Changing the Maternal Health Conversation

Tovah Haim is a self-described private person. So, why would she choose to launch a business centered around the truthful realities of birth, pregnancy recovery, and breastfeeding? “The thing that helps me is my conviction in needing change,” she says. “I believe with all my heart that it’s not okay that we exist in this environment.” Bodily’s mission is to change the way mothers and families experience the transition to new parenthood. Because there hasn’t been an honest conversation about mothers’ experiences, they aren’t getting the support they need; Most significantly, maternity leave and the community and resources to heal. We discuss the importance of destigmatizing women’s health, the different phases of impacting cultural change, and why this conversation is vital to create a more equitable and supportive experience for mothers. While this vulnerability may push Tovah out of her comfort zone, following her heart is the throughline of her journey. We delve into how she cultivates the courage to take risks and redirect her path to prioritize meaning and fulfillment. “As soon as I feel unhappy for a stretch, I wake up and decide something’s gotta change,” she adds. “Happiness is what this is all about.”

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor on Cultivating Peace of Mind

“When your heart says one thing and your head says another, it is simply a dispute between the different parts of your brain.”Twenty-five years ago, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor had a traumatic brain hemorrhage that caused her to lose the functioning of her left hemisphere. Simultaneous to losing her ability to walk, talk, and remember the details of her life, she lived in the blissful state of peace and presence that we access in our right hemisphere. She chronicled her eight year recovery in her bestseller, My Stroke of Insight, and TED talk, which was the first ever to go viral. Soon after, she received over 300,000 letters asking the same pressing question: How can I find that deep inner peace? Her response is her game-changing new book, Whole Brain Living, which explains how intentionally linking the thinking and emotional parts of our brain - that she refers to as our Four Characters - gives us the agency to choose how we feel, think, behave, and live. We break down the role each character plays in our life, how to bring them together as a team, and implement her highly effective strategies to maintain a state of equilibrium. Dr.Bolte Taylor believes that “peace is just a thought away.” Her work illuminates the path there.
