Struggling with Scott Cramer [Ep. 72]

His commentary channel -- which Matt describes as a rare ‘wholesome’ channel in the genre -- just hit 500,000 subscribers, but to Scott, it still feels like 500. And the struggle has just begun. Scott’s got a simple approach to YouTube; he makes stuff he likes and that he hopes the audience enjoys. He has a more complex approach to lie detector tests, which he became familiar with during work for a municipal police department -- and one specific question during his own lie detector test really threw him. And who would Scott like to administer a lie detector test to? Shane Dawson, partly to find out the truth about Cheeto. One of the best parts of Scott’s Twitter feed is his highlighting of comments that are just… so infuriating you have to laugh at them. Some people just don’t want him to make a living, and others don’t want him to enjoy himself EVER. The takeaway? They don’t get how any of this works. Last week’s episode with SumitoMedia covered the Warrant song “Cherry Pie,” and Scott admits it’s his favorite song in the history of music. We hit the origin of Scott’s community of “Strugglers” and what it’s been like to build a channel from scratch and eventually ditch a nice full-time job for full-time YouTube. He’s pretty hopeful that 2021 will offer plenty of opportunities for creators to be original and develop new, viable content -- even if Twitch and other platforms keep moving the goalposts and changing the rules of the game. The Patrons end the episode by asking about Scott’s favorite YouTubers, his inspirations, Disney conspiracy theories, and the drip-drop of eggnog dancing on one’s delicate palette. Thanks to everyone who showed up for this right before Christmas Eve and to everyone who has supported us throughout 2020. We ended the year in an amazing position with great momentum, and we’ve got a few big things planned for the beginning of 2021. 🎥 CREDITS: Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com ( http://megadrivemusic.com/ ) Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. 💬 CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com ( https://thecreateunknown.com/ ) Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. Meme Master SumitoMedia Talks Cyberpunk and Simps [Ep. 71]

Listen to us on *Apple Podcasts:* https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-create-unknown/id1437172203 *Spotify:* https://open.spotify.com/show/0Tl7tpMssVqt7O4qej8Ro0 100% of *Patreon* funds go to making The Create Unknown, and you can get early access to episodes for just $2: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw *SumitoMedia* is recognized globally as a master of the meme -- but he’s also got thoughts on exactly what gamers should be able to do with wiener customization in AAA titles. And just a few minutes in, it’s easy to understand how Sumit can pull off recording videos every week by relying on his broad knowledge of internet happenings instead of writing detailed scripts. So, how does a guy who studied electrical engineering and computer science wind up analyzing memes? It’s actually a cleaner path than it seems, aside from a period of discovery in which he realized he wasn’t going to be the next Austin Evans. All 3 of us had a long, grinding road to what we do now, and Sumit explains the point at which he was able to flip the switch into full-time mode. A disagreement about comedian Bert Kreischer leads to one of The Create Unknown’s most serious, divisive battles in 71 episodes: The Great Cherry Pie War of 2020. Warrant’s classic might just be the song that breaks up this podcast. Then it’s Twitch time, as we discuss the implications of Twitch’s new policy changes on speech. Is it really a big deal that “simp” and “incel” are now bannable words? The Patron army jumps in to ask Sumit about Kid Cudi, the best and worst memes of 2020, the future of memes in 2021, and a surprisingly sensible fursona. Thanks again to all the patrons who make every episode of this show possible, and thanks to everyone new who showed up to the live Discord recording! 🎥 CREDITS: Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com ( http://megadrivemusic.com/ ) Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. 💬 CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com ( https://thecreateunknown.com/ ) Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. Jschlatt: The King of Cancellation and Cereal Residue [Ep. 70]

We start by analyzing his failed 2020 presidential campaign, including his brief foray into being verified and his platform of “ban women.” Then it’s onto what people do with Minecraft money and his experience witnessing captainsparklez greenhouse supercar flex. With such a unique perspective and amalgamation of life experience, who will be jschlatt’s running mate in 2024? It isn’t one of the Lunch Club of Traves, Ted Nivison, Slimecicle or Hugbox. Then cereal warfare breaks out, and it gets *heated*. We’ve got cereal tier ranking problems so severe that it almost ends the episode. After reconciling, we analyze boneless wings and lactose intolerance before nuzzling up to the elephant in the room: jschlatt’s perpetual propensity for getting cancelled. What’s he do on YouTube, Twitch, and Twitter to fuel this, and… does any of it really matter? One thing we know for sure is that jschlatt’s not going to move to LA anytime soon -- and neither are Matt and Kevin, who have done their time in that city and are thrilled to have made it out alive. The patrons machine gun questions at jschlatt about his favorite movie, the keyboards he breaks, his 10 year plan, and where his content is headed in 2021. Thanks again to all the patrons for making this show happen and to everyone who showed up to lurk live! 🎥 CREDITS: Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com ( http://megadrivemusic.com/ ) Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. 💬 CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com ( https://thecreateunknown.com/ ) Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. Why Kevin Killed Vsauce2’s Mind Blow [Ep. 69]

Listen to us on *Apple Podcasts:* https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-create-unknown/id1437172203 *Spotify:* https://open.spotify.com/show/0Tl7tpMssVqt7O4qej8Ro0 100% of *Patreon* funds go to making The Create Unknown, and you can get early access to episodes for just $2: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Mind Blow was one of Vsauce2’s longest-running series, and over several years Kevin racked up over 100 episodes showcasing the cool, the weird, and the amazing in the worlds of science and technology. For 3 years, people have asked Kevin every single day about why he doesn’t do Mind Blow anymore -- so now we’re taking some time to talk about why Mind Blow’s window had to close, and why it’s so important to stop making certain types of content. First, Kevin details what the show is NOT called, because that’s surprisingly controversial. We hit a breakdown of what Mind Blow was and why it was structured in a certain way, and we find out that Kevin actually invented YouTube Chapters. One of the elements that made Mind Blow so successful was Kevin’s thoroughness and his commitment to detail. But did that actually make it harder to compete with other content creators, and especially with larger networks? Did he make a mistake by being honest? The chat weighs in about what would blow their minds, and we eventually realize that YouTube just stopped favoring content in Mind Blow’s format. At a certain point it made sense to evaluate the opportunity cost of continuing Mind Blow in comparison to other opportunities in the marketplace, and to decide whether it was the best way to serve his audience. And that brings us to general lessons about killing content you like, and even that a portion of your audience likes. When is it time to pull the plug? How much should you respect the wishes of your most rabid fans, especially if they run counter to what’s best for you? Jake from Vsauce3 has a theory about what REALLY happened to Mind Blow, we talk about what should be on your Christmas list, and we find out how much data is contained within a single sperm cell. So, yeah. Normal. 🎥 CREDITS: Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com ( http://megadrivemusic.com/ ) Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. 💬 CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com ( https://thecreateunknown.com/ ) Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. The best part of this podcast is the community of people that’s come together around it -- so this week we decided to hang out with everyone and talk about… everything. Like Kevin finding fault in parents’ propensity to use food as bribes, while Matt thinks the McDonald’s $1 double cheeseburger is the greatest nutritional advance in human history. The live chat wants to know what Kevin’s been playing on the PS5 and how Demon’s Souls encourages multiple playthroughs. The live chat is OUTRAGED by Taco Bell’s menu changes, and it seems they miss the grilled stuft burrito the most. Matt’s still not over MatPat’s incorrect take about the location of milk in grocery stores, which he rages about on Discord nearly every day. Matt wants to learn Hebrew or Russian and be able to run. Kevin wants to learn Japanese and play the drums. We both have a long list of regrets. We get derailed into a serious discussion of the role of ‘passion’ in the work we do. Kevin and Matt have different but similar opinions on this, and they conclude that the real answer isn’t so much in passion and enjoyment as it is in finding meaning in the work you do. We really do love this community, and that’s why we’ve committed to reeling in another ‘white whale’ of a guest in 2021. He’s had some crazy streams lately, including one in which he got $5,000 in donations and bit through his mobile phone. He still likes to party, but it’s unlikely that he’ll have a repeat of his famous 2018 passing out stream that was the result of an entire liter of rum. Now Eggy’s into rapping, and it’s a frequent feature on his streams. He’s got a lifetime of experience to throw into his bars, from the insane 4chan hoax experience to a high-profile relationship melting down. But where’d it all begin for him on YouTube? Primink’s now-deleted video, which turned out to be an amazing thing for both of them. We hear details of the FBI showing up at Eggy’s house, tales from the gas station, and a complete rundown on exactly who buys each type of cigarette. And that’s a lead-in to our excellent Patreon questions, including the most and least kino moments in Eggy’s life. Thanks to all of our Patrons for making this show possible, and a deep, sincere thank you to Eggy not just for talking to us for so long, but sticking around for a few hours in the aftershow chat! 🎥 CREDITS: Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. 💬 CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. Austin Evans Talks Tech, Business and Bullying [Ep. 66]

100% of *Patreon* funds go to making The Create Unknown, and you can get early access to episodes for just $2: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Austin Evans on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXGgrKt94gR6lmN4aN3mYTg Austin on Twitter: https://twitter.com/austinnotduncan The life of Austin Evans took some unexpected early turns, and what seemed to be a difficult situation turned into a legendary career reviewing technology on YouTube -- and years later, he’s still going as strong as ever. Austin explains what it’s been like navigating the ever-changing tech space and whether it’s any easier or harder now than it was back in the day. At this point, he’s got help, and a major theme of our discussion is how he’s managed to build a team that can execute his vision reliably and faithfully. But did he wait too long on building out the brand of Austin Evans? The real question for the audience is whether bullying works out for people. Wait, WHAT? No. But sometimes. But no. In the early days, Austin was inspired by everything from Harry Potter to Lemony Snicket -- and oddly enough, it influences how he approaches his YouTube tech content. Patrons ask about what Austin would do if YouTube disappeared tomorrow, whether he’d roll on TikTok, whether he’s ever going to get a Rainbow Charizard, if tech is easier or harder than other YouTube verticals, and… who’s actually sponsoring this episode. Thanks to all our Patrons for making this happen each and every week, and thanks to Austin for taking so much time to hang out! The High Art of Cultivating Cringe with ManyKudos [Ep. 65]

In a little over a year, he’s grown from 0 to 10,000 subs -- and he enters The Create Unknown to explain how he’s balanced slowly building an audience of his content with an audience who just plain likes *him*. It’s tempting to rip on lolcows and famous disasters, but Kudos explains that he’s got a bit of a moral code that guides his videos. With his Belle Delphine video, he approached the topic by respecting her privacy and keeping an appropriate distance. And that’s why he’s selling “Teethpaste” for $31. Matt and Kudos actually met in Australia last year, and Matt ended up making Kudos vomit -- but the real story is that Kevin actually invented the notion of gamer bathwater and tub-related activities. It raises a point about whether people should like your content, like you, or both. Lots of people dislike Cool Cat. Some people like eating decades-old MREs. And it’s perfectly valid to start a YouTube channel showcasing miniature radio-controlled construction equipment moving dirt in your basement. But how has ManyKudos used all of this to refine his approach to his next video subject, the chalice-wielding YandereDev? Patrons end the episode by asking Kudos where his name came from, whether he’d ever go completely hairless, whether his charity extends to a random neighbor asking for a cup of sugar, and more. Thanks to Kudos for entering the Unknown and to all the patrons, from Tots to Babies, who keep the TCU hamster wheel churning and burning. Christine Weston Chandler and Sonichu Exclusive Interview [Ep. 64]

Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Support Christine Weston Chandler on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=4525122 Few internet personalities are as famous as Sonichu, formerly known as Christine Weston Chandler (Mama), CWC, Chris-Chan, and Christian. Sonichu’s lore extends back well over a decade, and it’s so detailed and well-archived that Gene Samuel’s documentary series is on its 44th episode of 40-minute videos. There’s a lot to unpack. We’ve wanted to talk to Sonichu and Christine for so long that it had to be a 2-year birthday to the TCU community and to us. We start by figuring out exactly who is joining us this week, because it’s not Christine. A few months ago Christine and her creation Sonichu switched bodies, so we ended up speaking with Sonichu herself, who could speak through Mama. Who and what is Sonichu? Where did Sonichu come from? We find out the truth behind the origin of the electric hedgehog and a legendary symbol of its power: the Sonichu Medallion. Then it’s on to Sonichu’s and Mama’s creative process. How exactly were the original Sonichu comics made? How were they published? What is their future? In the process, we find out what Sonichu’s daily life as a goddess is about. Our own dimension’s merge with C-197 (in which all superheroes, Original and Fictional characters exist) is forthcoming, and Sonichu explains the differences between the merged world and ours right now. And finally, as always, we take some questions from our full house of LIVE patrons. They want to know about Mama’s all-time favorite My Little Pony episode, and about her expansive collection of memorabilia. They also want the answers to some pretty serious questions: how has Mama dealt with the haters and trolls for so many years? How is she holding up today? And Mama’s answer might be the best advice anyone has ever given on The Create Unknown. Thank you to all of our patrons for supporting the show, and thanks to Sonichu for making this such a special episode for TCU and its community. Is Mr. Beast the Last YouTuber? [Ep. 63]

100% of *Patreon* funds go to making The Create Unknown, and you can get early access to episodes for just $2: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw It’s time to rejoice babies and gents -- The Create Unknown is entering its Terrible Twos. And to celebrate the second anniversary of the show, this week we highlight the three pillars it was built on: Kevin, Matt, and most importantly, the TCU community. To kick off our birthday bash, we talk about what makes that community so great and the creative network it has spawned. Even through the limitations of COVID, creators have been able to thrive and do what they do best: create. The TCU community is no exception, and between the Discord server, social media, and patreon, our listeners and supporters have landed some pretty sweet gigs. Kevin also gives us all a hot take on Fortnite concerts. Look out Travis Scott... Kevin’s on your tail. It wouldn’t be an episode of TCU without mention of the latest (and possibly greatest?) platform for content creation: Tik Tok. We want to know if it’s even worth bothering with something like YouTube at this point. Is Tik Tok just better? Is there any money in it at all? Find out what WE’RE doing on Tik Tok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMJmSyDFa/ The Tik Tok discussion makes us get a little introspective about YouTube. With all the popularity shifting to places like Twitch and Tik Tok, we gotta ask: is YouTube boomer? Is it a thing of the past like jazz? Will people look at YouTubers like we look at rock stars from the ‘70s and ‘80s? Is Mr. Beast the LAST YouTuber? Finally, we close the festivities by taking questions from the people who make this show happen, and have for over a year and a half: our patrons. They want to know about Kevin’s gamer life, which gives us an unexpected look at how Matt tests the limits of the Playstation 4. We also finally learn what Kevin’s fursona is after he has “hounded” our guests about theirs for so long, and about the brushes our beloved hosts have had with Death himself. Thank you again to all of our patrons who keep this show going, and thank you to each and every one of you for listening. We love you, Space Cowboys, and we look forward to another 37 years of The Create Unknown.
