I'm An Adult With ADHD And I Stole My Son's Ritalin

Can you identify with how Kim Livingston felt when she wanted to clean, but was somehow unable to attack the chaos? Simple tasks seemed complex because she couldn’t find a starting point, and didn’t see a clear set of steps ahead. Let’s set aside the judgment that the title generates and in the nearly 20 years since this all took place Kim has had plenty of time to reflect back on that moment. She has recently released her first book, “Walks Like a Duck: How a Mom with ADHD Led Her Neurodiverse Family to Peace of Mind” and in this episode we get to talk to Kim about the book, her thoughts about her reverse-diagnosis, and what she wishes people knew or understood better about ADHD.   Kim R. Livingston teaches English at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, Illinois, and is an advocate of community colleges everywhere. Growing up, Kim’s family was neurodivergent, and three decades of teaching have made Kim an even more passionate advocate of neurodiversity. She sees value in our differences and understands that intelligence has many faces. Her first book, “Walks Like a Duck: How a Mom with ADHD Led Her Neurodiverse Family to Peace of Mind,” was recently published by TouchPoint Press. Beyond Labels: Navigating ADHD and Queerness with Dylan Alter

Happy Pride Month! On today’s show, we revisit our conversation with Dylan Alter, an advocate for ADHD awareness and the founder of NeuroQueer.org, a community that supports adults who are LGBTQ+ and neurodiverse. Dylan shares their personal journey, starting from a decade-long struggle with depression to finally being diagnosed with ADHD. They discuss how ADHD intersects with the queer experience, highlighting the parallel challenges of navigating identities in a world that may not understand or accommodate their needs. Dylan does a great job of walking through the similarities between ADHD and the Queer experience, emphasizing the significance of creating inclusive spaces where individuals can find understanding, compassion, and a sense of home. Dylan's dedication to building this community stems from a deep-rooted desire to facilitate empathy and empower others, ultimately strengthening the collective bond of the community. Dylan Alter is the founder of NeuroQueer.org and is also an ADHD coach, working with both the non-profit and in his own private practice AlternativeADHD.com. He is non-binary, neurodivergent and has Jewish and Choctaw background.    Links to NeuroQueer.org: Website | Instagram    Links to AlternativeADHD.com: Website |   Add us on Social Media: Instagram: @lindsayguentzel @refocusedpod @adhdonline Twitter: @lindsayguentzel @refocusedpod @adhdonline   Email Lindsay: hello@refocusedpod.com   Thank you for listening! Empowering Neurodiverse Athletes with Michael Shipper

What difficulties might children with ADHD experience in sports? Are some sports better for kids with ADHD? Are individual or group sports a better fit? We're diving into the role that sports and athletics can play in the life of a neurodiverse person with Michael Shipper. If you are in the midst of signing your kids up for all of the summer activities, this is one you won't want to miss. And if you don't have kids, I guarantee you’ll be able to connect our conversation back to your own childhood and fit it into the growth you're working on right now.   Michael Shipper is a certified personal trainer who has been working with special needs athletes for over 15 years. His philosophy is one of INclusion, not EXclusion. He is the founder of Empowered Sports & Fitness, which works with neurodiverse athletes who may have learning disabilities like ADHD and others. His overall objective is to enable any person, regardless of ability or background, to have an active life through play and ultimately develop a long-term love for exercise.   Michael Shipper links: Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | Website | TikTok   Add us on Social Media: Instagram: @lindsayguentzel @refocusedpod @adhdonline Twitter: @lindsayguentzel @refocusedpod @adhdonline   Email Lindsay: hello@refocusedpod.com   We appreciate you taking the time to listen! The Adderall Shortage: Looking at America’s Mental Health Crisis with Michael A. Cohen

Michael A. Cohen is a columnist for MSNBC, a fellow for the Eurasia Group Foundation and is the publisher of the newsletter Truth and Consequences. He also has ADHD and is one of the many Americans who has struggled to fill his Adderall prescription over the last few years. On April 29th, he published the opinion piece, "The Adderall Shortage is the Mental Health Crisis No One's Talking About" on The Daily Beast, sharing parts of his own story intertwined with a handful of interviews he did, including a conversation with Rep. Abigal Spanberger (D-VA). Spanberger is one of the only members of Congress to acknowledge the shortage and the strain it is putting on people right now.  Michael recently sat down with Refocused host Lindsay Guentzel for a look at what pushed him to write the piece, as well as a look at what he learned while researching and writing the piece.    Add us on Social Media: Instagram: @lindsayguentzel @refocusedpod @adhdonline Twitter: @lindsayguentzel @refocusedpod @adhdonline   Email Lindsay: hello@refocusedpod.com   We appreciate you taking the time to listen! Lindsay Hits Reset For Mental Health Awareness Month

What does it mean to be at capacity? After the last five months, Refocused host Lindsay Guentzel is there -- but if she's honest, she's probably been living at capacity for years. And that's an incredibly difficult place for a person with ADHD to be.  Today's episode is full of honesty, some very exciting news and some oversharing, for sure. It's not how the Refocused team wanted to highlight Mental Health Awareness Month but we've learned an important lesson on working with what you got.  One topic Lindsay dives into that has some recommended homework with it is the idea of languishing, a topic psychologist and author Adam Grant explored in his April 2021 piece for the New York Times.  To support the work we're doing, we've made it a little easier for you to follow “Refocused” on your favorite podcast-listening app and while you’re there, please leave a review - it really helps to spread all the goodness.
