Learning to Critique & Celebrate Foreign Cultures with George Oliveira

When we cross cultural borders to serve others, it is essential for us to learn when to celebrate cultural diversity and when to critique it. This can be tricky! We may instinctively seek to align everything to our cultural norms–but doing so can dangerously lead to the erasure of beautifully unique and diverse elements of foreign culture that bring glory to God. At the same time, there are things within every culture that should be rightly critiqued. Long-time DNA friend, Pastor George Oliveira shares lessons learned as a cross-cultural pastor. He emphasizes the importance of transcending cultural divides with Christian love. He gives us a vision to authentically connect with diverse communities while celebrating our shared humanity under the teachings of Jesus.View the transcript, leave comments, and check out recommended resources on the Episode Landing Page!Disciple Nations Alliance Website

The Gospel Has No Significance for Society

Christian nationalism was recently denounced by John MacArthur as a faulty viewpoint. MacArthur indicates that things will get continually worse on Earth. Unfortunately, this view cultivates apathy and even discourages cultural influence. In contrast to this view, Christ teaches us to pray: “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” If things will only get worse, then what was the justification for the profoundly positive influence of Christian leaders like William Wilberforce? And why should we, as Christians, work to eradicate slavery, human trafficking, and abortion? While we have tremendous respect for John MacArthur, in this episode, we want to take issue with a few of his recent statements. Yes, we might lose down here, but we also might win occasionally. That’s not really for us to decide. In the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” Wherever God has placed you, whether in a family, school, political office, or bakery, you are called to faithfully represent Christ and His Kingdom in everything you do, no matter the outcome. It’s time for a faith that is active, not passive, in the face of challenges.View the transcript, leave comments, and check out recommended resources on the Episode Landing PageDisciple Nations Alliance Website

Words Worth Rejecting or Redeeming with Dr. Elizabeth Youmans

Words are constantly created and redefined in our day. With such dramatic shifts, how can we have the “mind of Christ?” Words are not just sounds we utter; they are powerful building blocks for culture. Words and their meanings shape our thinking, convictions, beliefs, and worldview – ultimately bringing about our actions. Which words need to be redeemed? Are there words that need to be rejected? Today we are joined by author, teacher, education consultant, trainer, speaker, and our good friend, Dr. Elizabeth Youmans, who helps us think deeply about this while helping us consider specific words like, gender, marriage, liberty and more.View the transcript, leave comments, and check out recommended resources on the Episode Landing Page!Disciple Nations Alliance Website

What’s the Harm of IVF? With Katy Faust

The Alabama Supreme Court recently ruled that frozen embryos created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) are children. This case caused many to realize how little they know about IVF and the principles that drive the practice. Christians feel confused because their instinct is to celebrate anything that has to do with children and life. We will talk about the deeper worldview principles underneath the surface. Did you know that the “baby-making industry” kills more fertilized embryos than the baby-destroying industry each year in the United States? That's right, the IVF industry kills more babies than abortion does. Guest Katie Faust, sentinel of children's rights and president of Them Before Us, helps us tackle the complexities of how society's adult-centric desires impact voiceless children. She reminds us to put children's rights at the forefront of our cultural conversations. We will also ask if there is an ethical way for believers to participate in IVF.View the transcript, leave comments, and check out recommended resources on the Episode Landing Page!Disciple Nations Alliance Website

Easter Part 2: Representatives in a Foreign Land

How does Easter's message interweave our daily lives? Jesus' reign is not confined to some spiritual reality. His kingship radically transforms every aspect of our existence. From personal identity to societal influence, we peel back layers of cultural misconceptions to expose a truth that emboldens us to live fearlessly within the victory of the resurrection. We take time to especially consider the significance of words and definitions and how these can influence society to understand truth or believe lies. We live in a word-based universe. Words aren't just sounds we utter; they are the very fabric of creation. A biblical worldview brings clarity to terms that our culture wrestles with. As we reflect on the power of language, we are reminded of a call to action from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, to revolt against the lies that threaten the flourishing of our world. As ambassadors of Christ, we recognize our role to represent Him in every area and in every way to a seemingly foreign world, through servant leadership and rooted in truth. Celebrate with us the triumph of the resurrection and Christ's ongoing work, recognizing our part in the grand narrative that is far from over.View the transcript, leave comments, and check out recommended resources on the Episode Landing Page!Disciple Nations Alliance Website

Easter Part 1: The Continuing Work of Christ

The Hebrew people in the Old Testament anticipated a Messiah that would be a priest and a King, radically changing every area of our worldly experience, and restoring it to God’s original intentions. Welcome to a two-part Easter series as we look at the practical impact that Christ's death and resurrection has on each of our lives. When Jesus came, He never intended for us to keep our faith relegated to attending church and being privately spiritual. The same power that rose Jesus from the grave lives in us, and gives us power and purpose to continue His work in the world. Jesus says He is with us always and that He has all authority in heaven and on earth. He also calls us to make disciples, teaching them to obey everything He has commanded. This is an all-encompassing call, given by an omnipotent God. Where is He calling you to partner more fully with His ongoing work in the world?View the transcript, leave comments, and check out recommended resources on the Episode Landing Page!Disciple Nations Alliance Website
