The Boy Crisis (and what parents can do about it) with Deb Blum
Dr. Dan welcomes life/parent coach and expert (and mom to two boys) Deb Blum to the podcast today for a meaningful conversation about the "Boy Crisis" and raising healthy boys.
Deb lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and their 15 and 17 year old boys. She’s been a management & technology consultant for over 25 years. Ten years ago, Deb found herself at a personal crisis point – suffering the consequences of unhealed trauma, completely disconnected from herself, on the brink of divorce – bitter, blaming and hopeless. Deb learned that to be a good leader, parent and partner – she needed to show up for herself first which is aligned with the Parent Footprint mission and eventually led to her life’s work.
After reading the book The Boy Crisis, Deb’s life changed dramatically and drastically as she learned that it's a myth that boys and men are doing fine. In fact, she discovered that all humans are facing an impending epic catastrophe if our boys continue to struggle and then grow into men who aren't engaged and positively contributing to our society. Deb passionately tells Dr. Dan that this is not a zero sum game -- she believes we're all in this together and when any group isn't doing well, it impacts everyone.
Dr. Dan and Deb agree that our boys need us and discuss provocative topics in today’s podcast including --
What are some of the ways that boys are in crisis?
Three ways parents/moms can help boys
Why boys need dads and positive male role models
Why it is time to wake up and listen and why they need help in all areas: schools, relationships, families, the media - even the government!
How to have a real relationship with your son
Deb’s compelling Parent Footprint moment and what it can teach every parent
In addition to her coaching and consulting work, Deb Blum is the co-founder of a large local parent community, Redwood Parents Connect; the founder of the Center for the Well-being of Boys; and a strategic advisor for the Marin County Restorative Youth Court. She is also the official moderator Dr. Warren Farrell’s Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/boycrisisforum/ (Dr. Warren Farrell is the author of The Boy Crisis and one of the original advocates for boys and men). Finally, Deb Blum is part of the coalition to create a White House Council for Boys and Men: http://whitehouseboysmen.org/

Parenting To Your Child’s Temperament + Inner Drive with Wendy Gossett
Dr. Dan welcomes Wendy Gossett, M. Ed. (an author, Temperament Specialist and Founder of Temperament Coaching) to today’s show to discuss temperament and parenting.
Wendy is a child temperament specialist who helps parents learn how to “see” their kids, not through their own biased lens, but through the lens of their child’s natural temperament. Wendy starts off the show discussing her own parenting journey and how her own daughter inspired her life’s work.
Wendy Gossett’s Child Temperament test will help parents everywhere to understand their child or children (and her adult test will help parents understand themselves).
Her work with parents shows parents how to uncover their "true type” so they can be self-aware and differentiate their strengths from their kids. Many times parents have unrealistic expectations that come from their own temperament biases.
Today’s show tackles many topics including:
How Wendy started using temperament psychology with families
(Hint: she was a corporate trainer using Myers Briggs, Keirsey and Carl Jung.)
What is temperament exactly?
Is temperament determined by nature or nurture?
How early can a parent tell a child’s temperament?
Wendy’s viral video and why you should watch it today!
And more including Wendy’s Parent Footprint Moment.
Wendy Gossett, MA, is a Parenting and Relationship Specialist based in Denver, Colorado. She has worked with countless parents helping them to understand their children better by using temperament psychology. EEG maps in Neuroscience validate temperament as a tool for comprehending the eight psychological functions of the brain, which help people see and understand each other from the inside out. She has also worked with many Fortune 500 companies as a trainer and facilitator. In addition to her expertise in the field of temperament psychology, Wendy has a master’s degree with over twenty years of experience in all areas of training including parenting her own daughter who is her complete opposite. She is a contributing writer for Denver Parent and Mile High Mamas and for the past decade, she has been compiling all her acquired knowledge and experience with families into a comprehensive parenting textbook YOUR CHILD’S INNER DRIVE to help parents have a “User Manual” for their children, which will be published soon. Clutter-free Parenting with Laura Carlin
Dr. Dan is very excited to welcome Laura Carlin to the Parent Footprint podcast today. Laura is the author of the new book CLUTTER-FREE PARENTING: MAKING SPACE IN YOUR HOME FOR THE MAGIC OF CHILDHOOD AND THE JOY OF PARENTHOOD and she inspired parents and families everywhere.
Laura Carlin talks to Dr. Dan about the role that clearing clutter can play in parenting and in our children's lives. Laura explains her own childhood love of clutter-clearing and how clearing clutter can help raise confident, compassionate children who have the space to discover their passions, learn, grow, and have fun--undistracted by an endless stream of "things" they don't need and really don't want.
Today’s show will help parents get a jumpstart on spring cleaning while also bringing more love and joy into their homes right now. Laura tells Dr. Dan to start by asking “Is your home working for you or against you?” and this starting point will easily guide families. Laura shares a great lesson about how her own sister (and co-author of the book) cleared her tupperware drawer and it instantly increased her daily joy and her ability to be present.
The Clutter-Free parenting method teaches moms and dads everywhere how to:
-Regain time and energy in their day
-Create a home filled only with things they love or use
-Inspire children to be collaborators in a clutter-free home
-Prevent clutter from accumulating in the first place
-Use clutter-clearing to be more mindful and present
Laura’s advice is truly life-changing: if you own anything that is not loved or not useful then it should not be in your home! And how you clear clutter is as important as what you clear! Dr. Dan encourages listeners to start decluttering today to achieve immediate clarity and peace.
The interview ends with Laura’s Parent Footprint Moment about authenticity and it is a great example of how everything starts with parents.
Author Laura Carlin is a Simplicity Parenting coach and has inspired hundreds of people to transform their homes and lives through her workshops and lifestyle brand, InspiredEverydayLiving.com. Laura received a Master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica, and her Bachelor of Science in Communications from Northwestern University. She also graduated from the Western School of Feng Shui™ and lives with her husband and two sons.
