What's Goa-n On with Indian Tourism?
It's been an eventful week in Goa after the State's Tourism Department filed a police complaint against a social media user who supposedly disseminated "false" statistics on the fall in rates of touristic activity in the southwestern coastal state. The X user cited a report by CEIC which claimed foreign tourist arrivals in Goa fell from 8.5 million in 2019 to 1.5 million in 2023, "thereby causing significant annoyance to local businesses and inducing fear or alarm within the local community.” While the Government of Goa vehemently disagrees with the statistic, this development has prompted an outpouring of discussion around the health and sustainability of the State's tourism sector, particularly in comparison to their Southeast Asian competitors. Join Anupam Manur and Kripa Koshy as they discuss factors that impede the growth of the tourism sector in Goa, what responsible tourism could look like in India and best practices that the State may be able to cherry pick from around the globe.
