Rand is navigating a new relationship with his honor guard, the Maidens of the Spear. It's mostly hilarious to watch Rand fumble around while trying to understand a complex exotic culture but one ex-Maiden, Aviendha, is giving him the hardest time of it. When Rand gave Aviendha the ivory bracelet, to thank her for being his advisor. The Maidens of the Spear believed it to be a courting gift, Aviendha is shamed by that assumption, knowing her true destiny with the Car'a'carn, and his relationship with her near-sister Elaine. She gives Rand a dragon belt buckle made of her own spears to 'settle the debt'. We learn so much about Aiel customs and culture in Fires of Heaven, and it's a delight on each re-read. Lews Therin's mind and thoughts are beginning to slip into Rand's. Why and how that works are a matter of debate in the fan community. Moiraine has collected a number of items of the power and had them loaded onto wagons, but she takes special interest in the precise placement red stone doorway. She already knows about her showdown with Lanfear. She knows how to take her out, and knows she needs everything placed perfectly. Her rising anxiety, noted by everyone in the next few chapters, is all explained when one realizes that she may not know WHEN only HOW she can remove the Daughter of the Night from the picture. Spoiler: She's right, it works, and she knows her chances of survival are next to nothing. As the Aiel clans assemble, we watch the Chiefs discuss the warriors who have run away rather than face the truth of their heritage. This phenomenon does not yet have a name. The Tairen High Lady Alteima, effectively exiled from her home by the political machinations of Thom Merrilin and Rand Al'thor, has arrived in Caemlyn hoping to find sanctuary in the Royal palace of Caemlyn, and protection from Queen Morgase. She is escorted through the palace grounds to meet with Queen Morgase by young Lieutenant Tallanvor, escorted right into the snake pit that Morgase has been trapped in. Of course, how could Lady Alteima have known that Rahvin, in disguise as Lord Gaebril, would take such a liking to her. “You're a viscous little cat, though pretty, perhaps pretty enough to keep with your teeth and claws drawn,” Rahvin says of her. Andor remains deep in the clutches of a Forsaken, though his control will be challenged soon.

We learn from Rahvin's inner monologue that although Morgase is under the influence of his compulsion, she is nearly impossible to fully control. Lanfear visit's Rahvin, she is the first to arrive of a meeting of four forsaken including Sammael and Graendal. While Graendal's gateway opens we peer through, and see a disconsolate Jain Farstrider. Four of the Chosen are Dead, and Asmodean had been taken by the Dragon as a teacher, leading these four members to meet and discuss a strategy. Lanfear has gathered together the strongest of the remaining Chosen and convinced them not to fight amongst themselves, but instead to focus on a cohesive strategy. Wheel of Time Spoilers 219 – TfoH – Prologue Part 1   The prologue of Fires of Heaven is long enough that we split it into two parts. Look out for part two this Friday evening. Elaida Sedai is now the Amyrlin seat. Watching her administrations in the prologue here are as painful as ever, and gets worse as time goes on. Although she is not a Friend of the Dark, half of her advisors ARE. Elaida is SURROUNDED by shadow, not to mention Fain who has only just arrived. Elaida is one of the few Aes Sedai that is willing to acknowledge Rand Al'Thor as the Dragon Reborn, and demonstrates in this scene that she is willing to use all powers at her diposal to bring him into the Tower's keeping. Rand and Asmodean race to Rhuidean, and proceed to smash half the city to smithereens in an effort to control the access key. From the rubble, an Aiel city will finally rise. Asmodean loses the battle soundly, and becomes Rand's reluctant teacher. Lanfear arrives to mock them, and Rand suddenly realizes he remembers her from the visions in the glass columns.
