Fatherhood in 40-Minute Snapshots with Jeremy Schneider

Dr. Dan interviews Jeremy G. Schneider, MFT today about his new book FATHERHOOD IN 40-MINUTE SNAPSHOTS (https://www.jgs.net/). Dr. Dan and Jeremy discuss the importance of Dads in their children’s lives as well as topics including: Being present Being an engaged parent but also balancing work, life as a dad How to be role model How to help children feel supported and also challenged How to guide, facilitate and help our children find their own path in life How to connect with child - keep trying! The show ends with a touching Parent Footprint moment about one of the author’s two-year-old twins -- and inspiration to get up fifteen minutes earlier! Jeremy G. Schneider was born in Philadelphia and currently lives in New York. He has been with his wife for more than 25 years and they have twin boy/girl teenagers in high school.  Watch this free video to learn more about Dr. Dan and Parent Footprint Awareness Training®. With Understanding Comes Calm, with Julie Skolnick

Dr. Dan welcomes colleague and friend Julie F. Skolnick, M.A., J.D. to today’s show. Julie is the founder of With Understanding Comes Calm, LLC a community for gifted/2e families, children, adults, and educators. (www.WithUnderstandingComesCalm.com). In today’s episode, Dr.Dan and Julie focus on Julie’s work with gifted, twice-exceptional and much more.  Julie’s touching opening story about her own children and her parenting journey (and later her very honest and real Parent Footprint moment) will resonate with parents.  As the founder of With Understanding Comes Calm, Julie Skolnick passionately guides parents of gifted and distractible children, mentors 2e adults, and collaborates with and advises educators and professionals on bringing out the best and raising self-esteem in their students and clients. A frequent speaker and prolific writer, Julie is also the mother of three twice exceptional children who keep her on her toes and laughing. During today’s show, Julie describes her process to Dr. Dan which includes three parts and a “cycle for success” as well as her P.R.A.I.S.E. method. Here is more information, in her own words from the interview and her website--  Understanding With understanding comes calm. Through the lenses of giftedness and distractibility, I will help you understand your child’s perplexing behaviors, complicated feelings and challenging attitudes and the responses of others toward them... When we understand why our children feel what they feel we can respond to their behavior in a calm and productive way.  Strategies Once we understand why your child reacts, behaves and feels the way he does, we can calmly create strategies to redirect or diffuse his behavior and help bring out the best in him so he may successfully reach his potential. We will fill your toolbox with ways to avoid negative reactions, encourage responsibility, and increase your child’s self-awareness and self esteem.  Implement/Advocate How will these strategies actually happen at home, in the classroom and out in the world? The success of implementation is planning ahead. Along with an implementation plan, we advise parents on how to advocate with necessary professionals: teachers, administrators, coaches and others so parents create a mutually supportive team without creating a defensive atmosphere. The goal is to form a partnership where parents and professionals gain mutual benefits from sharing information, techniques, and have a respectful back and forth about the best way to help your child thrive.  Julie serves as Secretary on the Maryland Superintendent’s Gifted and Talented Advisory Council and is on the Advisory Council for “The G Word” movie. Julie is the SENG (Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted) Maryland liaison, a SENG Model Parent Group (SMPG) trained facilitator and on the Simultaneous Supports committee for the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC). Debbie Reber is the founder of TiLT Parenting and host of the TiLT Parenting Podcast, which she created to support parents raising “differently-wired” kids and shift the conversation around how neurodiversity (everything from ADHD and dyslexia to Aspergers and giftedness) is perceived and experienced in the world.  Parenting is a journey filled with twists and turns. Debbie shares her personal story about raising a special needs child and how she had to learn to become present, get rid of “the shoulds” and embrace imperfection. The Yes Brain: How To Cultivate Courage, Curiosity, and Resilience In Your Child with Dr. Tina Payne Bryson

Dr. Dan welcomes back one of the podcast’s most popular guests -- bestselling author and parenting expert Dr. Tina Payne Bryson (http://www.tinabryson.com/) to discuss her new book The Yes Brain and her pioneering work in area of brain-based parenting. Dr. Tina Bryson is also the co-author (with Dr. Daniel Siegel) of two New York Times bestsellers (The Whole Brain Child and No Drama Discipline) and is Executive Director of the The Center for Connection in Pasadena (http://www.thecenterforconnection.org/ ).  How can parents cultivate resilience? What is a Yes Brain? What is a No Brain? What is success? How does the pressure of the need for success affect our children today? Today Dr. Dan and Dr. Tina talk about her new book and the topic of basic brain science -- that is how a child’s brain is either receptive or reactive (affecting their regulation) and what we need to do as parents and educators to support that child’s brain state. Ultimately parents and educators and caregivers want to move our kids from reactivity (The No Brain/Red Zone) to receptivity (The Yes Brain/Green Zone). The good news? Our kids can be taught to approach life with openness and curiosity. When kids work from a Yes Brain, they’re more willing to take chances and explore. They’re more curious and imaginative. They’re better at relationships and handling adversity. And we can make this a reality! Dr. Dan explores the four fundamentals of the Yes Brain—balance, resilience, insight, and empathy—with Dr. Tina and how they can be fostered and strengthened in all of our children and students. How? By exploring the mind behind the behaviors in children instead of just focusing on the behavior. Dr. Dan and Dr. Tina offer listeners concrete examples of ways we can intentionally help our children achieve a state of balance -- by deliberate and thoughtful behavior modeling, positive parenting, and supportive disciplining.  Dr. Dan wraps up this episode by asking his favorite guest question -- What is Tina’s Parent Footprint Moment?  Her lesson about being present and intentionally in the moment is one she continues to revisit on her own parenting journey decades later.  Today episode is sure to be a new favorite for all Parent Footprint podcast listeners. Generosity with Judy Hoberman

Dr. Dan welcomes author-expert-TedX speaker-gender expert-radio host-entrepreneur and parent Judy Hoberman to today’s show to talk about Generosity - what it is, how to spread it, and why when you give your time to others in your work life and home life you become an ambassador for good living. More about Judy:  www.walkingontheglassfloor.com  Judy’s passion for mentoring and paying it forward started when she found she was one of the only women working in insurance among a sea of male coworkers.  She wanted her work in sales to give back in a meaningful way and this transformed her life. Judy defines Generosity as this: learning how to help others in big and small ways by giving your time to others. This intention became her work’s mission: in 2007 she committed to helping one woman every single day and now she has founded the Walking on the Glass Floor Foundation to help young women in business by partnering with businesses and offering scholarships and resources. In addition to speaking engagements as a gender expert, Judy Hoberman also lectures about how her list of seven essential leadership and work skills can have a positive impact on our personal lives and family -- especially when we model kindness as we are raising our children.  The core advice Judy talks to Dr. Dan about today is this: be a positive role model and lead by example -- be good regardless of who is watching. (Of course this philosophy is also part of the Parent Footprint mission.)  Today's discussion also tackles topics of time, work-life balance, and resilience. Judy wraps up the show with a heartfelt discussion about her TedX talk (www.sellinginaskirt.com) on pre-judging others and a surprising Parent Footprint moment about her journey as a single Mom. When you give your time and yourself to others it shapes you and in turn lets you live life as a good and kind person. Dr. Dan and Judy’s lively conversation will inspire listeners to do more, be better, and give generously. Watch this free video to learn more about Dr. Dan and Parent Footprint Awareness Training®. Building Resilience in Children and Teens with Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg

In today’s much-anticipated show, Dr. Dan talks about Resilience with the incredible Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg (http://www.fosteringresilience.com/index_parents.php  and http://www.chop.edu/doctors/ginsburg-kenneth-r  and www.parentandteen.org ), a professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, practicing doctor of adolescent medicine at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and author of several books including "Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings," "Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love with Expectations and Protection with Trust," "Letting Go with Love and Confidence" and proud father. Dr. Dan and Dr. Ginsburg’s discussion is a must-listen-to for all parents and listeners will learn a lot from Dr. Ginsburg’s medical career and work with children, his passions (including being a Dad), and the third edition of his best selling book Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings. The show starts with this powerful definition: “Resilienceis the capacity to rise above difficult circumstances, allowing our children to exist in this less-than-perfect world, while moving forward with optimism and confidence.” After defining resilience, Dr. Ken explains in his passionate and compelling way how parents (and other loving adults in a child’s life) are the guides and the keys to building the foundation of success for all children. In addition he reveals that the real definition of love, in his opinion, is seeing/accepting a person as who he or she is just as they are which in turn helps them see themselves.   Dr. Dan and Dr. Ken dispel many unhealthy myths about parenting including that teens don’t care what their parents think about them or that teens just don’t care about anything. What listeners learn is that parents are EVERYTHING -- especially to their adolescents. Later, they discuss when and how parents need to move away from parenting their children and how important it is to just listen.   Finally the show wraps up with a discussion of the essential “tools” our children need to navigate life and Dr. Ken’s very personal Parent Footprint moment. Today’s show will be a revelation for all parents and caregivers. Read more about Dr. Ginsberg below and here http://www.fosteringresilience.com/about.php Dr. Ginsburg is a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He also serves Philadelphia’s homeless youth as Director of Health Services at Covenant House Pennsylvania. The theme that ties together his clinical practice, teaching, research and advocacy efforts is that of building on the strength of teenagers by fostering their internal resilience. His goal is to translate the best of what is known from research and practice into practical approaches parents, professionals and communities can use to prepare children and teens to thrive. To advocate for parents’ critical role in raising resilient children and teens, he has appeared on CNN, NPR, The Today Show, Good Morning America, The CBS morning show, FOX and Friends and ABC, NBC, and CBS Nightly News programs. Dr. Ginsburg lectures widely to national and international parent and professional audiences. His most recent books are, "Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings," and “Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love with Expectations and Protection with Trust”, both published by The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) as well as “Letting Go with Love and Confidence,” published by Avery, Penguin Press. He has been humbled to work on behalf of those who serve our nation with The Military Child Education Coalition to prepare military parents, health professionals, counselors, and teachers to incorporate stress reduction and resilience building strategies for the nation’s nearly 2 million military-affiliated children.
