Inside Encyclopedia Dramatica: Drugs, Death and Doxxing (ft. Oddguy) [Ep. 62]

100% of *Patreon* funds go to making The Create Unknown, and you can get early access to episodes for just $2: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw We interview classy, professional creators on The Create Unknown. Oddguy isn’t one of them. He’s an admin of one of the internet’s most infamous sources of degeneracy: Encyclopedia Dramatica. ED has been a constant source of controversy for 15 years, and it’s alternately celebrated as hilarious and vilified for being both hateful and destructive. After talking to Oddguy and learning about lawsuits, criminal activity, and frivolity, it’s probably both. Buckle up Space Cowboys, because this is our wildest episode yet. What’s Encyclopedia Dramatica and why should it even exist in the first place? Oddguy explains the role of a site like ED in the broad realm of online speech, the incompetence of past admins, and the hot water it’s gotten them into. What’s the best way to find out what ED is really all about? Kevin reading his own Vsauce2 entry on ED. The interplay between themes of comedy and tragedy drive both ED content and reactions to it. We talk about the effect ED might have on mental health, and exactly what the site’s target demographic is. Then we discuss the longevity online content has and its effect on someone’s image. Do people have a right to be forgotten, or is everything on the internet permanent? Does a person’s age play a role in whether they should be forgiven? Encyclopedia Dramatica is no stranger to scandal, and that includes lawsuits. Several lawsuits. Oddguy gives us a short history ED’s lawsuits and lolsuits, as well as a rundown of their most recent court challenge -- and it’s all developing in real-time. After talking to OddGuy about his own personal YouTube content -- truth streams -- we take some questions from our patrons. They want to know about the future of Encyclopedia Dramatica and the future of edgy content as a whole. Why does the website look like it hands out viruses like Halloween candy, and why keep going in the face of so many lawsuits? Thanks again to ALL our patrons for making this show happen, and to Oddguy for joining us on an episode that had to be heavily edited before release -- and those patrons who showed up for the live, unedited recording got a show they’ll never forget. 🎥 CREDITS: Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. 💬 CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. The Brilliant, Dangerous Mind of Michael Reeves [Ep. 61]

100% of *Patreon* funds go to making The Create Unknown, and you can get early access to episodes for just $2: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Find *Michael* Here: *YouTube:* https://www.youtube.com/c/MichaelReeves/videos *Twitch:* https://www.twitch.tv/michaelreeves *Merch:* https://www.pissbaby.art/ *Michael Reeves* is a singularly-brilliant mind and one of our most requested guests. His unrivaled coding ability and creative vision have given life to amazing inventions like “The Roomba That Screams When it Bumps Into Stuff” and “Trigger Me Elmo,” and he streams most of the design process on Twitch to offer a peek at what it’s like inside the mind of YouTube’s resident mad scientist. Today, Michael takes a break from designing his masterpieces to sit down with us on The Create Unknown. Every generation needs a scientific figurehead. Mr. Wizard and Bill Nye dominated the 20th century. Is Michael Reeves the next generation of science, engineering, and coding entertainment? We also learn the incredible lengths Matt has gone to just to record this episode -- and why he sounds like a tornado warning broadcaster. After that we explore Michael’s most recent project: The Laser Baby. He partnered with Amazon for their series “The Boys,” but he took a pretty unconventional approach to promoting the show. Kevin talks about his wildly different experience with making sponsored videos, and it leaves us wondering: just how did Michael pull it off? Michael makes some of the most unique and fun videos on YouTube, so how does he come up with his bizarre, unique ideas? He also employs an abnormal editing process, which may keep him from hiring an editor and also throw a wrench into collaborations. Then we get down to business. We talk about Michael’s former work experience as a software developer, his near-experience as a psychiatrist, and even his time working for the government. He also tells us about his self-teaching method that he used to learn everything he knows about software engineering -- and it’s much cheaper than you might think. Oh, and we also learn about Michael’s explosive, podcast-interrupting bladder. Finally, we take some questions from our patrons who have been saving these up for the year and a half they’ve begged Michael to Enter the Unknown. They want to know all the watchlists he’s probably on, the average cost of his projects, and how he keeps coaxing his friends and loved ones into his various taser-laden death traps. A huge thank you to all of our baby-saving patrons -- you really make this show happen. And thanks to Michael for joining us! Whang’s research for his “Tales From the Internet” series has taken him to some odd places, so is there anything that he finds weird at this point? Or is he just desensitized to it all? We kick off the episode by finding out his shockingly tame answer. And then we talk about what he really does with his “Immortality Rings.” We discuss Whang’s life on Twitter and the invaluable currency that is the Whang Retweet. He tells us what kind of material makes the cut, what happens when a retweet goes wrong, and how Kevin’s 1980’s computer swimsuit tweet took on a horrible life of its own. Whang’s made several successful series on his YouTube channel, and that plays into a discussion about a shift to longer-form, documentarian style content like iDubbbz, Internet Historian, and more. But the recipe for that sort of content is delicate; Whang tells us what makes his videos successful *and* what he avoids. Then we get stupid. Online genius is remarkably dumb. Are the Paul brothers and Belle Delphine secret geniuses? And what sort of perceptions of a creator influence the content they actually make? Can “internet good guys” like Boogie ever change course? In addition to YouTube, Whang plays in the band Jynx -- and that career trajectory has been a wild ride. From starting off in high school to touring Europe to… why he sings Rick Astley at karaoke. Patrons want to know about the caloric value of a box in one of Whang’s infamous videos, which topics he refuses to touch, his craziest experience working as an extra on TV sets, and more. GloZell Green Rises, Falls And Tells All [Ep. 59]

100% of *Patreon* funds go to making The Create Unknown, and you can get early access to episodes for just $2: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Find GloZell Here: GloZell: https://www.youtube.com/user/glozell1 Million Stories Website: https://www.millionstories.com/ Faceplant Series: https://www.millionstories.com/series/Faceplant?id=3 Million Stories IG: https://www.instagram.com/millionstoriesmedia/ *GloZell Green* exploded into one of YouTube’s earliest viral sensations, and she found massive success that gave her years of videos that were all guaranteed to rack up views. She built a loyal audience and a tremendous presence on the platform to the point where she was the face of YouTube. The woman who made “My Push Up Bra Will Help Me Get My Man” and “The Cinnamon Challenge ... by GloZell and her Big Behind Earrings” was sitting directly across from President Obama for an exclusive interview. As GloZell made money, she wasn’t afraid to spend it -- but that cashflow didn’t last forever. The algorithm changed and crushed her channel. Millions of views per video turned into tens of thousands, and times got tough… fast. She’s entered The Create Unknown to tell us exactly what that rise, fall, and re-birth was like (and how you can avoid it). We open up the episode by pulling back the curtain on what it was like to have it all. We wanted to know what the most outlandish, lavish purchase she made at the peak of her career was -- and her answer would’ve lived in a jar in an 18th century doctor’s office. She tells us about all sorts of bad decisions and how her peers only fueled the madness. After that we talk about the reason it all went south: the algorithm change. The system went from favoring short, easily digestible, viral content to supporting longer, ten minute videos almost exclusively. This hit many of YouTube’s original creators like a truck, causing so many like GloZell to fall to the wayside. She tells us what she did after she hit the bottom, what her social life was like after the money started to run out, what she would’ve done differently if she had another shot at it all, and how exactly she’s adapted to reinvigorate her career. Finally, we get into some questions from our patrons who tuned in LIVE to see GloZell in action. They want to know what puts a smile on her face, her feelings toward work on projects like Escape the Night, the difference between making a YouTube video and working in old school media, and just how much money it would take for her to spend the next 4300 years as a series of ducks. And Baby Gang Jeff’s question about hot sauce took the episode in a direction we *really* didn’t expect. Thank you to each and every one of our patrons -- you really do make every episode of this show happen. Thank you as well to GloZell for joining us! He came up with C&H as a sick teenager and joined with amazing talent to blow it up into a massive, instantly-recognizable brand. So who *is* Kris Wilson? We hear about his life before his online career took off and where it all started, making comics as a break from animation, and exactly why Newgrounds was a lot more “free love compared to YouTube.” Then we dive into a topic that’s important for creators who want to expand: working alone versus working with a team. Maintaining a cohesive idea while dividing the workload is something that Kris has mastered, and it’s why he has a team of 24 full time artists and animators. But what’s it take to make a successful webcomic? What pitfalls do so many creators fall into along the way? Is a complex comic the best way to go, or is simple more effective? Kris also details the biggest mistake artists make when it comes to making a comic, and it’s probably a surprise. Kevin talks about the Tik Tok Effect, which is the creation of content when constrained by time and other hard limitations. We find out how this phenomenon has affected his and Matt’s perspective on making long form content on Vsauce2, and how making restrictive content leads to success in new ways. Oh -- and we also find out about Scott Kurtz’ jealousy and hatred for the Cyanide and Happiness brand. And finally we take some questions from our perpetually-supportive patrons. They want to know whether Kris has seen Netflix’s “Cuties,” the origin of the catchy “Cyanide and Happiness” name, advice for other ex-Mormons, and his philosophy on content theft. We also get some fantastic news about Kevin’s early birthday gift LIVE on the air. And as always, a massive thank you to all our patrons for directly supporting the show, and to Kris for imparting his wisdom so that we can all get a little closer to happiness (and a little further from cyanide). Doplex: The YouTuber's YouTuber [Ep. 57]

100% of Patreon funds go to making The Create Unknown, and you can get early access to episodes for just $2: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our DISCORD to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Doplex on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbePKlapLzoLkPOjB4TYckQ Doplex is one of the most unique, talented creators on YouTube -- and that’s why so many amazingly popular channels love him. So, it’s time to meet him for yourself. From his work on Rooster Teeth’s Inside Gaming to his own high-aesthetic videos and music, Doplex is one-stop entertainment. And after two years of waiting, he’s finally joining us on The Create Unknown. And that begs the question: why doesn’t Doplex have 1 million subs by now? So many big YouTube names have showered him with compliments, and the hype for every new Doplex release is strong. We talk about why that might be and how the process of making videos for his channel plays into it. Then we dive into his work on Rooster Teeth’s Inside Gaming and what it’s like to do what you love on someone else’s dime. Kevin gives us some sage-like wisdom on working for the sake of passion versus a paycheck, and how that relates to his experience with Vsauce2. Doplex tells us about the hardships of making a video written entirely by an AI, and how it may or may not have been an excuse to perform a Mariah Carey song for us all. He also outlines his process for making his ever-popular “Internet Oddities” series, and just how much it would cost for him to wrestle you... in bits. And retro gaming emerges as a common interest shared between all members of the panel. When exactly does a gaming system become retro? Then we discuss Doplex’s favorite game, and the subject of one of his most masterful videos: Super Mario World. This leads Matt to do a Ben Shapiro WAP-style rendition of the original Mario rap written at the end of that video. You can check out the original here, and trust me, you’ll want to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYiFDkW5ztM Doplex survives a grilling by our patrons, who ask him to invent a sponsor for this episode, and he graciously funnels us some cash to promote Doplex Scissors (patent pending). He can’t escape without giving the full background on his puppet companion Naked Man and explaining how he handled living with his former roommate Harvey Weinstein. We also learn why The Create Unknown is a better podcast than one of its stiffest competitors: The First Podcast, which Doplex will now co-host with Lars. We are at war with T1 Podcast. We have always been at war with T1 Podcast (except when we were guests on it, which was awesome). Glink’s socially-focused documentary mindset and Slush’s clear, deeply-researched conclusions collide to form *Gush* : their new podcast that takes on the pressing issues and topics in the YouTube landscape. Check out their stuff here: *Gush Podcast* : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChJT4Jg89AHMyybcXFeKp_A *Slush* : https://www.youtube.com/user/samfdigital *Glink* : https://www.youtube.com/user/GlinkLegend We kick off the episode by calling on Glink’s recent video about online father figures to find out who they think their “online daddies” are, as well as their online mommies. Then we get their take on the issue of censorship on YouTube, and they conclude that, “The rules have never been more ambiguous.” Is that because of the corporate structure of YouTube and Google? Then it’s a bit of Vidcon analysis. Is the convention itself really what brings creators together? If not, what is? We find that the Tik Tok child-filled convention center may not be the most useful professional locus, and we talk about Matt’s big plans for a new convention that would bring out the very best parts of Vidcon… and without all the bad parts. This leads us into a discussion about age on the internet, and if it’s even relevant any more. Oh, and Matt comes to the shocking realization that Keemstar is about halfway to drawing from Social Security. Let that sink in. Then we talk OnlyFans and the dangers that it may or may not bring. Does OnlyFans provide a healthy contribution to online life, or does it create a parasocial relationship that both sides should consider avoiding? What we do know is that we just accidentally launched a joint venture called OnlyFriends. Slush shares his experiences with an online crime of the highest order: content theft. And are reaction streamers just stealing content? Should they have to stop watching live or remove stream reuploads at the creator’s request? There’s a lot of thievery going on. We cap off the episode with some questions from our patrons who are dying to know the pair’s opinions on retro gaming and the state of the troubled Smash Bros. community. There’s a lot to unpack there -- and then The Kino Corner conspires to extend the episode by a few hours by asking about each of their favorite albums. A huge thank you to all our patrons who make the show happen, and to Slush and Glink for joining us. Check out their individual channels *and* the Gush podcast! We ask Ian about the justification of Leafy’s removal and how it ties into the his Content Cop on Leafy also being taken down. But does it really set a “scary precedent?” And what does Leafy’s ban mean for the future of the platform? Then we talk about the subject of Ian’s latest documentary, Daxflame. Ian met Madison at a Jacksfilms’ bachelor party, and their conversation eventually led to the hour-long ‘Ice Cream Man’ documentary. Check out both of Ian’s documentaries and Dax’s newest game show episode here: *Full Force:* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfwPL-bd_mk ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfwPL-bd_mk ) *Ice Cream Man:* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYk4ymtQ1WM ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYk4ymtQ1WM ) *Daxflame’s Smoothie Madness Episode 2:* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnjALU4Bus8 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnjALU4Bus8 ) Oh, and we also learn that Matt chased down Dax at Vidcon like a starstruck fan -- or creep -- just to snap a picture with him. We get slightly existential when Ian asks Matt and Kevin if they “need more in their life” as they get older. Matt had enough after trying to buy a light bulb in Tel Aviv, while Kevin expresses his love for conquering nature. Ian’s done the normal thing and evolved his content as he’s aged. Ian details why he thinks TikTok is the future of content creation and why he thinks TikTok is the “perfect loop” of consumption. Kevin weighs in with his own experience using the app and how the platform’s time limitations played into adjusting his long-form process. Our patrons ask about the fate of Content Cop and Kickstarter Crap, the status of Ian’s upcoming mobile game “Pocket Squirrels,” and about the gruesome end that awaits the remainder of his fan mail. Lastly, as is with every episode, we ask Ian what his fursona is -- and he saw it coming. Thank you to all our patrons who make The Create Unknown happen, and thanks again to Ian for coming back on! *🎥 CREDITS:* Hosts: Kevin Lieber ( https://twitter.com/kevinlieber ) and Matt Tabor ( https://twitter.com/TaborTCU ) Edited and Produced by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com ( http://megadrivemusic.com/ ) Makeup: Mo Lewit → https://www.instagram.com/mo_the_makeup_madame/ Photography: Paula Lieber → https://www.etsy.com/shop/Craftality "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. 💬 CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: http://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com ( https://thecreateunknown.com/ ) Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. He even brought his dog Kevin along for the ride, effectively doubling the Kevin concentration of this episode… and perhaps even squaring it. Weest starts by describing what it’s like to live like a true gamer, including adopting a sleep schedule designed to avoid “peak human hours” and how Overwatch has dominated his life for 4 years. He may be ranked in the Top 500 players of the game, but he’s still convinced that he’s terrible at it. Then we examine Weest’s career as a content creator, and the strange origins of his internet fame. He tells us about his humble beginnings as a “radio personality” on iFunny -- and about how the toxic community there took away any empathy he may have had left. Weest details his transition to YouTube, and the rise and fall of the cursed “AmandyXD” series. A forensic analysis of the phenomenon of the “Coom Cave” shows Weest’s real depth as a content creator, and probably gets our episode demonetized. Then it’s time for internet drama. We ask some pretty important questions, like whether any of it actually matters. Is an apology just a PR move? Do people really care, or do they just want to be mad? Weest reveals some deep thoughts about how he’s handled involvement in high-profile issues in the past, and what he’ll do differently in the future. We round out the episode with some questions from our patrons -- and they start off strong. Jake Roper of Vsauce3 needed to know some very important information: how many hot dogs can Weest fit in his mouth? After we find out exactly that (through a live demonstration, described on audio the best we can), we learn the worst insult levied at his friend Brandon/WildSpartanz, and of course, about Weest’s surprisingly graphic fursona. Thank you to each and every one of our patrons who continue to make this show happen, and thanks again to Weest for joining us! 🎥 CREDITS: Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. 💬 CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: discord.gg/qAQV3Jw » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. Oh, and if you haven’t seen the show yet, you’re seriously missing out. *Check out the first two episodes here:* https://www.adultswim.com/videos/yolo-crystal-fantasy Michael has made *Koala Man, Damo & Darren, and the Rick & Morty's "Bushworld Adventures."* He knows humor -- but what does a comedic genius think is funny? Not only do we find that out, but we also conclude why things are funny in the first place and how the high school experience plays into it all. Then we venture into Michael’s storied career as an animator and how he got to where he is now. He tells us about how his inspiration to make animation on YouTube actually came from a short he saw on Vimeo, and how that all eventually spiraled into his beautiful partnership with friend of the show Psychicpebbles -- the Co-Creator of Adult Swim's “Smiling Friends.” Then we cap off the career talk by discussing Michael’s new show, “YOLO: Crystal Fantasy,” spawned straight from his short series on YouTube. Michael flexes his artistic talent by creating a pitch for his next hit show: Mr. Bluegal. It’s a heart-wrenching story of civil war in the town of Goblagoo, Australia, which only has a couple dozen people. Even so, it's set to have a grand finale to end all finales. Then our patrons ask Michael about the fate of “Smiling Friends.” Will there be more episodes? Will we see Charlie and Pim again? We also find out about Michael’s near-fatal Subway wound? And lastly, Michael reveals his Aussie-inspired fursona. Thanks to all our patrons who keep the show going, and thanks again to Michael for joining us! *🎥 CREDITS:* Hosts: Kevin Lieber ( https://twitter.com/kevinlieber ) and Matt Tabor ( https://twitter.com/TaborTCU ) Edited by John Swan → https://youtube.com/johnswanyt Produced by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com Makeup: Mo Lewit → https://www.instagram.com/mo_the_makeup_madame/ Photography: Paula Lieber → https://www.etsy.com/shop/Craftality "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. 💬 CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: http://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices.
