LWLS x Jas Talks Law: 5% of Lawyers are Black

On this week's episode, the ladies talk to Jasmin Robinson, a Future Lawyer Activist, Coach,  Writer, Consultant & Entrepreneurship Attorney. She is the creator of the brand - 5% of lawyers are black — and she does everything In her power to help increase that! Jas has helped and raised over 2.2 million in scholarship to help get future lawyers to law school!! Jas went to Mercer Law School and she talks about why she chose to go there! She uses a good line in reference her experience with to the other law schools she didn’t get into, “rejection is redirection” we all have to remember that one! Jas shared her accomplishments: graduating with honors, she made the deans list 1st and last semester of law school! She also shares her struggles: learning discipline- this level of studying and discipline needed to be successful in law school! cue Ciara’s Level Up! In true Jas fashion, she worked her booty off in law school. She did 5-6 different internship while in law school, including  at U.S. Department of Education in the Civil Rights Department. Jas shares her Bar Prep experience with us, she was a Barbri rep. and that helped keep her accountable. Then listen to what happened 2 weeks before she took the bar. She also talks about the *Barbri tracker* -- don’t let it get you down, keep up the hard work and KEEP LEARNING from your mistakes! While waiting for her results she worked as a recruiter at Mercer then after she found out she passed she started at a family law firm, but realized litigation wasn't for her. So she focused on Jas Talks Law, listen to find out the rest of her story!Birth of Jas Talks Law — thanks to Mercer, she was a 2L, and was asked by the school to go back to Hampton and recruit! She did a law fair event but of course she wanted to do a little more then just the fair. So she had an event and named it “Jas Talks Law” — 6 years later she has made this brand into her own law firm! She wrote a personal statement work book, to help everyone in any financial situation!  Jas shares her experience with racism and the reason behind *5% of lawyers are black* brand — she talks about the “beautiful struggle” — Jas talks about how AWARENESS is what is really wants — she considers this as her contribution to the movement! LWLS x How To Be Broke in New York: Manifesting Your Dream Law Career

On this week's episode, the ladies talk to Julianne Simson of How to be Broke in New York. Julianne got her under-grad degree and masters from Florida State University and was entrenched in the political scene of Florida, and she thought "Hey I wanna do this in NY!" So she lined up a job on the 2016 Clinton Campaign. However,  when she moved to NY, Brooklyn area, her job fell through. Julianne had saved up some money to get her buy, but after about two months she started to feel really down! In the spirit of ~pivoting~ she made it her mission to find enjoy her new home even if it was on a budget so she discovered all the *free* things to do in New York City, que her Instagram page. She talks about how her LSAT experience was horrible, but man you guys she was DRIVEN and with all that hard work she got into Cardozo School of Law and is currently a rising 3L, like The Ladies!! Julianne shares her experience when she told her law school about her instagram page, and how proud the dean was of her entrepreneurial skills! She talks about the differences between pre-covid law school vs. online law school, and how it effected her. Julianne shares about working at the Attorney General's office in the Labor bureau, and shares the TEA about her current summer plans. Why did she decide to go to law school? Well, she loves school and always knew she wanted to go back for a masters degree of sorts, plus she loves reading and writing! Molly talks about how she grew up poor and the only way she was going to law school was with a full ride. And of course she ended up getting a “Woodrow Scholarship” and was able to attend Emory Law!! While in law school she loved participating in clubs and being a student leader! She had pressure to go to big law, or maybe try patent law. However, after participating in the GA innocence clinic, Molly knew she wanted to be a public defender. And the rest is history! She says being in court is what really solidified her feelings! Now as a solo practitioner she has found her happy place where her independence reigns free! Before law school Danney worked for 5 years as a paralegal. And before that she attended  Florida international University where she majored in political science.  While working she knew she didn’t like personal injury, but fell in love with criminal defense law.  After quitting her job, she took 6 months to study for the LSAT and applied to New York Law School! She tells the ladies how she made a lot of friends her 1st year, but sadly lost her scholarship at the end of it. So when it came to 2nd year, she knew she had to make some changes! After developing better time management skills she saw a huge improvement in her grades. Her story doesn’t stop there! After graduation, like many other students, she began to study for the bar. But she didn’t study the way she needed and ended up not passing the 1st time. As she studied for the 2nd time with a coaching company - Vinco Prep, she started to notice something wasn’t quite right. After going to the doctor she found out she had a stomach ulcer. She continued to study and even though she didn’t pass she was proud of a *HUGE* jump in her score. Then 3rd time studying and cue the pandemic. Her mom and brother got covid in the middle of her studying and it all hit Danney really hard! BUTTTT Danney passed the bar in a pandemic and is now an Attorney! She talks about how she was hesitant to work in immigration law because of her past and the emotions it brought back. She attended University of San Diego school of law because she got the best scholarship. Kelly applied to over 15 law schools and ended up with a full ride for 1st year! While she interned in law school she said she did lots of learning. Like at the PD & DA offices, she decided NO criminal law. Kelly finished in law school 2.5 years, and passed the bar the 1st time, at just 23 years old!   Kelly got into family law in law school with the domestic violence clinic. After passing the bar, she worked at multiple law firms in the San Fransisco area in insurance defense, for 5 years. However, she found herself always doing pro bono hours in family law, and needing independence in her schedule, so she decided it was time to start her own firm, at 30 years old! Tips Owning your firm: Have an online presence (make a good website and get the word out) ; also, Volunteer  / TV exposure / Get know in your community ; and get to know lawyers and judges on the bench.
