What a way to end the first week of the new year. Today marks the second anniversary of the Trump-led attack on the capitol as insurrectionists attempted to overturn the results of a fair and free 2020 election. It's been a long, frustrating couple of years, usually with the public being kept in the dark about how the insurrectionist's prosecutions are going… with one major exception. [https://emptywheel.net/] She's been joining me regularly to keep us up to speed on all of the investigations and everything else happening in this shit show that some on the right are trying to undermine. So Marcy joins me for a great discussion on this, the second anniversary of the Jan 6 attack on the Capitol, and on the fourth day of stalemate in the House of Representatives, as Kevin McCarthy keeps getting humiliated in his quest to be speaker. But as I'm getting ready for today's show, they've just finished voting… for the 13th time. And for the 13th time, Kevin McCarthy still couldn't garner enough votes to win. It's the third day of a stalemate in the quest for the Republicans to elect a speaker... it's deja vu all over again for the third day in a row with no end in sight.  We'll bring you the high (low) lights of today's events before talking with Howie Klein of Down with Tyranny & the Blue America PAC about the insanity of it all...

A bit of what's news for now

It's Day 2 of voting for Speaker of the House. It's been 100 years since the majority party in the US House of Representatives were unable to reach consensus on a speaker on the first ballot. As I'm writing this preparing for today's show, they're on the second vote of the day... after three failed votes yesterday.  And at this point, it appears that the fifth vote count won't be significantly different than the first four. The question is how low can McCarthy sink? It's obvious he knows no shame, but this is embarrassing. With each subsequent vote, Kevin shrinks further into the abyss of no return.  As I continue preparing for today's show, I see that McCarthy now has no chance of winning in the fifth round of voting, so they move move to a sixth round next. Or not...

Today marks the start of the 118th Congress, if only they could elect a  speaker!  At the time of this writing, the second round of voting is still in  progress, though the outcome is already known. With probably another  hour of voting to go, there are already 13 Republican votes against  McCarthy, and he could only afford to lose four.  So much for getting on with the people's business! Today, we'll talk about all that's going on as we're watching an  historical yet somewhat hysterical day unfold.  Also today, here in Floriduh, the sorry excuse for a governor was sworn  in today for his second term of destroying the state. I feel that it's  my mission to tell the rest of the country what Ron DeSantis is.
