Nynaeve and Elayne stay in Falme while they plan how to free Min and Egwene. They sell their clothes, and buy some in the local style. Nynaeve has been practicing opening A’dam with the power, and she’s figured it out. They they run into Min outside the Damane stables, and the three hatch a plan to free Egwene. Free her from becoming a possession, a weapon, and a tool. Egwene is being tortured repeatedly, and even she can tell that she's near her breaking point. We talk about the A’dam, how it works, how one can be trained with it, who can use it, and why anyone will eventually be broken. Egwene is a powerful woman, and the Seanchan see her as an extremely valuable resource because of her strength and Talents in the power. Particularly her Talent for Earth. Rand and his party arrive at Toman Head. We talk about the pronunciations of different cities and how we originally got most of them wrong. We bet you can relate. Captain Domon, is neither Damane, nor Domani, but they all have the same sound. Lots of these pronunciations are tricky, so we try to stick with the audio book versions. Rand is visited by Ishamael in his dreams – A dreamshard created by Ishmael that is. He tries channeling to get rid of the man that haunts his dreams. This is definitely a 'Stretching' moment – something we've talked about in lots of episodes. As a channeler learns and grows, the harder they push themselves, and the closer to their breaking point, the faster they reach their final, full potential. Egwene, Min, Nynaeve, Elayne, and Liandrin emerge from the Waygate at Toman Head. They're greeted by over fifty soldiers, including Sul'dam and Damane. A trap springs. Egwene's torture and training begins immediately, but so does Nynaeve's scheming. This trap was laid by Ishamael through Liandrin and Suroth. Nynaeve and Egwene are too important to Rand to be allowed to stay near him. We spend some time talking about the Seanchan, the history of the A'dam, and the development of warfare in general on Seanchan continent. Although the experience and training leaves Egwene scarred forever, she learns a great deal, and is a much more powerful and dangerous channeler afterward. Fire to form the iron that she will become. The Super Girls slip out of the tower to meet Liandrin at the Waygate. They pass easily through the halls, fetch their horses, then past the tower's guards, to one of the only #Ogier groves that is currently maintained. Liandrin is surprised that Egwene and Nynaeve brought Elayne and Min with them. That they're a larger group saves all their lives, though they don't know the danger yet. We talk about timing, Rand and the boys are flickering through many universes, and the ladies are in the ways, so typical time and distance mean little, but the events are lined up masterfully by #robertjordan We spend some time speculating on where Liandrin obtained her map of the ways. While Rand is flickering through hundreds of parallel universes, Egwene is studying in the White Tower. She's made friends with Elayne the daughter-heir of Andor, and Min the only Doomseer currently alive. Nynaeve is learning that her temper is connected her channeling, and that she's far more powerful than most living Aes Sedai when she's angry. Liandrin arrives under orders from Ishamael. She's to separate Nynaeve and Egwene from the Dragon Reborn. Ishamael and the Black Ajah understand that these women will be critical to facilitate the success of the light at the last battle. Without Nynaeve Saidin will remain tainted, without Egwene the White Tower will remain broken, not to mention the damage they ultimately do to the Black Ajah and the Forsaken. We talk about how we think the Portal Stones work, why they can't be moved to anywhere they're not supposed to be, and offer some head-canon on how we imagine the 'Lines of If' are connected and accessed. This next moment is a Major crux of the series. We see some of our first multiple futures, where the characters near the stone see what could happen should they make certain choices in their lives, hundreds or thousands of variables. Rand channels. Rand and Tam die on Winternight, because he never threw the tea kettle. Rand never leaves the Two Rivers, Egwene and Nynaeve manage to keep him alive to an old age. He was a soldier, he was a shepherd, he was a beggar, and a king, a farmer, gleeman, sailor, and a carpenter. He was born, lived, and died Aiel. He died mad, he died rotting, he died of sickness, accident, or age. Sometimes Moiraine comes for him, sometimes she does not. Sometimes other Aes Sedai came for him, sometimes the Red Ajah. Sometimes he marries Egwene, sometimes she kills or gentles him. But at the end of every life, a voice whispers in his ear. “I have won again, Lews Therin.” When the Party arrives on Toman Head 3-4 months later, they have all lived hundreds of lives, and now have this opportunity to learn from their future mistakes. The Eldest of Stedding Tsofu understands the great need our party has to use their Waygate, but the Ogier do not believe in acting with out consideration. Finding the Horn of Valere is a great need indeed, as is saving Mat's life, but Alar takes the time to explain to Verin, Rand, and Ingtar what could happen to them should the encounter the Black Wind. Erith gives Loial a flower, which we think we can confirm, he carries for the rest of the series, or at least until he is married. When the Party arrives at Tsofu's Waygate.  Machin Shin is already waiting there for Rand. After coming into contact with Padan Fain, Machin Shin is also now compelled to hunt Rand Al'Thor, and it will be for the rest of the series. Without access to the Ways, Rand's party quickly comes to the conclusion that another Portal Stone must be used. Luckily there is one nearby. Life is interesting with Ta'veren for friends. The party that fled Cairhien arrives at Stedding Tsofu. Ingtar continues to show signs of distress, likely an effect of Ishameal's compulsion during the Darkfriend Social. Loial is also reluctant to head toward the Stedding. He might be discovered and shipped back to his mother in Stedding Shangtai. We meet Erith, Loial's future wife for the first time. She mentions the Aiel and the Traveling people avoiding eachother. While Loial attracts the attention of the Lady Ogier, Rand attracts the attention of the Far Dareis Mai. Although, the Aiel women are disgusted by Rand when they realize he carries a sword. The Elders of Stedding Tsofu agree to meet with the Humans, and speak with them about using their Waygate. Remember that short conversation between Rand and Thom at Barthanes’ party? Galldrian sure did. He sent men to investigate Thom, who end up killing Dena. Thom kills them and Galldrian, Barthanes is assassinated mysteriously at the same time, it looks like the work of a Golem. Someone fired Galldrian's granaries as well, possibly Barthanes. This throws Cairhien into chaos, and civil war, sets Thom on a path to better protect Rand’s assets in the future, and opens up the East for eventual consolidation under the Dragon’s banner. Hurin tells us a bit about the gossip in the servant's quarters. We talk about Rand’s creeping insanity, how that increasingly affects him as time goes on, and we speculate on when it begins. Hurin leads Rand and Loial to the stone enclosure that hides the Waygate. When Rand opens the gate to see if Hurin’s Talent works within the Ways, Machin Shin is there waiting for them, whispering Rand’s name. We talk more about how the interaction between Padan Fain and the Black Wind changed both. The Black Wind tries to escape the ways to attack Rand, but he manages to hold it back with Saidin while Loial closes the Gate. The party leaves Barthanes’ Manor, shortly before he’s assassinated.
