Episode #281: Life Lessons from the Cockpit of QF32 with Richard De Crespigny

Melbourne born and educated, Richard Champion de Crespigny got his first taste of a future flying career as a 14-year-old when his father took him on a tour of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Academy at Point Cook in Victoria. In 1975, aed 17, he joined the RAAF: One year later, he started flying. During his 11 years flying transport, jet and helicopter aircraft with the RAAF, he was seconded as AIde-de-Camp to two Australian Governors-General, Richard remained with the RAAF until 1986 when he joined Qantas, flying Boeing 747, Airbus A330 and A380 jet aircrafts. In 2010 he was the Captain on board Qantas Flight QF32 when it suffered a catastrophic explosion. His multi-award winning and bestselling book QF32 is a blow-by-blow story of what went right when things went wrong in the air. Richard still flies the AIrbus A380, delivers presentations on the elements of resilience to governments, agencies and fortune 500 companies. IN 2016, Richard was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to the aviation industry, both nationally and internationally, particularly to flight safety and to the community. This was a deeply insightful two hour long deep dive conversation with Richard on a number of topics that pertain to not only surviving a crisis situation in the air, which - fortunately - few of us will have to do, but how to apply the elements of resilience to better navigate crisis in our own lives, embrace adversity and thrive, whether in a business setting or even when it comes to our own interpersonal relationships. As you’ll discover, Richard thinks critically about a wide range of disciplines that each serve to aid his understanding of the world and his decision making, characteristics that were key to the safe landing of the aircraft. Amongst the plethora of topics we discussed, expect to learn: Why you need to first understand your mind if you want to master it What the eight elements of resilience are and how to use them to your advantage How to understand risk and make better decisions, particularly in crisis situations when our threat-detecting amygdala is often prone to hijacking the more rational part of our brain and wire us to react instead of respond Expect to learn this and a whole bunch more in my far reaching conversation with the one and only Richard De Crespigny. --- Topics Discussed: De Crespigny’s early inspirations How our brains work Understand your mind to understand yourself Negativity bias and mainstream media The eight elements of resilience Why we’re living in the best times ever Leaning into adversity and being prepared for anything Risk management Decision making Crisis management Making sense of the wealth of knowledge at our disposal Responding with intelligence instead of reacting with impulse Leadership, empowering your people and radical transparency Systems 1 and 2 thinking Effective teamwork Learning how to learn Balancing short-term and long-term incentives Brand management, transparency and personal guarantees What happened aboard QF32 Air France flight 447 Turning brand defectors into brand advocates NASA, SpaceX, Hyperloop and Autonomous Vehicles Robotics and emerging technologies Embracing ambiguity and thriving in uncertain conditions Show Notes: Fly the Book: https://flythebookcom.wordpress.com/ Richard’s blog: http://qf32.aero    Twitter: @RichardDeCrep Get Fly! the book On Amazon: https://amzn.to/2p9Xavz Get QF32 the book on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2Oarcdg --- Listen on Apple Podcasts @ goo.gl/sMnEa0 Also available on: Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher and Soundcloud Twitter: www.twitter.com/steveglaveski  Instagram: www.instagram.com/@thesteveglaveski  Future Squared: www.futuresquared.xyz  Steve Glaveski: www.steveglaveski.com  Medium: www.medium.com/@steveglaveski  Terminator clips sourced from www.terminatorfiles.com and remain the intellectual property of Tristar Pictures. Episode #279: Steve Hughes on Comedy, Depression and the Downside of Political Correctness

Steve Hughes is an internationally renowned stand up comedian who tells it like it is, refusing to shy away from the confonting and what is often interpreted as controversial. Steve is incredibly observant, bringing with him worldly insights into the bleeding obvious and comes armed with what he says is more issues than an Occupy movement. Steve spent the first half of his career as a heavy metal drummer for bands such as Mortal Sin before burning up the international comedy circuit, which he has been doing for more than 12 years now, having toured throughout Europe, Australia, USA, Canada & New Zealand to rave reviews and mutinous laughter. However, don’t be fooled, this conversation goes way beyond the realm of just comedy and heavy metal and we spend the majority of the two hours exploring topics such as political correctness and identity politics, Steve’s battle with depression, free will, the suppression of freedom of speech, preference falsification, feminism, disidentification with ego, leaning into adversity and bombing onstage, the state of the music industry, drugs, technology addiction, participation trophies and much much more. A word of warning, this podcast is not safe for work, and is not for the faint at heart. With that, let’s kick off my two hour deep dive with the inimitable Steve Hughes. Episode #278: Stop Drinking Somebody Else's Kool-Aid and Be Kinder to Yourself

#Hustle #BeastMode #GetAfterIt These are all hashtags that I have been guilty of using from time to time. However, as I am now in the seventh year of my own entrepreneurial journey, I’ve come to realise that it is easy for ambitious types tuned in to the online ecosystem of entrepreneurs, life coaches, hustlers and the like to aspire to be ‘great’, and that in order to be ‘great’, think that they need to embody idols who preach 16 hour work days, doing away with friends who don’t ‘serve you’ and the relentless pursuit of what are often one-dimensional goals. I hope you enjoyed this episode. Episode #277: Book Summary - 21 Lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Noah Harari

Fresh off the back of the success of Sapiens and Homo Deus, Professor Yuval Noah Harari has returned with another book, not quite for the ages, but for the 21st Century. 21 Lessons for the 21st Century cuts through the information overwhelm and muddy waters of the online world and confronts the most urgent questions on today’s global agenda. I was excited when I received my copy of the book in the mail, courtesy of Penguin Books, and couldn’t wait to get my head buried in it. And by all accounts, i.e. mine, it didn’t fail to disappoint. Harari confronts today’s 21 big questions throughout its 21 chapters and after having read and highlighted the book, distilled its 300 pages down to 16,000 words of notes, and then further distilled those notes down to 5,000 words of key lessons and take-aways, I decided to bring you my third book summary. This was one of my more enjoyable reads this year, and while many for the concepts introduced here weren’t overly new to me, given my voracious appetite for multi-disciplinary learning, which will come as no surprise to listeners of this show, Harari has a way of packaging key concepts up in a way that not only makes for entertaining reading, but also makes you better appreciate what you already knew. If I had to give this book a score, I’d give it a 9/10, and I would recommend it to every listener as an accomplice to take with you into your 21st Century journey. Episode #276: The Corporate Startup with Dan Toma

Dan Toma is the co-author The Corporate Startup: How Established Companies Can Develop Successful Innovation Ecosystems. Puzzled by the questions ‘why are innovative products mainly launched by startups?’, Toma focuses on enterprise innovation strategy - specifically on the changes blue-chip organizations need to make to allow for new ventures to be built in a corporate setting, and has worked with the likes of Deutsche Telekom, Bosch, Jaguar Land Rover, Bayer, John Deere or Allianz. Dan holds a dual degree MBA from Bradford University and TiasNimbas Business School while being certified lean startup acceleration specialist by Columbia University through the Lean Launchpad program. We riffed on all things corporate innovation, viable alternatives to common pitfalls and given Dan’s Romanian heritage, the 94 Romanian World Cup team. On corporate innovation, expect to learn about: An innovation thesis and why your company needs one Why it’s imperative to get the plumbing right by building an innovation ecosystem The importance of getting the metrics right and going beyond mere activity metrics to what Dan calls impact metrics We covered a lot more ground in this conversation that will be of serious interest to intrapreneurs so sit back, relax or enjoy your walk, workout or wherever you happen to be listening to this, for my conversation with yet another critical thinker on the topic of corporate innovation and on thriving under conditions of uncertainty,  Dan Toma. Topics Discussed: Dan’s background Why companies need an innovation thesis The paradox of innovation within a large company What is an innovation thesis and why do companies need one? Why startups aren’t a smaller version of a large company and vice versa Lessons from venture capital How to build an innovation ecosystem Why metrics for sustaining innovation don’t support adjacent or disruptive innovation Diversity not just of what you can see, but what you can’t see - in particular, how people think Budgeting for corporate innovation Lean leadership Success stories and case studies The value of premortems and retrospectives to get buy-in for ‘iterative’ ways of doing things How to support the taking of lots of small bets instead of few large ones Show Notes: Linkedin: www.linkedin.com/in/dantoma/ Get Dan’s book, The Corporate Startup: https://amzn.to/2Nx63tC Twitter: @Danto_ma Dan’s site and consulting: danto.ma Innov8rs Sydney conference: innov8rs.co/sydney Get the book, Clarity First: https://amzn.to/2NyNJjP Coupon code: 8-steve I hope you enjoyed this episode. Episode #275: Elon Musk on JRE

As a huge fan of both the Joe Rogan Experience podcast and Elon Musk, I (and millions of other people across the globe) could barely contain my excitement once I heard that Musk would be appearing on the show last week, and it didn’t fail to live up to expectations with more than 10 YouTube views within 4 days of release, not accounting for the millions of podcast listens. In this episode of Fast Fix Friday, I express some frustration at how the mainstream have responded to the interview and leave you with some words of wisdom from Musk himself. --- I hope you enjoyed this episode. Episode #274.5: Announcing Future Squared version T200

Welcome back to Future Squared for episode #274... and a half. The purpose of this episode is to announce what you might have noticed already, and that is the brand and direction refresh for the show. When I started the show almost 3 years and 274 episodes ago,  it was all about entrepreneurship and corporate innovation. In the time since, the show has evolved quite a bit to explore myriad disciplines including technology, psychology, philosophy, economics, sociology, politics, biology, motivation, management, leadership, health, fitness and productivity. As the new intro track says, the show is about more than just helping you innovate, it’s about helping you to think in a multi-disciplinary way so that you can make better decisions, kick  goals in your professional and personal life and better navigate what is fast becoming a Huxleyian Brave New World. As such, the new brand was inspired by the Terminator movies and those eight simple words that Arnold Schwarzenegger utters as the T-800 cybernetic organism... "come with me if you want to live", a reflection of this show’s underlying purpose. This change gives me the freedom to explore said topics without feeling like I'm alienating corporate innovation or entrepreneurship listeners and also opens the show up to a much larger audience, many of whom mistakenly think that Future Squared is just for the latter, when for a long time, it has been about so much more than that. If you’ve been a long time listener, you shouldn’t expect any major changes to the content. I’ll continue to bring you a wide range of guests, as I have been doing for a long time now, and it was about time that the brand reflected that. And of course, I couldn’t resist but incorporate a little heavy metal music into the intro to go with the vibe of the show. If you have any comments or thoughts on the new brand and direction, I’d love to hear from you on Twitter. Just tweet me at @steveglaveski. --- I hope you enjoyed this episode. Episode #274: How to Pitch Anything with Oren Klaff

Oren is Director of Capital Markets at investment bank Intersection Capital where he manages its capital raising platform. From 2003-2008 as he applied his pioneering approaches to raising capital and incorporating neuroscience into the capital markets programs, Oren raised over $2B in investor capital from high net-worth individuals and financial institutions for entrepreneurs. His bestselling book, Pitch Anything: An Innovative Method for Presenting, Persuading and Winning the Deal, has been considered by many to be the sales bible and it’s a book I read when first embarking on my entrepreneurial journey, return to often and it is amongst the books I have gifted and recommended most to other entrepreneurs and sales executives.   We discussed: 1: How to place yourself into a position of power when selling, regardless of the social context 2: How to sell to large organisations who insist on dragging out things and involving various people and committees in the decision making process 3: How to get past people’s innate fear of uncertainty and the unfamiliar when selling new technologies and ways of doing things I was really looking forward to this conversation as a long time fan of Oren’s book, Pitch Anything, and might come across as a bit of a fanboy in this episode so...apologies for that. A heads up, our connection dropped in and out throughout this conversation, however the value bombs that Oren dropped throughout the chat are well worth listening in through to the end.   Expect to not only learn lots about the science of persuasion but also hear some delightful profanity laden stories and learn about Oren’s extensive motorcycle collection. With that, I bring you, the one and only, Oren Klaff. --- Topics Discussed: Selling to large organisations How to best qualify prospects so you don’t waste your time How to use the moral authority frame to get the deal done How to sell ‘new things’ that threaten your prospect’s sense of control and certainty How to put yourself forward as the prize Traps to look out for when selling How to seize situational status Oren’s vast collection of motorbikes and cars Oren’s new book, Persuade Anyone Show Notes: Oren’s website: PitchAnything.com Twitter: @PitchAnything Online Course: PitchMastery.com Get the Book: https://amzn.to/2NtNfLO --- I hope you enjoyed this episode. Episode #273: Seven HUGE Lessons on B2B Sales

Oren Klaff is the author of the classic bestseller on the science of persuasion and getting the deal done, Pitch Anything: An Innovative Method for Presenting, Persuading and Winning the Deal. Since its release in 2011 it has been considered by many to be the sales bible and it’s one of the books I have recommended the most to fellow entrepreneurs, sales professionals and people who just want to get better at, well, persuasion, having first read it when embarking upon my own entrepreneurial journey back in 2012. Unlike most of the books on my overflowing bookcase, I return to Pitch Anything often. Today, Oren is the Director of Capital Markets at investment bank Intersection Capital and founder of Pitch Anything. Oren has applied his neuroscience-based approach to capital raising to secure over $2BN from high net-worth individuals and financial institutions for entrepreneurs. After learning about Oren’s extensively mind boggling collection of motorcycles and cars, we delved into the nitty gritty of doing deals, and it was an opportunity to ask questions based on my own first hand experiences, particularly when it comes to B2B sales and selling to large enterprise. I’ve captured seven of the many key lessons I personally took from my conversation with Oren. You’ll find a hell of a lot more by listening to the entire conversation on Future Squared when it goes live on September 8, and can find a number of resources at the bottom of this post to explore further. With that, I bring you, seven big lessons on B2B sales from my conversation with Oren Klaff. --- I hope you enjoyed this episode.
