269: Carol Sanford — How to Create a Responsible Business

Why does responsibility matter? Why should there be balance? Why is all of this even important? Today’s guest has some answers and suggestions on how you can become a more responsible business. Carol Sanford is an award-winning Business Educator, Summit Producer, Podcaster, and Author. She is a regularly recognized thought leader and has worked alongside Fortune 500 companies like Google, DuPont, Intel, P&G, and more over the last four decades. When Carol went to Berkeley, a man named Thomas Kuhn opened her up to a whole new world of different perspectives. Combining this with the memorable moments Carol spent with her grandparents, who were half Mohawk and lived off the land, Carol saw how one tiny change could create drastic impacts.   Carol decided to take what she learned from Thomas and create a framework that would help you see what kind of paradigm you were living under, understand the impacts of that paradigm, and work on ways you can change it for the better.   Although Carol wrote her book, The Responsible Business, nearly 15 years ago, the book is going through a re-release right now, the core of that book dives into helping corporations (and nonprofits) understand that the way they run the business is changing and affecting the lives of everyone who buys and interacts with them. It’s not just about profit or growth or teams, it’s so much more than that.   Interview Links: Sponsored by: Bit.ly/clariontech Carolsanford.com Carol on Twitter Carol’s book: The Responsible Business The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, by Thomas Kuhn   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops? Getting Real with Mark Colgan — Speak On Podcasts

Today’s Getting Real episode is all podcast guest booking, when it makes sense to start a podcast, and of course, it highlights this entrepreneur’s journey, how he got into this space, and some of his challenges. Mark Colgan is an Entrepreneur and Revenue Leader responsible for increasing revenue across a small portfolio of companies where he leverages his 13 years’ experience in B2B Sales, Marketing, and Recruitment. Mark started his career in a sales role and grew his career path into interviewing candidates and pitching them to open roles as a recruitment consultant. Mark grew up in a very traditional household and was determined to follow the same path. After a few years in corporate, Mark decided to take a leap year, but by luck or fate, people were still knocking on his door asking him for work. He discovered that he could do exactly what he was doing before, just remotely, with fewer hours, and for more money. It’s been a dream ever since. Mark shares a little bit about his business model and why he’s different. When it comes to podcast guest booking agencies, Mark sees his clients as an extension of their brand, so it’s important that they get the pitch right. Bill agrees, he gets cold pitches all the time and rarely accepts because it’s not on brand with his podcast. The value in the service he provides is in the human touch and providing a relative service for both the podcast host and the guest speaker. There are a million podcasts out there. Bill believes it’s important to be a guest on a hundred podcasts first before creating your own show.   Interview Links: Markcolgan.co.uk Mark on LinkedIn Sponsored by: Eonetwork.org & Bit.ly/clariontech   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops? 268: Michael Cardamone — Creative Ways to Fund Your SaaS Company

If you are a Founder of a SaaS company then this is an episode you do not want to miss. Today’s guest works directly with SaaS companies and knows the inner workings of how to raise the capital you need in your business. Michael Cardamone was one of the first 30 employees at Box in a BD role and then later led partnerships at AcademixDirect. After six years of being in operating roles, Michael launched Forum Ventures, a BSB SaaS-Focused Accelerator and Fund based in NYC and Toronto. Michael is seven years into his company and he’s already on his fourth fund for the accelerator and has worked with over 200 companies. Some of Michael’s entrepreneurs have never even stepped into Silicon Valley and have raised several millions of dollars. The VC landscape is rapidly changing to find companies outside of California and New York. Michael sees the benefits, too. You want more diversity? Take advantage of the global landscape and hire team members from all over the world to get a different cultural perspective. Countless studies have shown that when a company has more diversity, they are adaptable and more empathic to all different types of users. One thing that founders don’t think about enough is how will investors value your business? What is their process and how do you fare in that process? A great way to make yourself stand out is to bring data points and market research to the fold to showcase how you’re thinking about your target market differently and the types of risks you foresee in your industry. Investors love to see a bit of legwork being done, even if the memo isn’t all roses and positive.   Interview Links: Sponsored by: Bit.ly/clariontech Forumvc.com Michael on Twitter   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops? 267: Heather Hansen — The Art of Asking for What You Want

If you don’t ask, you don’t receive, but there’s an eloquent way of asking in order for you to have it all. It first starts with being an advocate for yourself and your needs. You are your own best advocate and today’s guest will show you how to get exactly what you ask for. Heather Hansen is a Lawyer, Self-Advocacy Expert, Coach, Author, and sought-after international speaker. She’s also the Founder and CEO of Advocate to Win, a consulting business where she’s given thousands of clients the knowledge and tools they need to become better advocates and gain support and engagement for their big ideas. Still an active lawyer, Heather was named one of the top female attorneys in Pennsylvania and she represented doctors, nurses, and hospitals throughout her career. The reason why she was so good at what she does was that she helped teach her clients how to be advocates for themselves. However, throughout Heather’s career, although she was good at advocating for others, she wasn’t the best at advocating for herself. Little did she know at the time, everyone is an advocate. If you’re selling, marketing, and/or leading, you’re an advocate. When it comes to building credibility, it’s a three-part process. It starts with trusting yourself, believing in yourself, and collecting the data needed to build your case to rally those around you. Heather cautions people about faking it till you make it because people can often see right through that.   Interview Links: Sponsored by: Sweetprocess.com Heatherhansenpresents.com   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops? Tuesday’s Tips — Struggling to Find Happiness?

Are you suffering through some circumstances right now that you can’t seem to get out of? Are you feeling really frustrated? It sucks to be going through this in the moment, but the good news is, there is a solution. You can find a way out of this. When Bill turned 40, he found himself in a unique place. He had everything he wanted, he had accomplished a lot in his life at that time, yet, why was he so unhappy? Why was he suffering? He felt trapped by his circumstances. The first thing Bill did was to take stock and recognize he wasn’t happy. Then, he re-examined his life. He started at the root. He looked at his relationship with his family, with his parents, with his siblings, and what his life had brought him at key points in his life. He uncovered something interesting. Bill knew he was a natural leader, he was smart, he knew he had qualities that not many could beat. However, he could always find someone else who was slightly better than him. This comparison completely stole his joy. It felt like everything he achieved up until that point, was failing. When the reality was, it wasn’t.   Resources: Scaling Up for Business Growth Workshop: Take the first step to mastering the Rockefeller Habits by attending one of our workshops. 266: Scaling Up Insights — Coach Panel with Dominic Monkhouse and Daniel Marcos

There’s a lot to cover in this week’s Scaling Up Insights show! We have two returning guests, Dominic Monkhouse and Daniel Marcos. Both of these growth coaches talk about what’s on their summer reading list, understanding customer and employee data, and inflation making a comeback! All this and more, in today’s episode. Bust Buy’s Turnaround time really is a gift of wonders. Daniel shares an example of why he chose them over Amazon for a particular retail purchase. He was amazed! In and out in less than five minutes and he didn’t even have to leave his car. The future truly is wonderful. People are so quick to blame Amazon for disrupting and ruining other industries. Best Buy said no, it’s not Amazon’s fault. It’s ours. It’s our lack of execution that’s put us in this position. When they took ownership of their own shortcomings, they were able to innovate greatly, and you also kind of have COVID-19 to thank for that, too. Dominic is surprised we still have poor customer service issues in 2021. Some people just hate human beings. Dominic sat down with his wife at a cafe. They overheard the wait staff complaining about them for ordering only two things. Why are you here? When it comes to employee motivations, you can’t hire a motivational speaker to excite and entice your staff. Daniel believes you either create a company that gets them motivated, or you face the consequences of selling a product no one cares about.   Interview Links:   Sponsored by: Bit.ly/clariontech   Dominic: Monkhouseandcompany.com Daniel: Danielmarcos.co The Heart of Business: Leadership Principles for the Next Era of Capitalism, by Hubert Joly Big Night (1996) Miracle (2004)   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops? Tuesday’s Tips — In a Rut?

Are you feeling a bit off right now? Or maybe you’ve felt a little “blah” in the past and you’ve slowly gotten yourself out of it, but you’ve always wondered how did you get into that place in the first place? Bill’s got a tip for you. Bill had a client come to him during a team coaching session and he admitted he was feeling kind of off. It was like, overnight, he lost his passion and he wanted out. Bill spent some time listening to him and he could tell this was just a feeling he was going through at the moment. It wasn’t a core belief he had rooted into. When this happens to Bill’s coaching clients, it’s really helpful to take a minute to work backward and reflect when you started feeling this way. You can do this by yourself or have a partner help you through this reflection period. Ask yourself the question, “When was I feeling okay? And when did this feeling shift?” The answers might not come to you right away but trust the process. There was a moment that made you switch from feeling great about your business to feeling meh about it. Did you have some intentions or expectations that didn’t go according to plan? Did you just not get what you wanted? Are you a little irritated? When did you start just “going through the motions”?   Resources: Scaling Up for Business Growth Workshop: Take the first step to mastering the Rockefeller Habits by attending one of our workshops. Getting Real with René Serbon — Dermal Systems Inc.

This week’s exciting entrepreneur is René Serbon! She is an International Skin Expert and Aesthetician. She helps people grow their skin business in a unique way and René consults fellow Aestheticians, Physicians, and Dermatologists to become confident and profitable entrepreneurs. René not only helps her clients grow, but she also provides additional education on the latest skin treatments, products, and procedures. Her business serves two-fold, both as an education and consulting business as well as a distribution business. René has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. She begged her parents to homeschool her, and when they did, she set up a small clothing shop on the side. She grew up in a very medical-centric family, and decided to follow in her family’s footsteps (somewhat). When René stepped into the skin and beauty world, she got bit by the bug. She loved helping people feel confident. She could see in real-time the difference she was making in people’s lives and she didn’t want to stop! You might think bad skin is such a superficial thing and what’s on the inside matters. That’s true. However, bad skin, bad teeth, or some sort of unique “human issue” really can wreak havoc on an individual’s confidence. It might seem small, but René has personally witnessed people’s personalities blossom just by healing their skin.   Interview Links: Renéserbon.com Dermalsystems.com René on LinkedIn Sponsored by: Eonetwork.org   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops?
