Strength of body and mind with @actionalexa

In this powerful episode of The Aging Project, we're talking with Alexa, also known as @actionalexa on instagram. Alexa shares her incredible life journey of resilience and self-discovery, offering valuable insights on building strength of body and mind, self-care, and living life to the fullest. Discussion Topics Alexa's Story Hip Replacement and Near Death Experience: On August 12, 2017, Alexa was admitted to the hospital for a routine hip replacement. She experienced a rare 1 in 10,000 anaphylactic reaction to antibiotics, flatlined, and was resuscitated four times. This near-death experience taught her the value of appreciating every day. Early Adversity: At 15, Alexa's mother was diagnosed with manic depression, making home life unsafe. She was bullied at school for being too skinny, leading her to the gym for connection and empowerment.  Sobriety Journey: Alexa struggled with binge drinking from ages 15 to 19, influenced by her father’s alcoholism. Her journey to sobriety was difficult, but she overcame it, learning the importance of asking for help and reassessing her training and lifestyle. Self-Care through Joyful Activities: Create a list of activities you love and commit to doing at least one of them each day. This simple practice can significantly enhance your contentment and happiness. Strength Matters as We Age: Maintaining strength is crucial for functional independence. Alexa encourages everyone to find ways to feel stronger, whether it’s starting with a few push-ups on an incline or incorporating other simple strength-building exercises into your routine.  Functional Independence: Alexa’s goal is to remain functionally independent and continue doing the things she loves with the people she loves every day. She inspires listeners to adopt this mindset and find their path to getting stronger. Mindset and Resilience: Alexa’s story is a testament to the power of mindset. She emphasises that everyone faces adversity, but it’s our choice to overcome it. Strength training provides an opportunity to seek challenges and build resilience. Addiction: Alexa’s struggle with alcohol taught her that addiction is not romantic and overcoming it requires a strong support system and self-awareness. What REALLY happens when you SLEEP, with Dr Carmel Harrington

Join us as we dive into the fascinating world of sleep with Dr. Carmel Harrington, a leading sleep expert whose journey from biochemistry and law to sleep research was driven by personal tragedy. In this episode, Dr. Harrington shares invaluable insights on why sleep is crucial for longevity and health, especially for women experiencing hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause. Key Points:Dr. Carmel’s Story-Transitioned from biochemistry to law, then focused on sleep research after losing her child to SIDS.-Became a single mother raising two young children, authored several books along with starting her Sleep for Health clinic.  Sleep Requirements:-Adults need 7-9 hours of sleep, while newborns require about 16 hours. - Women need more sleep than men-Contrary to myths, sleep needs remain constant into old age. The Mystery of Sleep:-Sleep is a distinct neural state, not mere rest or unconsciousness.-Involves cycles of wakefulness, light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep, each lasting 90-110 minutes.-Five full sleep cycles are needed every 24 hours for optimal health. Challenges with Aging-Women need more sleep than men post-puberty but often struggle to get it.-Hormonal changes during menopause can significantly disrupt sleep. Improving Sleep-Importance of stress management, hydration, and establishing a pre-sleep routine.-Effects of hot flashes, stress, and hormonal changes on sleep quality.-Role of light exposure, circadian rhythm, and sleep hygiene. Risks of Poor Sleep-Increased risk of metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular diseases, and cognitive issues.-Sleep debt can accumulate and impact overall health. Practical Tips: -Take the hour before sleep seriously! -Stay hydrated, avoid heavy meals close to bedtime, and maintain a cool sleeping environment.Use breathable bedding -Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing before sleep. Carmel’s Favourite Life Motto:- "Get knocked down seven times, but stand up eight." Final Thoughts:Understanding and prioritising sleep can significantly enhance longevity and quality of life.Embrace the journey of improving your sleep habits for a healthier, happier life.
