Rand and the party arrive at Barthanes' manor. We analyze Rand's conversation with Barthanes. Rand thinks he's making small talk, but everything that comes out of his mouth appears to be a deft maneuver in the Great Game to Barthanes. There's so much going on in this conversation, Galldrian's reliance on imported Andoran grain, and his obsession with expensive projects that make him appear more powerful, are perceived by Barthanes as weaknesses. We talk about the previous contact between the Black Wind, Padan Fain, AND Mordeth. Each interaction between these ancient evils changes and enhances their nature. The longer they stay, the deeper Rand becomes tangled in Daes Daes'mar.  When Rand leaves the inn to see if Ingtar and the Shienarans have arrived to bail him out, he returns to find that it's now a structure fire.  Hurin was attacked, and the chest stolen. Verin, Mat, Perrin, and the Shienarans arrive just a few minutes too late. Does Verin know that Selene is Lanfear?  She has all the clues, and has often understood more with less information. Was Barthanes at the infamous Darkfriend social? Was Verin?  Could Rand have channeled using only the Choedan Kal with out the access key, is that possible? In the wake of the early Seanchan invasion, Geofram Bornhald is in Almoth Plain under the orders of Pedron Niall, stirring up chaos. The Questioners are doing their best work to help, and Bornhald does not approve of their methods. We talk about the Seanchan navy, their encounters with the SeaFolk, and how that likely went down. Bayle Domon is stopped by a Seanchan ship and redirected to Falme for his ship's hold to be examined. We see our first example of a Damane in action. We also see the Seanchan's creatures, their military, and a member of the Blood. As Perrin guides the Shienaran lances south toward Cairhien, the wolves tell him there are people in the mountains to the east. The Wise Ones have sent warriors across the Spine of the World in search of their Car'a'carn. An Aielman emerges from the rocky terrain, and presents himself to the party. "My name is Urien, of the Two Spires sept of the Reyn Aiel.  I am a Red Shield.  Remember me." Rand and Loial are attacked by Trollocs in the streets of the fore-gate. Selene shows up out of nowhere, as usual, just as Rand and Loial are being chased to the edge of the city. Chased in the direction...of the Illuminator's compound. Aludra is there, so close to the Dragon, and her fate is sealed from the moment Rand uses her night-flowers to effortlessly vaporize a group of Trollocs. We talk about about the history of Cairhien, including the refugees of the Aiel war who live in the fore-gate community, and why Galldrian feels he has to placate that community using food, festivals, and fireworks. Rand starts receiving the infamous letters. It seems he's tangled in Daes Da'mar, but we know The Game is just tangling itself in Rand's web. While wandering around the Foregate, he runs into the king of the Great Game, Thom Merrilin. Thom quotes some of the Karaethon cycle to Rand in private, we believe he knows his quotes are relevant to Rand's life, although we're not sure exactly how much he understands. Egwene is lead to her rooms in the novice quarters of the White Tower. A room she will share with Elayne Trakand. Elayne talks about how few novices there are, and asks about Rand. We talk about how the population of channelers has slowly been culled since the breaking of the world. By chance on their way to meet Min, the ladies run into a gentled Logain wandering the halls of the Tower, casually talking about suicide. Min also asks after Rand. She has a few viewings, and we explain them one by one. Gawyn and Galad run into the young women, and Galad is clearly interested in Egwene, but she's to starry eyed to notice anything, including Gawyn. We wonder why the heading for this chapter is the dagger, but come to no real conclusions. Moiraine and Lan make a stop at the home of two retired Aes Sedai. We talk about Moiraine's conversation with Vandene in detail. Her questions are very revealing. Lan and Moiraine have the infamous conversation about his bond being passed. A Draghkar swoops down on Moiraine while she's walking alone. We've got no way to prove it, but fans of the series agree, Liandrin sent it. The Innkeeper and guests try to make sense of Rand and his party. No one believes Rand's story, as usual. He doesn't look likes he from the west, Selene doesn't look like she's from Cairhien in the east, and why are they traveling with an Ogier? Rand's has a conversation with a Cairhienin military captain. Daes Dae'mar begins. Rand has no idea what he's fallen into, and that is his greatest strength. We believe Lanfear quickly dismisses herself so as not to be discovered by the captain who would know she's not from the local nobility. She disappears in the night, but leaves Rand a note.
