Early in his career he served as a State Department Foreign Service Officer, and later as a tech entrepreneur during the first dot-com bubble.  Mark has over two decades of experience assessing and mitigating risk in international cyber and intelligence operations.  He has served at the operator and manager level leading staff in international security and cyber defense operations in high-threat and austere overseas environments.  He has worked across human & technical intelligence, military, and law enforcement disciplines. Mark has training and experience in identifying and countering nation-state cyber threats to protect enterprise and operational systems. As one of the very few selected pilots he flew under the Erasmus bridge in Rotterdam and under the Chainbridge in Budapest. He has raced from all the 4 corners of the globe including races in Rio de Janeiro, Abu Dhabi, The Golden Horn in Istanbul, and in the Navajo territory in Monument Valley.Frank is a perfectionist filled with passion and devotion and he has a great sense of humor. He moved to Deloitte 2006-17 as a partner and he served clients in Europe, North America, Africa and the Middle East, focusing on government in the fields of defence, tax, health and transport. Keith has led a series of charities and is committed to working to promote mentally-healthy workplaces. Episode 25: with Maik Schwarz on establishing risk management structures in radically complex environments (from Afghanistan to South Sudan)

Today we are joined by Maik Schwarz.  Maik grew up in Somalia at the end of the 1980s and has since worked in all kinds of complex and volatile environments. He served two tours of duty in Afghanistan with the Germany military and in 2007 he transitioned to the development sector and stayed in Afghanistan as a Risk Management Advisor for five more years. He played a key role in creating security and risk management structures and procedures across Afghanistan before moving to Yemen, Libya, Somalia, and then the Caucasus region. In 2014 he was tasked to set up a regional risk management structure in Eastern Africa, covering ten countries.
