Informatics, documentation, and innovation go hand in hand.
In this episode of the Future of Global Informatics, TJ Southern talks with Hiyam Nadel, director of the Center of Innovations in Care Delivery at Mass General Hospital, about innovation and how nurses should think of themselves as innovators who can identify the pain points they're experiencing and coming up with their solutions. Hiyam explains nurse informaticists' role as the bridge between technology and innovation and the many opportunities that informatics brings in innovation. She talks about the importance of team collaboration to innovate, as opposed to working in silos, a common healthcare practice. At the Center of Innovation, Hiyam and the team mentor innovators and guide them through their process without placing any parameters, giving creative freedom to flow. She encourages nurses to start somewhere by solving problems and building credibility for themselves. Likewise, she urges employers to pay attention to possible innovative solutions their employees might come up with.

Being a bedside nurse is not your only option available; this episode features two professionals with many parallels in their non-traditional nursing careers.
This week’s guests on the SONSIEL Podcast are Joshua Littlejohn, Product Manager of Nurse Experience at IntelyCare, and Danika Meyer, nursing professional and Product Owner at Cook Children’s Health Care System. They share their journeys transitioning towards non-traditional, non-beside, but equally impactful roles in nursing when delivering patient care and what their current roles consist of. After having just transitioned into an application analyst role, Danika reached out to Joshua on LinkedIn due to his jump into a product management role. Since that initial message, they developed a mentorship relationship. They explain the difference between an application analyst and a product role, the former being more focused on the technical work and information services and the latter being more strategy-focused and business oriented. They talk about how nursing should be thought of in an expansive way as there are plenty of roles that can bring value to the table with different types of knowledge that still support patient care. Danika and Joshua speak about how SONSIEL has created a sense of community around bringing innovation to nursing.

In this episode of the Future of Global Informatics, TJ Southern talks with Sheena Rogers, Health Informatics and Business Integrations director at Creative Information Technology. Sheena talks about how informatics has collected massive amounts of healthcare data but must now figure out how to use it meaningfully. She explains Creative Information Technology's work by extracting data from electronic health records to create interoperability across different systems beyond just one organization and between health and human services. She speaks of moving data from legacy systems to new ones and having a multifaceted team helming said transition, especially using informaticists to traffic the information. She then touches on mentoring, supporting, and highlighting informaticists.
