Dr David Jockers | Best Foods for Keto Diet | Benefits of Intermittent Fasting: KKP 92

On today's episode of The Keto Kamp Podcast, we have Dr. David Jockers, a natural health doctor, functional nutritionist, corrective care chiropractor, exercise physiologist, and certified strength & conditioning specialist. He currently owns and operates Exodus Health Center in Kennesaw, Georgia.   He is also the author of the best-selling book “SuperCharge Your Brain” the complete guide to radically improve your mood, memory and mindset and the SuperCharged Recipe book with over 180 full-color recipes to help you take back control of your health. He has developed six revolutionary online programs with thousands of participants.   These programs include E-guides, recipe guides, meal plans and video instructions including “The Sugar Detox,” “The Cancer Cleanse,” “Navigating the Ketogenic Diet,” and “The Digestive Health Restoration Program,” and “The AutoImmune Elimination Program” and the “Super Brain Program.”   Dr. Jockers is a sought after speaker around the country on such topics as weight loss, brain health, functional exercise, natural detoxification, and disease prevention. Dr. Jockers sees patients at his clinic, Exodus Health Center, to help customize specific lifestyle plans to help individuals improve performance and beat chronic disease.   In this episode, Dr. Jockers opens to the show explaining the benefits of fasting – with fasting, you can maintain weight, muscle mass, and create balance. Plus, Dr. Jockers describes the benefits fasting can have to fight cancer. Stay tuned to hear Dr. Jockers talk about what you need to do if you are plateauing on the ketogenic diet, and he speaks about his latest book, Keto Metabolic Breakthrough.   [00:25] About Dr. Jockers Eventually, Dr. Jockers developed irritable bowel issues and lost thirty pounds. He went from 170 lbs to 130 lbs and had a chronic gut infection. Dr. Jockers started to listen to his body and only ate when he was hungry. At this point, he started playing with intermittent fasting. Jockers developed skin cancer. It was a wake-up call to create balance in his life. After doing some research, Dr. Jockers found the ketogenic diet. Eventually, his skin cancer went away after implementing the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting.   [07:00] The Benefits of Fasting Jockers is trying to maintain his weight and muscle mass. It is easier for him to maintain his muscle mass with fasting. Dr. Jockers likes to fast for brain function – it allows him to think sharply and quickly. Fasting will also help you feel stronger when lifting. Plus, there are mental and emotional benefits of fasting. Jockers doesn’t eat while traveling – there is no need for it. It’s hard for Dr. Jockers to fast through lunch. He fasts through dinner quite often. Having a break during the day is a ritual for most of us. We are addicted to our rituals, and our rituals revolve around food. “The quality of our lives is all about building resiliency.” -Dr. Jockers   [10:50] Fasting Fights Cancer If we are continually stimulating insulin in our body, then we are unable to heal. All of our cells need repair; they are damaged by stress, so we need a regular repair process. We need to take our damaged cells and repair them. It is more energy efficient to repair cells, then replace cells. Cancer is driven by the constant signal to grow. When we remove the signal to grow, then the body can repair. People are worried that fasting will remove muscle. However, the body will get the signal to stay strong and fast. Fasting will result in an increase in strength. Once you get going to the gym, you will feel just as strong if not stronger. Training is the number one stimulus for muscle growth.   [15:50] Does Glucose or Fat Produce More Energy? Glucose is the fastest process. Burning fat is going to take a lot longer. Burning ketones and fatty acids will produce more energy with fewer waste. If we have carbs, we will want to burn those fast. Being metabolically flexible is the ability to switch back and forth. Without food, our body can burn fat and ketones for fuel.   [19:15] The Best Foods to Eat on a Keto Diet Diets need to be customized. People do the best with grass-fed meats, organic eggs, avocados, olives, olive oils, green vegetables, dark chocolate, nuts, seeds, lemons, and limes. You can get most of the benefits of fruits from lemons and limes. Plus, the lemons and limes do not have sugar. Sour foods are good for stimulating bile and stomach acid. Most people have no idea how to stimulate these things. If you are metabolically flexible, then berries are a great source. Consuming too many berries will not allow your body to go into ketosis. We are not getting enough fat-soluble vitamin A. You can find in egg yolk, grass-fed butter, and organ meat. We should do things that stimulate our stomach acid and bile. Bile will sterilize the small intestine.   [26:50] The Biggest Mistake on the Ketogenic Diet Not including enough herbs is the biggest mistake on the ketogenic diet. Often, people are eating too many dairy products and not enough herbs. Some people feel better with less vegetables. However, they will still do well with ginger tea and herbs with their meats.   [28:00] What to do When You Are Plateauing Find out why you are plateauing. Are you actually getting into ketosis? When you are in ketosis, you should not have cravings. If you are not feeling energetic in ketosis, you may have a thyroid issue. Are the outer-third of your eyebrows thinning? This is a common sign of thyroid problems. Test your fasting insulin. You want to see it between two and five. Check for food sensitivity – you may have a sensitivity to coffee, eggs, or dairy. You can also do your own testing by putting something on your tongue and measuring your pulse. Some people need more stress on their system. Intermittent fasting will ramp up fat burning. Exercise will also help. You can also stress your body with temperature changes using cold showers and saunas.   [38:30] About Keto Metabolic Breakthrough It’s a functional medicine approach to the ketogenic diet. In the book, Dr. Jockers explains how to carb cycle and how to overcome plateaus. If you have too much stress on your system, you may not be able to get into ketosis. Which Oil Is Best For Cooking? Can you Cook With Olive Oil? Amazing Benefits of Olive Oil With TJ Robinson: KKP 90

Today I have here with me, T.J. Robinson, aka "The Olive Oil Hunter ®," is one of the world's most respected authorities on all matters olive oil. Known for his “platinum palate,” he is one of the few Americans invited to serve as a judge in prestigious Italian olive oil tasting competitions.   These days he is dedicated to importing rare fresh-pressed olive oil, the most flavorful and healthiest extra virgin olive oil on the planet, until now virtually impossible to obtain year-round in the U.S. All his oils are independently lab tested and certified for 100% purity.   T.J. serves as a personal “olive oil sommelier,” traveling the world, following the sun, seeking out only the best-tasting oils and acquiring them for his Club members right during the olive harvest, as the olive presses are running, when the oils are miraculously flavorful —like no other olive oil you can find in the U.S.   In this episode, T.J. opens the show describing the difference between his olive oil and mass-produced oils. The highest quality olives should still be green, whereas bulk producers will use overripe olives because of the high oil content. Then, T.J. explains the process he goes through to harvest olives and how much work goes behind creating his blends. Stay tuned to hear T.J. talk about the myths behind cooking with oils and what to look for when tasting olive oils.   $39 bottle of Fresh Pressed Olive Oil for $1: http://bit.ly/2uKoXsf   [00:30] About T.J. Robinson J. joined a harvest party with a Sicilian family in Italy. The moment T.J. tasted fresh olive oil, it changed his whole life. Fresh olive oil could change the world, people’s diet, and their health.   [04:30] The Difference Between T.J.’s Olive Oil and Mass-Produced Olive Oil Bulk oil is made up of oils from different countries. When you look at the label, it may have five or six different countries on it. There is very little care with these oils. Some bulk oils can sit in vats for years and years before ever making it to your pantry. J. works with small family farmers who do not have access to the United States market. It is a highly curated collection, following a seasonal harvest. After trying hundreds of oils, T.J. makes test batches and eventually sends the oils out to his club members. The health qualities cannot be compared between T.J.’s olive oil and bulk olive oils.   [08:20] About the Olive Harvest There are over five hundred different olive varieties in Italy. After playing with the varieties, T.J. creates blends. The ripeness of the olives will alter the flavor profile. As the fruit goes from green to black, more oil is created inside the fruit. If the farmer is producing oil for bulk oil, they will leave it on the tree for an extra few months. During this time, it goes from 10% oil to 30% oil. The health-promoting qualities of olive oil are the greatest when it’s super green and not as ripe. Harvesting the fruit when it’s green is not as cost-effective as harvesting it when it’s overripe. Bulk producers harvest when it’s overripe because it produces more oil.   [17:30] Staying Satiated   Olive oil is one of the best fats for staying satiated. Ben will take a shot of olive oil as a crutch when fasting. J.’s olive tastes so good that you can drink it out of a shot glass. The media is finally picking up on the good fats in olive oil. They realize the younger olive oils are better.   [21:00] The Myth About Cooking With Olive Oil Myth: you shouldn’t cook with olive oil. The antioxidants in fresh oil protect it from oxidizing, whether it’s in the body or the frying pan. J. heats his pan first, at the very last minute, T.J. will add his oil. Do not let the oil sit and burn.   [26:40] Taste-Testing Olive Oils Professional taste-testers drink olive oil out of white cups. The color is an indicator of quality. Quality olive oils will have a green tint. Then, swirl the oil and put the cup in the palm of your hand to warm the oil. The first evaluation of the oil will be on the nose. When it is extra-virgin, the oil goes through a professional tasting panel and a chemistry panel. Take a whiff of the oil. You should notice that it smells like being in a vegetable garden. After you have smelled the oil, it is time to place a teaspoon of oil on your palette and chew the oil. T.J. tries to draw a little air in when he tastes. During this, you are looking for bitterness and spiciness. You should feel a tingle in your throat.   [35:20] Uses for Olive Oil Ben takes a shot of olive oil to stay satisfied. He also uses it for eggs, salad dressings, and sautéing vegetables J. likes to use it as a finishing oil. It would be best if you used it as a sauce and can use it to roast vegetables. Fresh olive oil has incredible benefits for the gut microbiome.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: J.’s Deal for Keto Kamp Listeners Follow T.J. On this episode of the Keto Kamp Podcast you will discover 5 ways to beat hunger, for good!   If you'd like health coaching from Ben Azadi, join the Keto Kamp Academy today: http://www.ketokampacademy.com   // O V E R V I E W   The best way to know how healthy your cells and mitochondria are…. Skip a meal and see how you feel. Here’s how you know if your body is metabolically flexible and can practice intermittent fasting or not.     Hunger is normal and healthy Severely hungry with cravings is not normal or healthy: dizzy irritable, lighteheadness, sugar cravings brain fog     1: Hunger comes in waves. Keep yourself busy and ride that wave   2: Increase fat and protein with meals, eat until full. Especially during first 28 days of keto  (hormones that satiate you) CCK Cholecystokinin, Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a hormone produced in your gut when nutrients enter the intestines. GLP-1 plays a major role in keeping blood sugar levels stable, and also makes you feel full.     3: Apple cider vinegar will help stabilize blood sugars   4: Increase electrolytes especially if you drink coffee. I take and recommend MIN by systemic formulas   5: Fasting crutches. Green tea, coffee, coconut oil (catechins and caffeine can help suppress hunger)   Bonus tip, brush your teeth right after your last meal If you are going to snack, do it with fat and protein and have it during eating window     // R E S O U R C E S   ➡️Check out this keto beginners kit: http://www.ketokampkit.com   💊Systemic formulas D digest link: http://bit.ly/2Iy9leA   ➡️Keto Mojo link: http://bit.ly/2KJSGHX   💊Systemic Formulas BIND: http://bit.ly/2XPQCSl   👇Low Carb | Keto Events to Attend:   ➡️I will be speaking at LowCarb USA: http://www.lowcarbusa.org, use the coupon code KETOKAMP for $100 off   ➡️PaleoFX. Dr Paul Saladino, Benefits of Eating Meat on The Carnivore Diet, Dangers of Lectins in Food: KKP 87

Today I interview Dr. Paul Saladino, the leading authority on the science and application of the carnivore diet. He has used this diet to reverse autoimmunity, chronic inflammation, and mental health issues in hundreds of patients, many of whom had been told their conditions were untreatable.   In addition to his podcast, Fundamental Health, he can be found featured on numerous podcasts, including The Minimalists, The Model Health Show, Bulletproof Radio, The Dr. Gundry Podcast, The Ben Greenfield Podcast, Dr. Mercola, Health Theory, Mark Bell’s Power Project, and many others. He has also appeared on The Doctors TV show and will release his first book in 2020 titled, “The Carnivore Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Optimal Health by Returning to our Ancestral Diet.”   Dr. Paul Saladino is board certified in psychiatry and completed a residency at the University of Washington. He also is a certified functional medicine practitioner through the Institute for Functional Medicine. He attended medical school at the University of Arizona, where he worked with Dr. Andrew Weil focusing on integrative medicine and nutritional biochemistry.   Prior to medical school, Dr. Paul worked as a physician assistant in cardiology. It was during this time that he saw first-hand the shortcomings of mainstream Western medicine with its symptom-focused, pharmaceutical-based paradigm. Dr. Paul decided to return to medical school with the hope of better understanding the real roots of chronic disease and illness, and how to correct and reverse these. He now maintains a private practice in San Diego, California, and sees clients from all over the world virtually.   In this episode, Dr. Paul Saladino explains how he started in the health world – he always had a strong desire to be responsible for his own body. Dr. Paul defines the carnivore diet. The diet cuts out all plants and is entirely animal-based. By removing plants from your diet, plant toxins will also get cut out. Dr. Paul reveals which plants should be removed from your diet because of toxicity. Stop eating seeds, leafy greens, and sweet fruits to avoid nasty toxins. Stay tuned to hear Dr. Paul explain the problems with Game Changers.   [00:30] About Dr. Paul Saladino Paul wanted to be able to fix his own car. When he got sick, he also wanted to be able to fix his health. “We are part of this bodily machine. I want my machine to be as tuned as can be.” – Dr. Paul Saladino Paul didn’t want to go to the doctor to find out that he needs medicine, and just have to believe that. He wants to be the agent of his health and his family’s health.   [13:30] About the Carnivore Diet It’s a diet that is entirely based on animal foods and excludes all plant foods. There’s a version of the diet that does include some plant foods. Anything you can hunt is going to be animal food. Carnivore diets exclude plant foods and appreciate the spectrum of plant toxicity. Paul gives people the tools to make the right choice for them. When Dr. Paul made the transition from paleo to carnivore, he cut out all the plant foods. There are toxins in plants that he completely eliminated. Plant toxins can be damaging to the gut. Leaky gut is gaining more widespread acceptance.   [21:00] The Practice of Fasting Paul is at the weight he wants to be at. He does not use fasting as a tool. Fasting can be used as a valuable tool. We need to be careful about how we use it. For some people, fasting may be too much.   [22:30] The Carnivore Code The book is entirely written with 425 references. Paul wants the book to be readable, yet he wants to include all the science. You can preorder The Carnivore Code here. Paul’s favorite thing about the book is the anthropology. The first part of the book is all about humans.   [33:10] Plant Toxicity Spectrum   Plants and animals have been coevolving. Plants have always been absorbing toxins. The seeds of plants are most vulnerable. Grains, seeds, beans, and nuts are all seeds. If a plant is putting energy into making a reproductive part, they are going to put the most toxins in the seed to prevent them from consumption. If a plant is full grown and you eat one or two leaves, it won’t kill the plant. Eating the seeds will kill the future of the plants. Paul says not to eat all the nuts as most keto followers do. Other high toxic plants are spinach, rhubarb, beets, and almonds. Eliminate all seeds, leafy greens, and sweet fruits.   [46:15] Living a Radical Life A radical lifestyle includes occasional fasting, low-carb diet, exercise, sun, cold, and heat exposure. These activities will result in optimal antioxidant status and longevity genes. We do not need plant molecules for longevity genes. We can take anti-inflammatory medicine; however, there are long-term effects of medicines. We do not need many plant molecules because there are adverse side effects, just like medicine.   [50:00] Side Effects to Eating Animal Meat Animals do not make defense compounds like plants do. Animals have the ability to defend themselves. The majority of animals do not have toxins in their muscles. The cooking of foods will create toxins for humans. The lower the temperature you cook, it will lessen the cooking toxins. The higher the temperature and the faster we cook, the higher the chance of toxins. Grain-fed meat is going to be higher in toxins. We will bioaccumulate pesticides and mold.   [54:50] The Problems with Game Changers Listen to Discussing The Game Changers w/ Dr. Paul Saladino Game Changers relies on nonscientific experiments with shock value to prove their point that plant-based diets are healthier. Game Changers did not present the athletes honestly. Vegan diets are not giving people superpowers in the athletic realm. The movie is doing much more harm than it is good.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Check out Carnivore MD Follow Dr. Paul Saladino Twitter Instagram Facebook YouTube Listen to the Fundamental Health Podcast Preorder The Carnivore Code Email drpaul@carnivoremd.com Listen to Can we live forever? Mike Mutzel | How The Ketogenic Diet Can Improve Gut Function & Influence Longevity Genes: KKP 85

Today, I have here with me, Mike Mutzel, YouTuber, podcaster, and teacher of leading-edge science that can be utilized by progressive clinicians for the prevention of chronic disease. Often termed Translational Medicine, this bench-to-bedside approach is critical to ensure the application of pioneering research and concepts in systems biology, a preventative health care setting, optimizing patient outcomes.   Mike earned his B.S. in Biology from Western Washington University in 2006 and completed his M.S. in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport in 2015 and is a graduate of the Institute for Functional Medicine’s (IFM) Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP).   He is a Functional Medicine consultant in the natural product industry and has worked as a nutritionist with Gerard Guillory, MD of the Care Group, P.C. in Denver, CO. Mike has lectured alongside Dr. Guillory to large patient-groups in the Denver area, and they have been featured on local T.V. programs discussing the power of Nutrition and Functional Medicine.   In April of 2014, Mike published his first book, Belly Fat Effect: The Real Secret About How Your Diet, Intestinal Health, and Gut Bacteria Help You Burn Fat.   In this episode, Mike Mutzel describes how he started in the health world and why he is so attracted to gut health. Mike explains the importance of a diverse diet and how seasonal eating could be the key to health. Plus, bile is essential for healthy digestion and absorption of fats. Stay tuned for Mike to talk about the problem with Game Changers and how to utilize our parasympathetic tones.   [00:30] About Mike Mutzel Mike got involved in the health world when he started bicycle racing. For the first time in his life, Mike felt depression - he didn’t know what was wrong with him but knew he needed to test his hormones. Mike’s testosterone was extremely low. He started to find out how the food he was eating was affecting his testosterone levels. Overtraining can also affect testosterone. Mike works with doctors to help their patients with diet and lifestyle changes. His YouTube channel launched in 2012. Don’t be afraid to put out YouTube videos; you are going to get better over time.   [11:30] About Our Guts All the crappy foods we eat are high in calories and carbohydrates. They also perturb our microbiome. Microbiome contributes to the inflammatory tone in our bodies. If there is an imbalance, our immune system will also be out of whack. When we eat carbs, and our blood sugar goes up, that is only part of the story. Our brain is connected to our gut. The mechanical exposure to foods affects the different cells. Before we swallow things, our body is anticipating the food. If we train our brain to chew food mindlessly, then that is what will keep happening. We need to slow down, chew our foods, and put down the forks. Fasting will also come into play. We do not need to eat every two to three hours. “A lot of people don’t even know if they are hungry or not anymore.” -Mike Mutzel   [18:15] The Importance of a Diverse Diet A lack of diversity is a lack of stability. People with allergies seem to fair better with a low-carb diet. It’s exactly the opposite of what many people thought five years ago. We cannot totally manipulate our diet to have massive swings in the immune system. Be mindful of ketones, and keep track of your vitals. There are healthy people with low diversity and unhealthy people with high diversity.   [21:45] Seasonal Eating Mike personally emphasizes seasonal eating. He is grateful and fortunate enough to have the financial resources to eat seasonally. Some people do not have the income or resources to eat seasonally. Seasonal eating is an essential piece of the puzzle. Even though blueberries are considered a healthy food; it’s healthy food out of context. Once you get the fast food out of the house and prioritize sleeping, then you can start thinking about eating seasonally.   [33:00] The Importance of Healthy Bile   Bile makes it all the way to the heart and the brain. Bile is so important and underutilized. Mike promotes bile salts. When people are constipated, recirculating bile is not healthy.   [37:10] The Problem with Game Changers The movie is compelling, and loads of people are convinced to go vegan. Mike has tried a vegan diet; it doesn’t accelerate recovery. On a vegan diet, our cells do not regenerate faster. Mike has no problems eating vegetables and fruits. You didn’t see any of the food people ate until the credits. The foods they were eating were a lot of grains.   [44:30] What is the Parasympathetic Tone? Our nervous system has two personalities. Fight or flight mode and relax mode. So many people are hung up in the fight or flight mode. We need to be proactive about unwinding our fight or flight mode. Yoga and meditation are effective and unwinding our fight or flight. There are anti-inflammatory properties when we are in the parasympathetic state. We can refuel our bodies and improve our heart rate variability.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Check out High Intensity Health Follow Mike Mutzel Twitter Instagram Facebook YouTube Read Belly Fat Effect: The Real Secret About How Your Diet, Intestinal Health, and Gut Bacteria Help You Burn Fat. 5 Hidden Sources Causing Inflammation (And What to do About Them!) - Ben Azadi: KKP 83

On this episode of the Keto Kamp Podcast you will discover 5 hidden sources of inflammation.   If you'd like health coaching from Ben Azadi, join the Keto Kamp Academy today: http://www.ketokampacademy.com   // O V E R V I E W   1: Eating right before bed   When you consume calories, you are converting those calories to energy. The metabolism thats required to do that generates something called reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS creates free radicals that are damaging to your cells and your mitochondrial DNA, which are then transferred to your nuclear DNA. Your body ages from the damaging aspects of excessive ROS. Eat before bed = age faster. Your energy consumption drops dramatically when you are sleeping. This tends to expand the production of ROS when you don't use the energy. Higher amounts of ROS = cellular damage. This can damage your tissue, your cell membrane, which is the bodyguard of your cell. Additionally, when your body has to digest food during sleep; it takes energy away from recover repair and fat burning and diverts it to digesting food. It takes massive amounts of resources and blood flow to digest food. The first 4 hours of sleep are the most crucial when it comes to getting the most important stage. This is called money time sleep window. 98% of fat burning takes place during stage 4 sleep. This is why I recommend fasting at least 3 hours before bed. Your future self with thank you for it. 🙏   2: Snacking in between meals   The average person eats 17-21 time per day Insulin is the bully of the block     3: Sitting down too much   Sitting is the new smoking Movement over exercise Walking is underrated      4: Being zapped by EMF’s   Turn off wifi before bed Put phone on airplane mode Practice grounding Check out Nicholas Pinealts book     5: Hating yourself    Love and gratitude are two of the biggest healers Stress weight gain and cortisol    // R E S O U R C E S   ➡️Check out this keto beginners kit: http://www.ketokampkit.com   💊Systemic formulas D digest link: http://bit.ly/2Iy9leA   ➡️Keto Mojo link: http://bit.ly/2KJSGHX   💊Systemic Formulas BIND: http://bit.ly/2XPQCSl   👇Low Carb | Keto Events to Attend:   ➡️I will be speaking at LowCarb USA: http://www.lowcarbusa.org, use the coupon code KETOKAMP for $100 off   ➡️PaleoFX.
