry You With Me (Sony Pictures Classics), and upcoming Josef Kubota Wladyka’s Catch The Fair One. Derek was also on the producing team for Jennifer Fox's The Tale, So Yong Kim's Lovesong, Sarah Adina Smith's Buster’s Mal Heart, and Hannah Fidell's Long Dumb Road, among others.
He recently won the inaugural Future Gold Film Fellowship presented by Tribeca Studios, Netflix, and GoldHouse.

122 - Viet Nguyen - How to Do Without Doing and Leave Nothing Undone - Film/TV Director
Viet Nguyen, an Austin native, graduated from film school at the University of Texas and now resides in Los Angeles.
He directed and co-wrote the horror-comedy feature, Crush the Skull, which played at over a dozen film festivals, and picked up the Nightfall Award at the Los Angeles Film Festival, as well as Best Feature at the San Diego Asian American Film Festival. Viet has also directed a bunch of stuff on tv including: Lucifer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Kung Fu, The Flash, and iZombie. Viet's upcoming projects are Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Club for Netflix, Party Down for Starz, and Let the Right One In for Showtime.
And no, he did NOT win a Pulitzer but he'll share stories of being
confused with the other famous Viet Nguyen. And... he'll autograph his
book anyway!

121- Cuong Do - Why Liberal Arts Studies Can Transform Vietnam - Former Samsung Chief Strategy Officer
Cuong Do recently retired as President of the Samsung Global Strategy Group, where he helps set the strategic direction of Samsung Group’s diverse business portfolio. He continues to serve as a Senior Advisor to Samsung’s senior leadership lead the group’s strategy and growth efforts.
Prior to Samsung, Cuong served as the Chief Strategy Officer for Merck, Tyco Electronics, and Lenovo. He was also a former senior partner at McKinsey & Company, where he spent 17 years and helped build the Firm’s healthcare, high tech, and corporate finance practices. Cuong often straddles the worlds of health care and high tech and has helped companies grow by pursuing new opportunities through internal development, acquisitions, corporate venturing, and partnership.
Cuong is an active entrepreneur – starting companies himself, coaching startup CEOs, and serving on startup boards.
He is active with many philanthropic activities, particularly in autism and education. He founded Identifor, Inc., and Identifor Foundation to help autistic teenagers identify abilities and strengths to make the transition to adulthood.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, U.S., and a Master of Business Administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, New Hampshire, U.S.

Ocean Vuong is the author of The New York Times bestselling novel, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, out from Penguin Press (2019) and forthcoming in 30 languages. A recipient of a 2019 MacArthur "Genius" Grant, he is also the author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection, Night Sky with Exit Wounds, a New York Times Top 10 Book of 2016, winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize, the Whiting Award, the Thom Gunn Award, and the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. A Ruth Lilly fellow from the Poetry Foundation, his honors include fellowships from the Lannan Foundation, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, The Elizabeth George Foundation, The Academy of American Poets, and the Pushcart Prize.
Vuong's writings have been featured in The Atlantic, Granta, Harpers, The Nation, New Republic, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Paris Review, The Village Voice, and American Poetry Review, which awarded him the Stanley Kunitz Prize for Younger Poets. Selected by Foreign Policy magazine as a 2016 100 Leading Global Thinker, Ocean was also named by BuzzFeed Books as one of “32 Essential Asian American Writers” and has been profiled on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” PBS NewsHour, Teen Vogue, Interview, Poets & Writers, and The New Yorker.
Born in Saigon, Vietnam and raised in Hartford, Connecticut in a working class family of nail salon and factory laborers, he was educated at nearby Manchester Community College before transferring to Pace University to study International Marketing. Without completing his first term, he dropped out of Business school and enrolled at Brooklyn College, where he graduated with a BA in Nineteenth Century American Literature. He subsequently received his MFA in Poetry from NYU.
He currently lives in Northampton, Massachusetts where he serves as an Associate Professor in the MFA Program for Poets and Writers at UMass-Amherst.

Philip Nguyễn is the Executive Director of the Vietnamese American Roundtable (VAR). After graduating from UC Berkeley with B.A. degrees in Ethnic Studies and Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies, he earned his M.A. degree in Asian American Studies from the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University, where he teaches courses on Vietnamese American Literature and the History of the Vietnamese in the US.
He has been involved with community-based organizations dedicated to amplifying and advocating for Asian American, Southeast Asian American, and Vietnamese American voices to the forefront through his involvement with the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network, the Progressive Vietnamese American Organization, and the Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations.
