80. Breathing for Women, Menopause, Sleep Apnea & Insomnia - Patrick McKeown
Today you may learn something that just may change your life. You may already be familiar with Patrick McKeown, or at least, with his work. But many of you also may have never heard of what Patrick has really helped bring to the forefront of what is starting to go mainstream. Breathing technique or breathwork. Patrick McKeown is an international breathing expert and author based in Galway, Ireland. But he really is so much more than this. He should really be given an honorary doctorate, because he has researched breathing so intensely and has even published a study in the Journal of Clinical Medicine. He really sounds like a Phd and he clearly knows much more about the breath and breathing mechanisms than most doctors. Patrick has been studying the respiratory system and breathing for the last 20 years and he's not only experienced in training the elite special forces, Olympic coaches, athletes, thousands of clients and now breathing practitioners, he is also a best selling author having 9 books under his belt now. In 2015 he wrote the Oxygen Advantage where he focused on addressing dysfunctional breathing patterns to revolutionize how we train. But just last year he released two new books - The Breathing Cure and Atomic Focus. We talk about these books, but in the context of the older woman. My guest today will not only inspire you herself, but she has a whole tribe behind her of inspirational older women who are smashing it through menopause and beyond. I am talking about Selene Yeager. She is leading the way for so many of us women who are older and active. Many of her followers are over 50 and 60 and are still professional athletes hitting records, climbing mountains and winning races, outright, over the guys. I first found Selene through the Feisty Menopause Summit through Dr. Stacy Sims. This summit which gathered incredible speakers on all the topics women going through menopause want to hear sent me one clear message. Menopause is a time to speed up, not slow down. It showed me an army of women who won't sit on the sidelines just because society has told them "game over". They want to keep in ring smashing their goals and making even bigger dreams after 50. Because, frankly speaking, there are plenty of women who are bypassing this completely too. This podcast is super practical and fun where you get real life tips on how to take control of your food and exercise during the menopausal transition. So get your pen and paper out and start taking notes. Today we are talking with a sports and performance dietitian. Dina Griffin, also known as The Nutrition Mechanic. She's got a really cool nutrition coaching company based out of Boulder, Colorado in the US. And, she's super qualified. She's got a whole team working with all levels of adult endurance athletes to optimize their health, vitality and performance. She likes to blend in both the science and the evidence based strategies with real life considerations. It's really tough, because we may read a great study on how to optimize our health, but have no idea how to implement it…or even if it applies to us. And that's what Dina is really great at so she can make not only a personalized nutrition plan, but how to make it sustainable. Dina is passionate about working with women, particularly those of us in peri and post menopause. She can deal with those of us who just hit the gym a few times a week all the way to the ultra athletes who need a different approach. Her training in nutrition actually started out in the clinical setting, so she is very aware and qualified to help those who are dealing with certain diseases and metabolic conditions. Dina herself is also an endurance athlete. She's into triathlons, marathons, and ultra marathons, so she actually practices what she preaches and sees the impact of her approaches on herself as well as on all kinds of women. 76. Fasting, Sleep & Diabetes in Older Women - Dr. Satchin Panda
It is a true pleasure and honor to host Dr. Satchidananda Panda aka "Satchin Panda" today to talk about circadian rhythms and fasting and how this affects women living with diabetes. But what we discuss is relevant for just about anyone, whether or not you have diabetes. We discuss the topics in his new book The Circadian Diabetes Code. Dr. Panda is a professor at The Salk Institute in California, where his lab researches circadian rhythms. His is at the forefront of research in four major areas that are relevant to healthy aging. And these can be summarized as "nurturing the circadian clock, clocking the drugs and drugging the clock". And this offers a new and really unique approach to preventing, managing and even reversing chronic diseases. Dr. Panda's groundbeaking discoveries which has made him most famous are: 1. His discovery of a blue light sensor in the retina of the eye which has led to human-centric lighting to optimize our sleep, our mood, and even our brain function. 2. He discovered that eating within an 8-12 hour window, called Time-restricted eating or intermittent fasting, can prevent or reverse chronic diseases and increase healthy lifespan. 3. He is also known for circadian genomics studies in primates, which have identified the dosing of the majority of FDA-approved drugs that can be optimized to the right time of the day to reduce the negative effects of the drugs and improve their efficacy. 4. His lab, along with several others, has demonstrated that drugs targeting circadian clock components are a multi-solving approach to treat chronic diseases, including liver disease, cancer, and the dreaded Alzheimer's disease. 74. Hack The Midlife Body Fat Switch, Uric Acid & The Truth On Fructose - Dr. Richard Johnson
This guest teaches us how to turn off our fat switch. Some of you have already read his first book, "The Fat Switch", which he published in 2012 and now our honored guest Dr. Richard Johnson has another book out called "Nature Wants Us to Be Fat: The Surprising Science Behind Why We Gain Weight and How We Can Prevent--and Reverse--It" which releases February 8th, 2022. I was blown away with his first book and am really excited to talk with him about his new book, because he has some exciting new information from his research to share with us. Dr. Richard Johnson works at the University of Colorado in Denver as a Professor of Medicine. He's been keeping super busy these last 25 years not only as a professor, but also both a practicing physician AND clinical scientist. He studies…nothing else, but our favorite drug…sugar. He is super well known in the medical circles for his research into obesity and diabetes. He found out exactly HOW sugar causes obesity and how our bodies can actually make fructose from other foods. He also found out that a by-product of fructose metabolism called uric acid plays a huge role in metabolic syndrome. The National Institute of Health has been funding his research since the 80s, so he's been doing this for…quite.. a while. He's a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and has published over, get this, 700 papers, lectured in over 45 countries, and is a highly cited scientist. Just Pubmed him. You'll be blown away. So I think we are speaking with someone who is highly highly qualified to talk about this topic. 73. Low Energy - Do You Sleep or Exercise? - Dr. Amy Bender

Dr. Bender will show us how to hack our energy stores to help us fight fatigue and when to choose sleep over exercise or exercise over sleep. Dr. Amy Bender, holds a masters of science and PhD on Experimental Psychology and works with athletes. She's also an athlete herself. After her Ph.D., she did a Mitacs post-doctoral fellowship with the University of Calgary and Centre for Sleep and Human Performance, which is one of only a handful of places specializing in sleep with athletes. She's now the senior research scientist at Calgary Counseling Centre studying the impacts of sleep interventions and mental health.
