You Are Not Broken
Kelly Casperson, MD
Empowering women (and the partners who love them) to live their best mid lives. Combining the power of mind-work, body-science and relationships, I joyously smash the societal barriers that are keeping us from living our best intimate lives. Whether you are young or past menopause, single or in a long-term relationship, it is never too late or too early to realize YOU ARE NOT BROKEN. With humor, candor and ease, I break down the stories that we have been told about being sexual beings, to help us play, and normalize our intimacy and health. Nothing in this podcast is personal medical advice, of course.

#60 - Post-partum Challenges with Dr. Charles
Featured in this week’s episode of You Are Not Broken host Kelly Casperson, MD interviews OBGYN Dr. Meedlen Charles. Dr. Charles will discuss the effects of Postpartum Depression and how women can be embarrassed talking about the issues they have after giving birth.
Dr. Meedlen talks about the importance knowing that women with previous conditions of anxiety and depression are more likely to be affected by Postpartum. However, most women will have effects after birth, and this is a normal part of giving birth that many do not want to discuss. In some cultures, it is frowned upon to talk about what women experience after pregnancy and birth.
Most women will experience many difficult side effects after birth including lack of desire, body issues, anxiety, depression, vaginal dryness, and more. Some women may feel as if these effects are uncommon, but the reality is that many women experience side effects after giving birth. Women may have a difficult time having sex with their partner or breast feeding for a long period of time. When returning to the work force, women might endure a hard time “wearing multiple hats” and managing their role as a new mother. These feelings are normal and common in most cases.
We talk about pain and dryness with sex. Hormones can be a reason for this, so can birth trauma. Tips and tricks and our favorites!
Typically, there are appointments a few short weeks after giving birth to observe if a woman is experiencing postpartum. Unfortunately, many believe that postpartum will stop after 30 days or 3 months, but the reality is that it can last up to a year after giving birth. The highest risk for perinatal suicide occurs between nine months to a year after giving birth.
Learn when Dr. Charles brings in physical therapy to a woman’s healing plan post-partum.
We talk about low libido post-partum. So common and there are so many reasons why.
The best cause of action is to talk honestly to your doctor because while it may feel embarrassing, they are there to help you. They can recommend lotions or oils to make your body feel more comfortable during sex, therapists to help you deal with your anxiety or depression, and more.
Join these physicians as they talk about women and their mental/physical state after having a child. And then be sure to subscribe to the podcast on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

A sex therapist, relationship therapist, and sexual medicine specialist — Dr. Snyder has dedicated his entire career to helping individuals and couples with sex and relationship concerns. Over 30+ years, he’s helped over 1,500 individuals and couples regain closeness and satisfaction in their relationships.
I heard him on a podcast “sexology” and needed to read his book and get him on my podcast. I loved the male perspective, and he offered ways for women to understand the male model of sex in a long-term relationship.

- Women are the “chief sexual officer” in the relationship
- How women and men are different
- The “two step” plan for good sex
- In his book, he writes, “your wife is not a lawn mower” – we discuss
- He writes – "Good sex definitely make you dumber. And great sex can make you downright stupid."
- Sex knots and how to untie them
- Why men “go missing” in bed
- Tips for talking to your male partner about better sex
- Talk about shame and sex!
- FIOS – for it’s own sake – enjoy arousal for it’s own sake. He discusses what “simmering” is and why we should enjoy it more.
- Why humans are not steam engines
- “Everyone over 35 should have a dimmer switch in the bedroom”
- ANTs – automatic negative thoughts – so many women have these and body image issues – help please!
- Desire – it is becoming an object of FDA approved medications – yet you talk so differently about it, such that it is not needed at all. Please educate us!

Happy New Year 2021! Tips for impossible goals!
Happy New year! I reflect on the past year. How I got started by listening to the voice in my head. Yeah, kinda like Frozen 2 (which my kids are currently watching).
- You have to deal with your limiting beliefs that aren’t moving you forward
Impossible goal for 2021 – how about intimacy? It is the journey, not the destination – a journey of 1,000 miles starts with a single step.
It is not the YOU when you get there – but the journey
What is your reason for your goal? If it is so you feel better about yourself, ask yourself why you can’t feel good about yourself now. You are worthy now, just as you are. Nothing you can get/obtain will CREATE the worthiness. Feeling of worthiness comes from thoughts, not circumstances.
So, if you want to have a better sex life to feel worthy as a spouse etc etc….what is preventing you from feeling worthy as a spouse now?
Watch out for the SHOULDS!
I also share the top four rules by Dr. Rachel Carlton Abrams in “the Multi-Orgasmic Woman".
Self-cultivation – best renaming EVER!
And in the meantime, remember, you are not broken.
