The Real Cost of New Zealand's Dramatic Covid-19 Response
New Zealand is consistently ranked in the Heritage Index of Economic Freedom as one of the freest economies in the world, due to robust trade, light regulation, strong fiscal health, and a tourist magnet for the entire world. But since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, they have had dramatic lockdowns and their borders have largely been closed. In addition, their relationship with China continues to expand, while they build out a "security" presence throughout the Southern Pacific. On this episode, we talk with Jordan Williams of the New Zealand Taxpayers Union, and examine differences between the US and New Zealand covid-19 response, and what a relationship with China should look like.Show NotesPrevious episode on New Zealand: https://shows.acast.com/heritageexplains/episodes/tim-does-the-haka-in-new-zealand Hosted on Acast. Why the U.S. Should Recognize Somaliland (Feat. His Excellency Muse Bihi Abdi)
Have you heard of Somaliland? It has been de facto independent for 30 years, and they have taken great strides to pursue democracy, free speech, and free market ideas. Because of this, the U.S. should recognize Somaliland as an independent country. In practice, the territory is not now, nor is likely to be, a part of Somalia. Acknowledging that reality would allow Washington to create more effective policy in an important and contested region. In addition, a strong relationship with an independent Somaliland could potentially benefit the US, as we try to hedge against Chinese influence in the region. On this episode, Heritage Foundation expert, Josh Meservey, joins us to explain. China's Allegiance In Russia's War on Ukraine
It was recently released that the Biden administration essentially begged China to try and sway Putin to not invade Ukraine. But this posture ignores the growing array of ties between Beijing and Moscow. To imagine that China would wish to support the U.S. against Russia is to imagine a shared set of interests between the U.S. and Beijing that does not exist. On this episode, Heritage expert Dean Cheng explains the details of this complicated maneuver, and why given the even greater economic and military ties that now link Moscow and Beijing, Washington needs to reprioritize strengthening the United States itself.Show Notes:China, Russia, and Ukraine: It’s Folly to Think Beijing Will Work With West Hosted on Acast. BLM Is in Trouble, but Still Making Our Lives Worse
We all remember the summer of 2020 when Black Lives Matter launched into the mainstream of cultural discourse. It was a rally cry at protests and demonstrations around the world, and posted all over sporting events. But we also remember the riots resulting in property destruction, injury, and an attack on police. So the movement started, but what have they been up to since? Recently, there have been many questions about their leadership, tax-exempt status, and donations. What have they been doing with all of the money raised? On this episode, Mike Gonzalez joins us to discuss what we know and most importantly what we don’t know about the Black Lives Matter organization.
