Why You DON'T Need to Wait 3-5 Days Between New Foods with Carina Venter, PhD, RD
#84: Have you heard the recommendation to wait 3-5 days between trying new foods with your baby? Did you know that there is no evidence or research to back this guidance up? In fact, waiting unnecessarily long periods of time between new foods all but ensures that babies WON’T get the diet diversity that other research shows they really NEED to succeed with growth and development.Introducing 1 new food per day is perfectly safe for your baby. Carina Venter, PhD, RD is joining me on this interview to tell you why you do NOT need to wait 3-5 days between new foods for your baby. And if that’s the recommendation you’re hearing from your pediatrician, Carina also breaks down why doctors are still perpetuating this outdated notion despite the emerging body of literature that supports more rapid exposure to new foods. Carina Venter is one of the most recognized authorities in the area of pediatric food allergy prevention and research. She’s on many of the nutrition advisory panels that study the evidence about starting solids and put forth recommendations for new food and allergenic food introduction. If you’re not already convinced that babies can eat a greater variety of foods than most doctors would give them credit for, this interview with Carina Venter is going to make a believer out of you too!Listen to this episode to learn:
The racist connotations of the term “food desert” and why “food apartheid” is a preferable alternative
How parents can challenge the rhetoric of nutrition and food that needs to look or be a certain way in order to be “normal” or “healthy”
The “why” behind her book Black Food Matters: Racial Justice in the Wake of Food Justice and what it means for parents today

Family Meals: When Should My Baby Start Eating with the Family?
#83: Does baby-led weaning mean you feed your baby the same foods the rest of the family eats? Are you supposed to eat every meal together with your baby? Do you bring the baby to the table or are they in the high chair and how long should a feeding even last? You probably KNOW that family meals are beneficial - and that babies can start eating with the family from their first bites...but the actual LOGISTICS of how you make this happen can be a little tricky. In this episode I’m walking you through 5 main considerations about having your baby at family meals for baby-led weaning. We’re covering the WHERE, WHAT, WHEN, WHO and WHY about family meals for early eaters and how you can make them happen at your house without losing your mind or having to short-order cook for your baby!Listen to this episode to learn:
WHERE?: Where’s the safest space to feed your baby? And how come my fancy high chair didn’t come with a tray? What if I have a bar or counter height table, how does the high chair work then?
WHAT?: Do babies eat the same foods you eat? How do you modify foods safely so babies can enjoy parts of the family meal even early on in BLW?
WHEN?: When are babies eating with us? Is it every meal? How long should a feeding be? How often do we feed them?
WHO: Who should be around when the baby is eating? Why is my baby staring at me during mealtimes and what does that mean?
WHY?: Why are we even worried about whether or not babies are eating with us? The benefits of family meals extend way beyond diet diversity and nutrition quality. Check out this episode for the exact steps on how to get your baby to eat with your family!

Black Food Matters and Food Justice with Hanna Garth, MPH, PHD
#82: It’s no secret that food and nutrition is traditionally taught through a white-centric lens. 5 Things NOT to Buy When Starting Baby-Led Weaning
#81: You do not need to buy a bunch of STUFF to give your baby a safe start to solid foods! There are so many items and gadgets and doo-dads for sale, it can be confusing to try to figure out what you actually need! In this episode we’re going to narrow it down to what you actually might need for starting solids by going through a list of things you definitely do NOT need. Baby feeding gear can get downright gimmicky, and some of the stuff you see for sale can actually even be harmful. If you’re just getting started with solid foods and baby-led weaning, here's a quick rundown of 5 things you do NOT need to buy to get a safe start to solid foods!Listen to this episode to learn:
MESH TEETHER BAGS - also called feeding bags, these are not only unnecessary but they can actually be dangerous when feeding babies. Inside the episode I’m sharing a personal story with a mesh teether that will make you think twice if you’re considering using these for starting solids with your baby.
BABY FOOD MAKERS - if you have a pot with a lid and a source of potable water, you essentially can do what the fanciest top-of-the-line baby food maker does: steams food. Then if you have a fork, you can mash that steamed food. So save your money and some counter space and bypass the baby-food maker.
LONG HANDLED SPOON - most baby spoons are designed for parents to spoon-feed a baby. I’m sharing my favorite alternative, a baby-led weaning spoon that was designed with your baby’s feeding milestones and self-feeding abilities and has a short, fat, round handle.
HIGH CHAIRS WITHOUT FOOTRESTS - having your baby’s feet resting flat on a solid surface is imperative for facilitating a safe swallow. I’m sharing 2 high chairs with adjustable footrests that I use and recommend as well as some ideas for DIY hacks to make your current unsafe high chair safer and adding an “after-market” footrest.
BABY-SPECIFIC FOODS - whether it’s baby oatmeal or baby yogurt, the reality is you do not need to buy baby-specific foods. Your baby can safely eat modified versions of “adult” foods and I’m sharing a few tips for making this happen so you can bypass the entire baby food aisle!
