On today’s podcast episode, I’m talking about preparing for embryo transfer. I find that it’s helpful to think about embryo transfer the same way you might think about having a very special guest over for dinner. What are you going to do if you have a very special person over? You’re going to make sure everything is absolutely perfect. When it comes to preparing for an embryo transfer, you want to take the same approach. Your metaphorical home in the house analogy is your uterus. The devastation of doing more tests and finding out that something might be wrong that you have to fix is kind of a pain, but the devastation of going through a transfer that doesn’t work is also pretty darn awful. Because I work so hard to help families, if I can do anything to prevent someone from not experiencing the devastation of a negative embryo transfer, I’m going to do everything possible to clean up that house and make sure it’s perfect. What I recommend is that people do 3 tests before embryo transfer to make sure your uterus is absolutely perfect prior to your embryo transfer.They are: Hysteroscopy Saline Infusion, Sonogram, and Hysterosalpingogram. Last year in the United States a baby was born every 8 seconds. That‘s roughly 3.8 Million babies born last year alone! You don’t have to be a fertility doctor to know what that means. Millions of people just like you were trying to conceive. Research tells us that most couples conceive within six cycles of timed intercourse, but many others (roughly 10% of couples) are struggling with fertility. Here’s the funny thing about what I do. I want to teach you how NOT to be my patient. Of course, there are exceptions to that statement. But in general, I’d much prefer to share with you what I’ve learned about preparing for pregnancy in hopes that it makes your journey to parenthood easier. On a recent episode of Ask The Egg Whisperer, Muna wrote in with a question. sent in a question. She's 41 and has done four rounds of IVF. She would like advice on what she can do for success in her next round of IVF. Here’s what she wrote, “I'm 41 years old. I did four rounds of IVF. The first cycle was when I was 40. I've gotten a total of 17 embryos, one normal 16 abnormal. Should I continue or give up? I've always wanted to be a mom since I was a kid. Did you know that fertility rates have dropped 50% in the last 5 decades, and more and more people are requiring help to grow their family? Some are calling it "Spermageddon." I'm not one to run with fantastical headlines, but the truth is that we are facing an infertility epidemic. And, this is all heartbreaking for the people dealing with infertility, and for us as a society. Today, I'm honored to be joined by Dr. Shanna Swan on The Egg Whisperer Show to talk about this upsetting truth. Dr. Swan is one of the world’s leading environmental and reproductive epidemiologists and a Professor of environmental medicine and public health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. On a recent episode of Ask The Egg Whisperer, Mary sent in a question. She's 33 and has been trying to conceive for two years. Here’s what she wrote, “I've been trying for our first baby for the past two years. I had a miscarriage this past summer, and I'm now seeing a fertility doc to see if IVF is the right choice for me. The blood work came out pretty much fine. Tubes are open, and my uterus looks good. So I'm not sure why we're not able to conceive naturally. My husband and I have also gone through genetic testing. I carry a gene for thalassemia. Do you suggest I go for IVF or try other methods first? And what all questions should I be asking my REI before deciding on IVF?"
