Danny Vega | Mistakes Made With The Ketogenic Diet, Keto For Kids, SuperStarch: KKP 72
Today, I am grateful to have here with me, Danny Vega, part of the Fat Fueled Family - a blog, podcast, and YouTube channel dedicated to leading a movement that will empower families to eat better, move more, and grow closer. They invite you into their lives and hope you enjoy their content. In June of 2016, Danny discovered the ketogenic lifestyle, and he never looked back. Danny found so many benefits within a week of switching that he knew this would be the new way of life. Inflammation and injuries from years of playing on turf and beating himself up with heavy lifting were gone. Danny regained control over his hunger and found mental clarity and an increase in productivity that he had never experienced before. In August of 2017, after over a year of dipping their toes in the water, his two boys joined him. Desmond, the eldest, felt an immediate increase in energy and improvement in his allergies and asthma. Dean, the youngest, has had astounding improvements in his eczema and mood. Danny's children are immune to cravings. It has been a fantastic thing to see. They thought their kids were "picky" just like most kids supposedly are; keto changed their taste buds, and now they crave real, nourishing food. Best of all, they do not feel restricted in any way! In this episode, Danny breaks some common myths about the ketogenic diet – during the first three weeks of the diet, you shouldn't be lowering your protein intake. Danny also touches on the importance of salt, potassium, electrolytes, and magnesium. Then, Danny explains why he would carb load during high-performance athletic workouts. Stay tuned to hear the ways Danny's kids utilize the ketogenic diet and how they navigate the kid's menu at restaurants. Plus, Danny reveals the science behind SuperStarch®. Join the Keto Kamp Academy Watch Keto Kamp on YouTube $39 Bottle of Olive Oil for $1.00 [06:45] About Danny Vega Danny was getting recruited to big-name schools for his football skills, even Columbia University. In 2013, Danny got into power lifting – making it into the top 25 in the country. When he deadlifted 700 lbs., he tore his left meniscus. In 2016, Danny’s knee was hurting like crazy, so he decided just to get healthy. He tried a typical bodybuilding diet; they did well. Eventually, he and his wife started on the ketogenic diet. [18:25] Mistakes Made with the Ketogenic Diet There is an obsession with moderating protein. Keto is getting to a point where there is enough information out there that most people think they know what it is. People think if they overeat protein, it will turn into sugar. Danny says you can’t lower protein too much in the first three weeks. Make sure your protein is high in the first three weeks. Aim for five to eight grams of salt per day. Five grams of salt is not five grams of sodium. A teaspoon of salt will give you two grams of sodium. Get to a higher point with your metabolism so you have more to work with. Danny gets women to eat more each day because they do not eat enough. Being undernourished will impede fat loss. It’s not just cramps we should be worrying about. Potassium will help minimize overnight muscle spasms, which may contribute to you waking up in the middle of the night. Keep your electrolytes high and take a magnesium supplement. [28:10] Should You Do a Weekly Scheduled Carb Load? Fifty grams of carbs post-workout was all Danny could give to himself. However, he knew the keto diet wasn’t taking into account high-performance athletes. A fat-adapted athlete is going to be able to eat a lot more carbs. Although, that doesn’t mean they should eat more carbs. Fat can create the sugar that we need. If you are chronically doing high-performance training, your body will be stressed without the carbs. It’s important to have carbs during days like that. Glucose intolerance can act up over time while practicing the ketogenic diet. Use carb loads when you need them; weekly might not necessarily make sense. “Everything should be done strategically.” [34:30] Never Feed Your Kids From The Kid’s Menu This is one of Danny’s biggest pet peeves. We are doing our children such a disservice. If you are trying to conceive, take methylated b vitamins. Breastfeed your children for gut health and immune health. Nurse your babies until they start showing interest in food. Then, cut the babies food into strips. When you go to restaurants, you will see the kid’s menu with mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, and hotdogs. If both parents are together, get both parties on the same page. Talk to your partner about what is okay for your kids to eat. Get rid of all the crap in the house – have a list of non-negotiables. When you go out, have a plan. In the car, Danny pulls up the menu and scopes out the options. “Don’t fight your kids on nutrition.” [47:50] About SuperStarch SuperStarch® is a patented energy source without sugar or stimulants that delivers a slow-release of carbohydrates to steady your blood sugar. With SuperStarch, Danny’s blood sugar doesn’t go crazy. Danny is consulting and spreading the message for supplementing the fat-adapted athlete. SuperStarch® is a smarter energy source to avoid the spike & crash in blood glucose that commonly occurs with most simple carbohydrates like sugars and starches. AND MUCH MORE! Brendan Vermeire | Weight Loss Resistance, Leaky Gut Epidemic, Women & Weight Loss: KKP 69
Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 69 with Brendan Vermiere Today, I am blessed to have here with me Practitioner, Founder, and Owner of Metabolic Solutions LLC, Brendan Dean Vermeire. Brendan has always been an extremely motivated individual and grew up active in martial arts and wrestling among dabbling in other activities. At a young age, he realized the importance of fitness and nutrition. Brendan felt empowered by the idea that he had control over his health and physique. Brendan enlisted in the United States Navy for the prestigious SEAL program. Unfortunately, his SEAL aspirations were cut short due to an inguinal hernia that led to a medical discharge. Brendan transitioned into competitive bodybuilding and started personal training and nutrition coaching at the age of 19. When he started in the industry, he had the pleasure of working with experienced professionals with a vast array of backgrounds and education. Brendan was fortunate enough to gain exposure to many modalities and areas of science. Being an extremely motivated individual, that exposure has set him on a path to learning as much as he can to optimize human health, happiness, and performance. There is nothing more rewarding to me than being able to help individuals attain a level of wellness they never thought possible. In this episode, Brendan explains the difference between health and athletic goals. Exercise is a big piece of the puzzle; however, it isn’t the most significant piece. Then, Brendan describes how he feels to have the privilege to lecture medical doctors on functional medicine – it’s a millennial movement. Later, Brendan says that women make up a majority of his clients and reveals the mindset shift that needs to take place to lose weight and become healthy. Tune in to hear Brendan explain the fundamentals, the relationship between weight-loss resistance and inflammation, and leaky gut.
Fresh Meal Plan - use code: BENAZ Join theKeto Kamp Academy WatchKeto Kamp on YouTube $39 Bottle of Olive Oil for $1.00 [08:50] Difference Between Athletic Goals and Health Goals Brendan knew that he wanted to run lab tests and help people reach their ultimate health goals. However, there is so much in-between on becoming healthy. “You have to get healthy to get into shape.” Cater your exercise regimen to your current physiology. Fitness is essential, yet not the biggest piece of the puzzle. [11:00] Lecturing to Medical Doctors Brendan started in fitness and nutrition. Functional medicine is an extremely popular thing right now. However, there is no such thing as a doctor of functional medicine - there is no standard of education in this field. Millennials will be leading the functional medicine movement. Enrollment into naturopathic medical school is going down. Functional medicine is a free-for-all. Brendan thinks he has a lot of valuable insight starting as a professional trainer. He sees the full spectrum and all the errors in the system. [14:55] The Holistic Savage Brandan finally got into the social media game. You have to put yourself out there if you want something to happen. Brandan didn’t want to be seen as a bodybuilder even though he’s done loads of bodybuilding shows. He is so much more than a bodybuilder. His goal is to elevate the vibrations of consciousness and move people towards a more healthy direction for the sake of the planet. The holistic savage has become its own brand. [19:10] Self-Awareness about Becoming Introverted If you’re not taking care of yourself, then you can’t serve to the best of your ability. Brendan takes time to recharge. If you are in the health field, then most likely, you are a giver. You need to fill your own cup before you can fill others. [20:50] Overcomplicating Everything Brendan is so deep into the health rabbit hole. There is a vast education gap from standard American to the complexities of holistic medicine. At the end of the day, it doesn’t need to be that complicated. We need more general applications. It wouldn’t be constructive for somebody to hyper monitor their state of ketosis. We have never had so much information readily available all the time. There is no magic formula. [23:20] Starting with the Fundamentals FDN – functional diagnostic nutrition. Brendan doesn’t see any other schools focusing on clinical holistic health coaches. Chronic diseases are a result of our lifestyles. We need to cut down our radiation. Medication and supplements should be as needed, not mandatory. [26:30] Women and Weight-Loss Women are more health-conscious and care more about their health. Many women suffer from hormone imbalance and weight-loss resistance. Stress and toxins drive a lot of it. Eating a standard American diet is a big issue that Brendan sees. When people think they need to get in shape – they focus on diet and exercise. Plus, they are fueling the process with self-loathing and a sense of inadequacy. Step one: fuel the health building journey out of unconditional self-love. Practice self-love more regularly. We all judge ourselves – let’s start accepting ourselves and judging less harshly. Loving ourselves enough to have the discipline to practice self-love. Create space for yourself to heal, then apply the fundamental principles. The health and fitness industry uses their marketing by asking if we are unhappy with the way we look. Sleep needs to be a priority. [31:40] What’s Wrong with Eating Less and Moving More Brendan got so sick of his relationship with food. He went back to basics and made his life easier. He said he would eat whenever he wanted with some rules: it has to be real food. Everything comes back to the mind. We need to challenge our belief system and the story that we are telling ourselves. Start with self-awareness, self-love, and eating real food. “The mind is the most powerful thing in the body.” Counting your calories is a big distraction from the things that actually matter. [34:50] The Relationship Between Weight-Loss Resistance and Inflammation What drives disease? Ultimately it’s inflammation and oxidative stress. They go hand-in-hand and are the destructive processes that lead to disease. Have some kind of objective assessment to determine these two variables. Most women have autoimmunity activity in their bodies. Just because you haven’t been diagnosed doesn’t mean autoimmunity isn’t occurring. Autoimmunity is a process where the immune system starts destroying our own tissues. Ultimately, it’s a gut health destruction and a trigger that’s confusing the immune system. If you add up the cases of autoimmunity – it would outrank cancer. All types of cancer are represented by “cancer.” Whereas with autoimmunity, every disease is looked at separately. [41:35] Determining Inflammation and Oxidative Stress What’s triggering these? Environment, lifestyle, food, bugs, and toxins. “We are more microbe than human.” Brendan is working with a lab to bring on inflammation and oxidative stress test to the market. Right now, there isn’t a test to bring both of those answers at a decent price point. As we work through a health program, we should see those numbers go down. Brendan’s favorite way to test for these is on a bunch of different markers on various tests. [45:30] Leaky Gut If you swallow dirty lake water, there are all sorts of bugs in that water. However, there should be a barrier in our gut that protects us. If that barrier is broken, it leaves us susceptible to these bugs. Gluten will trigger leaky gut. AND MUCH MORE! They wanted to help her have a better and more functional life. She started changing her diet and got off her medications. Andrea was able to exercise more. She was no longer the person who was afraid of getting sick because of her weak immune system. When conventional doctors tell someone they can’t do something; it prevents them from ever doing it. “If you believe something, you can actually make that happen.” -Andrea “The brain doesn’t know the difference between fiction and reality.” -Andrea [12:20] About Dr. Sonya Jensen Sonya knew she was on this planet to be of service. From a young age, she knew there was real beauty in our bodies. However, her family members were having poor health issues. Sonya knows that the thoughts we are having will result in physical manifestations. Culture plays such a role in the way we make decisions. Sonya sees how women get so sick because we are natural givers. Women forget to fill their cup up first before others. “Women are the centers of their communities and families.” -Dr. Sonya [15:50] How to Get Off the Hamster Wheel The first step is awareness. What does success look like for us? Assess where you are and where you want to be. What does abundance mean to you? For Andrea, abundance implies freedom. Freedom of time and choosing what she does. Now, Andrea has wholly shifted her lifestyle based on having an abundant life. It depends on what gives you fulfillment. Some people might find fulfillment working harder. Recognize what you want first. [18:35] The Domino Effect of Autoimmune Disease When your immune system is depressed, it will be like a domino effect. Other organs will start getting fatigued. People will treat the symptoms of autoimmune. However, the body is still working really hard to survive. Instead of going after the root cause, people will try and treat the symptoms. The first thing to do is to remove the interference. [20:55] Treating Stress Showing someone how stress is affecting their health is the first step in treating stress. As soon as our cortisol spikes, our other hormone levels will lower. Many people thrive off of stress. We need to reduce the inflammation. Getting into ketosis is a tool of lowering cortisol and getting into a more relaxed state. [24:00] Finding Community Statistics show that people you surround yourself with is what you become like. You need people to pick you up and support you. We, as humans, need each other. Without relationships, there is no growth. If you look at creation, there is nothing that is by itself. [26:20] Stress and Weight-Gain Insulin is associated with stress levels. Your physiology can’t tell the difference between you being upset with your partner and actual danger. Even if you eat the right things, your belly fat might not be disappearing. Sometimes, stress can affect your body more than food does. It is so impactful not just with weight, but also how your body will heal. Are you eating and fasting so much that it is actually stressing you out? “I’m a coach, but I need a coach.” -Andrea [29:45] About the Naturally Brave Retreat We need to step out of our hamster wheel and step into a place that is supportive and safe. It is incredibly hard to practice being parasympathetic on a hamster wheel. At the Naturally Brave Retreat, they will give actual tools to utilize afterward. Andrea and Dr. Sonya are still in touch with their old participants. They will do yoga, fasting, and teach mindset tools. Sonya and Andrea’s favorite part of the retreat was when everybody started teaching and helping each other out. Anybody willing and able to allow themselves to transform is able to attend the retreat. Book the retreat here. [38:35] Having More Awareness in Your Life We do not breath well; most of us do not breath through the belly. If we are not breathing, then we won’t be able to focus, concentrate, or feel nourished. “Breath is our best friend.” Dr. Sonya Sonya loves to utilize the breath of fire. If you’ve been doing keto for a year and you do not see results – then change it up. If you have a morning routine, change it up! Constantly changing is forcing your body to adapt. The body has to rise up to the occasion and do what it needs to do. [47:00] Practicing Gratitude Think about three things you grateful for that you did. Then, make sure to either say it out loud or write it down. There are a lot of people who struggle with thinking about gratitude. Ask someone in your circle what they are grateful for. 150,000 die each day. Just knowing that is enough to be grateful for. AND MUCH MORE! Join the BRAND NEW Keto Kamp Academy today: http://www.ketokampacademy.com . S U M M A R Y 1: 18/6 schedule This is my favorite schedule. When eating focus on keto friendly foods. You can train high intensity during this schedule. Its flexible and its not necessarily cutting calories or eating less, it is eating less often. 2: OMAD I like this approach for someone who has 20 or more pounds to lose. Just don’t do this for too long. We don’t want too much autophagy. 3: 5-1-1 Rule I LOVE this rule. Most people will thrive with this longterm. 4: Block Fasting I like this for someone with autoimmune. Someone who is overweight, and for preventative purposes. My definition of block fasting is 3 or more days. Maximum autophagy. How you break the fast is just as important as the fast itself. I have a video on YouTube called how to break your block fast I will put this in the cards. 5: Dry Fasting 3 to 1 autophagy. There is a hard dry fast and a soft dry fast. USE CAUTION. Bonus tip: Always break your fast with protein and fat. Bonus tip: I don’t recommend much fasting the 5-7 days leading up to your monthly cycle. ▸ [FREE] 🔥E-BOOK: "The Keto Kickstart Guide: 4 Steps to Burning Fat Instead of Sugar" | http://www.ketokickstartguide.com . Thomas Delauer "Gluconeogenesis is Demand Driven Not Supply Driven" | KKP 64
Keto and fasting education Thomas Delauer explains why women should do keto differently than me. Thomas Delauer is an American celebrity trainer, entrepreneur and an author, known for his writings on inflammation inside of the human body. His fitness journey started when he was 12, while studying art history in Italy. After seeing fitness models on magazine covers, Thomas became interested in creating a muscular physique of his own. He quickly developed a passion for exercising. During his early 20s, Thomas took some time away from the gym to focus on his career as an entrepreneur. During that time, he developed some unhealthy habits and became overweight. He realized he needed to get back into the gym, so he spent several months training hard to get back into shape. After several months of hard work, Thomas got his old physique back and decided to start a new business that would compliment his love for fitness, so Thomas became a personal trainer. Ever since he made the switch to fitness, he went on to grow his name successfully, and help clients around the world transform their lifestyles. . Shay Rowbottom, Eat Fats & Organ Meats, Problems With The Vegan Diet, Self Love, LinkedIn: KKP 63
Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 63 with Shay Rowbottom! Today, I have here with me, Shay Rowbottom, influencer, and content creator. Shay has created millions of dollars, millions of followers, and billions of video views for her clients. Shay Rowbottom is the co-founder and former COO of a Facebook agency that worked with companies like Petco, Yahoo, Verlo, and dozens more in creating content and devising content strategies for social media. Since joining the LinkedIn platform in May of 2018, Shay has grown to over 130,000 followers, garnered over 20 million views on her content, and generated seven figures in sales for partnering media companies. Now, she’s ready to share her strategies with you and produce the same kind of results for your brand. In this episode, Shay Rowbottom explains her various health issues growing up, including her permanent cough, acne, digestive problems, asthma, and eczema. Shay’s doctor prescribed her to a low-carb diet, and breathing exercises – all of her health problems were magically gone in a matter of weeks. Then, Shay discusses the many issues with the vegan diet and other food trends in the United States. Stay tuned to hear Shay explain her LinkedIn success and why you need to create a LinkedIn profile! [05:00] About Shay Rowbottom Shay’s mother was very conscious of sugar products and knew that low-fat products were not ideal. At age eleven, Shay became a vegetarian. For four years, Shay did not eat meat (or vegetables)! Her meals consisted of bagels and pizza. At age fifteen, Shay was sick and sluggish. Shay’s immune system was compromised – she had a permanent cough. On top of this, she had acne, digestive problems, asthma, and eczema. Shay saw a doctor who promised she would cure her health issues. The first thing she did was put her on a strict diet of no gluten, dairy, or eggs. Plus, Shay was prescribed breathing exercises. Within two weeks, Shay’s asthma was gone. “My body runs best without carbs.” [13:50] Eating Fats and Organ Meats Organ meats were a total wake up call for Shay. We are not supposed to be eating muscle meat. The heart and liver are where the nutrients are. Beef is delicious – she eats 100% grass-fed pasture-raised red meat. “I’m a beef girl.” All the minerals are in the organ meat. Shay loves the beef heart. [16:45] Problems with the Vegan Diet The commitment is so damaging. In one month, you will feel amazing and decide to commit to it for life. When you start craving meat, your commitment will make you ignore the signs of your body. When you commit, it makes it so hard to get out of the lifestyle. Anytime you define yourself with a diet; you put yourself in a box. If you eat the right animal products, you won’t be contributing negatively to the environment. Any extreme is not good. People get too caught up in the lifestyle. Most vegans will return to eating meat in their lifetime. Your genetics will determine how long it will take for you to get sick. [23:20] Alcohol Cleanse Shay did one month with no alcohol. She never felt better! Then, Shay extended her cleanse to four months. It was such a pleasant experience, and she ended up changing her relationships with alcohol. Sobriety also helps with health. Keto and wine are no fun! Alcohol will raise your glucose and knock you out of ketosis. [27:55] Bad Health Trends The food in the United States isn’t really food. We all go to these restaurants and eat these foods that aren’t real. These foods are killing us slowly. We are a depressed society – we have a lot of issues with unresolved mass trauma. It has created a strong culture of addiction. “We don’t make it easy for people to heal.” At the end of the day, we can blame the system. However, we can also blame the market. Money speaks, and our dollars are buying sugar. [31:00] Vegetable Oils Find restaurants that don’t cook with vegetable oils. If we change where we put our dollars, then we can make a big difference. Tell restaurants you aren’t going to eat foods with vegetable oils. Create your own life. When you love and respect yourself, you don’t want to put harmful foods in your body. “People are sick and tired of being sick and tired.” [33:50] Self-Love A lot of us get away from our intuition as a kid. Shay trusts her gut. She listens to it and follows her gut and knows how to set boundaries. Shay still does the breathing exercises that she learned as a kid. Plus, Shay is easy with herself and forgives herself often. [35:20] Get on LinkedIn Shay got on LinkedIn to attract leads to her business. LinkedIn is the best platform to reach educated people with money. Plus, it gives the most generous reach with video content. You’ll get the cheapest views with the most educated audience. Shay coaches Ben on LinkedIn. Check out Shay’s Linkedin! AND MUCH MORE! Resources from this episode: Visit Shay’s Website
