A life lived with integrity, virtue, and consistency will maintain the trust necessary to preach hard truths. Too many in our current day are bending, watering down, or just ignoring Scripture, but even against the wave of culture, the Gospel will transform a student’s life. The reality of student ministry is that some kids will get it, and others won’t. The heart is the motivational structure of the soul, it determines how people think, feel, and act. The Gospel deconstructs our focus on self, but we continually return to our fleshly nature. We often ask other student pastors ‘what are you doing that’s working?’ but at the end of the day, dependency on God will always trump strategy. Our relationship with God is an active one. By God’s grace, we have the joy of being made more into His image. Personal discipleship is our continual growth in following Jesus. The mortification of sin is crucial to our personal discipleship, our walk with the Lord, and those around us. Sin doesn’t just affect the sinner; it affects everything.
