More Christ: Episode Sixty One: Dr Hugh Ross: Astrophysics, Asperger's, Asking Big Questions and Discovering the God of the Bible

Welcome to More Christ, where we seek to bring some of the world's most interesting and insightful guests to discuss life's central and abiding questions. In this sixty first episode in a series of discussions, I'm joined by the delightful Dr Hugh Ross.   Astrophysicist Hugh Ross is the founder and president of Reasons to Believe (RTB), an organization dedicated to demonstrating the compatibility of science and the Christian faith.  Intrigued by astronomy from childhood, Ross became the youngest-ever director of observations for Vancouver’s Royal Astronomical Society at age 16. He completed his BSc in physics at the University of British Columbia and MS and PhD in astronomy at the University of Toronto. For postdoctoral studies, the National Research Council of Canada sent him to the California Institute of Technology, where he researched galaxies and quasars. In 2012, Ross, together with Dr Gerald Schroeder, received the Ide P. Trotter Prize presented by Texas A&M University in recognition of his work in demonstrating connections between science and religion.  While leading RTB and keeping a close eye on the scientific literature, Ross also remains on the pastoral team at Christ Church Sierra Madre. His writings include journal and magazine articles and numerous books—Weathering Climate Change, The Creator and the Cosmos, and Improbable Planet, among others. He has spoken on hundreds of university campuses as well as at conferences and churches around the world.  Ross lives in Southern California with his wife, Kathy.

In this fifty eighth episode in a series of discussions, I'm joined by Dr Os Guinness. Os Guinness is an author and social critic. Great-great-great grandson of Arthur Guinness, the Dublin brewer, he was born in China in World War Two where his parents were medical missionaries. A witness to the climax of the Chinese revolution in 1949, he was expelled with many other foreigners in 1951 and returned to Europe where he was educated in England. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of London and his D.Phil in the social sciences from Oriel College, Oxford. Os has written or edited more than thirty books, including The Call, Time for Truth, Unspeakable, A Free People’s Suicide, The Global Public Square, Last Call for Liberty, and Carpe Diem Redeemed. His latest book, The Magna Carta of Humanity: Sinai's Revolutionary Faith and the Future of Freedom, was published in 2018. Since moving to the United States in 1984, Os has been a Guest Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Studies, a Guest Scholar and Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Senior Fellow at the Trinity Forum and the EastWest Institute in New York. He was the lead drafter of the Williamsburg Charter in 1988, a celebration of the bicentennial of the US Constitution, and later of “The Global Charter of Conscience,” which was published at the European Union Parliament in 2012. Os has spoken at many of the world’s major universities, and spoken widely to political and business conferences across the world. Greg founded Stand to Reason in 1993 and currently serves as President of Stand to Reason. He has spoken on more than 70 college and university campuses both in the U.S. and abroad and has hosted his own call-in radio show for 27 years, advocating for “Christianity worth thinking about.” He has debated atheist Michael Shermer on national radio and Deepak Chopra on national television. An award-winning writer and best-selling author, Greg has written seven books, including The Story of Reality—How the World Began, How It Ends, and Everything Important that Happens in Between; Tactics—A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions, and Relativism: Feet Firmly Planted in Mid-Air. Greg has been featured on Focus on the Family radio and has been interviewed for CBN and the BBC. He's been quoted in Christianity Today, the U.S. News & World Report, and the L.A. Welcome to More Christ, where we seek to bring some of the world's most interesting and insightful guests to discuss life's central and abiding questions.  In this fifty fifth episode in a series of discussions, I'm joined by Dr Jeremy Begbie.  Jeremy is Thomas A. Langford Distinguished Professor of Theology at Duke Divinity School, Duke University, where he directs Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts. His primary research interest is the correlation between theology and the arts, in particular the interplay between music and theology. He is also an Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge.  He is an ordained minister at the Church of England. Being a professional musician, he has performed as a pianist, oboist, and a conductor.  He is known for his writing and lecturing in theology and the arts, especially music. In September 1997 he founded the Theology Through the Arts project, whose primary aim was "to discover and demonstrate ways in which the arts can contribute towards the renewal of Christian theology". Aspects of the project include conversation among artists and theologians, academic lectures, publications, and arts festivals.  For his book, Resounding Truth: Christian Wisdom in the World of Music, Begbie won the 2008 Christianity Today Book Award in the theology/ethics category.

He has followed this up with a stirring book on identity in Christ, at a time of identity crisis. We also speak about his exciting forthcoming volume, You Need a Better Gospel: Reclaiming the Good News of Participation with Christ.
