Part 70 - Dr. Tommy Wood on How to Maintain a Healthy Brain and Body Into Old Age & Crush Life in the Present

Holy smokes were coming in strong with season 6. This one with Dr. Tommy Wood is pretty special. We also have the legendary Allan Savory next week. Get ready now by watching his world famous TED talk on YouTube.   Dr. Tommy Wood is a full-time research assistant professor at the University of Washington in the Department of Pediatrics. The majority of his academic work has focused on developing therapies for brain injury in newborn infants. His current research interests include the physiological and metabolic responses to brain injury, as well as developing easily-accessible methods with which to track human health, performance, and longevity. He does this work through academic positions at University of Washington and the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition.   Tommy received a bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences and Biochemistry from the University of Cambridge before studying medicine at the University of Oxford. He worked as a junior doctor in central London for two years after medical school, and then moved to Norway to complete a PhD in physiology and neuroscience at the University of Oslo.   Tommy is the former President of the Physicians for Ancestral Health society and has also coached and competed in multiple sports including rowing, CrossFit, powerlifting, and ultra-endurance racing.   He’s got a strong foundation in many areas of health and I think his views are really valuable. Some people get hyper-focused on one or two things - which can be super beneficial and can lead to amazing discoveries. But it could also sometimes cause people to only look at things from one viewpoint or miss the forest for the trees. I love looking at all sides of nutrition and keep trying to evolve my views based on the almost 150 people I’ve talked to so far.   It seems some people just take something that a super smart doctor like Paul Saladino says (who’s a good friend of mine, and I mean no disrespect) and take it as the end all, be all. That’s not going to work well in something as complicated as nutrition. I’ll take his well-informed interpretation of the body of evidence and then go listen to another super smart and experienced doctor who believes in more plant-heavy approaches. And then try to make sense of it all. But I don’t have it all figured out either! I’m just confirming my own biases and gravitating towards ideas that fit my views no matter how hard I try not to. The best I’ve come up with through all this is the Sapien diet. It will be ever-evolving as new information comes to light.   Anyway, just listen to this whole episode, even though it’s long. I think it’s really valuable and Tommy is up there on my Mount Rushmore of people who I am totally in line with like Dr. Ted Naiman.   Before we jump in I want to make sure everyone knows about http://NoseToTail.org where we ship 100% grass finished beef and buffalo, and high omega-3 pork and chicken to your door. This is all raised beyond organic in Texas. Our primal ground beef with liver, heart, kidney, and spleen is flying out the door these days. Get while you can, we only process animals every 2 weeks. There’s so many nutrients in this tasty ground beef that are hard to get otherwise. You can make a custom box at http://nosetotail.org and get free shipping if it’s 20lbs or more.   You can also support this podcast and everything else I do at http://patreon.com/peakhuman I’ve been able to scrape by without taking on any advertisers or outside money for any of my ventures so far and really want to keep it that way. The Food Lies film, the Food Lies youtube channel, and all my social media is powered all by the community. I have yet to take a cent from another company. That’s http://patreon.com/peakhuman or click through http://sapien.org where you can find out about all the projects I’m working on including the heath technology. We’re still looking for doctors, healthcare providers, and health coaches to work with us. You can add yourself to the waiting list at http://sapien.org   Thanks for sharing this podcast and reviewing it on iTunes and the Apple podcast app! Part 69 - Mark Schatzker on the Hidden Secrets of Which Foods Are Killing You

Hi there friends. This is Brian Sanders who’s name and photo is now featured on the cover of this podcast. I’m the guy who’s making the Food Lies film which has taken up much of the last 2 years of my life. I’ve interviewed about 150 people now (both formally and casually) on topics of nutrition, health, exercise, and the environment. I’m also the guy that posts something every day on social media that interests me or conveys a point that currently has my attention. Search for Food Lies on Instagram, youtube, twitter, and facebook and you’ll find some great content. Start back at episode 1 to get the full health info download, share with friends and family, and give it a review on itunes or the Apple podcast app. Please know that I really appreciate all of you for doing this! I love interacting with people daily on these social platforms. It helps continue my quest for simple truths about health and nutrition, and hopefully not get caught up in one way of thinking. Let’s get straight to today’s guest, Mark Schatzker who is the author of The Dorito Effect and another book called Steak. I really enjoyed the Dorito Effect and have brought it up on multiple podcasts. His award-winng journalism has appeared in in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Condé Nast Traveler and Best American Travel Writing. He is a field reporter for The Dr. Oz Show as well as a radio columnist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.  I really connected with Mark Schatzker in this episode on so many things. I’m really excited about this one and think it might help people to look at nutrition in a different light. Apparently we’ve both been thinking about some of these nuances in the same way for years. We talked for a while after we stopped recording and followed up on email as well. Some of it may be controversial, so I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts. There’s so much going on when we talk about the concept of “processed foods.” Even when I make a post about it, there’s lots of confusion and pushback about what a processed food actually is. When I posted that the excess fat people carry is just the processed food they have eaten, there was an uproar. I still stand by this statement.  There’s 3 main components to what makes a processed food bad. The first is the diluting of good things like protein, vitamins, and minerals with empty calories like refined sugar, grains, and oils. The second is how those foods interact with your body. They can spike your blood sugar far more than whole foods, interact with your digestive system in different ways, and therefore affect hormones and satiety signals in different ways, as well as other inflammatory effects. The 3rd is the hyperpalatability factor which leads to overconsumption. Throughout history, food processing increased nutrient density. Modern food processing pretty much across the board decreases nutrient density. Therein lies some of the confusion. Sauerkraut is a processed food by most definitions. But for me, it doesn't fit the classical definition because it makes a pretty empty food like cabbage that has anti-nutrients (therefore potentially detrimental), into something nutritious with vitamin C, probiotics, and very little antinutrients through the act of processing - in this case fermenting.  Other people didn't understand how King Henry the 8th, who was famously obese, could get that way without processed foods. Processed foods doesn't just mean McDonald’s and Oreos! He had access to unlimited quantities of refined flour baked goods, sugar, and alcohol. These are the worst of the processed foods! Just because you made a cake at home with organic flour and organic agave, doesn't mean it’s healthy for you. This also goes for a snack bar that is “keto approved” with all natural ingredients. Ok enough out of me, we can get to the episode. I’ll just make a youtube video about it with all my thoughts in order and some graphics. Check the Food Lies youtube for new videos each week. Also please check out http://nosetotail.org which we mention in this episode. This is my grass fed meat company which we both really believe in. And support this show on Patreon at http://patreon.com/peakhuman so I can fend off the advertisers that keep contacting me. Now please enjoy this compelling interview with my new pal and accomplished author and food investigator, Mark Shatzker. BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post   SHOW NOTES   [4:44] Why Mark wrote his books Steak and Dorito Effect. [8:25] Nature knows best, and the more we try to manipulate it and change it, the worse it gets. [12:40] If raised properly, red meat is one of the most beneficial foods you could eat.  [13:30] The shift in our culture from avoiding red meat and leaning towards processed foods has contributed greatly to our health crisis and obesity epidemic. [17:40] Sheep are able to self-medicate and how it relates to our ability to choose to eat certain foods. [19:55] What is flavor feedback and why it matters. [22:10] Do humans possess the same ability? [26:25] How the creation of Doritos has forever changed the way we create food today. [32:10] How flavors trick us into thinking we are getting nutrients and how they are addictive. [39:20] How the industrialization of the food industry has ruined the taste of real food. [48:15] The issue of the protein/nutrient leverage hypothesis. [52:10] Humans were designed to seek out the flavors that brought us the nutrients of what we need.  [57:10] How the corruption and greed of the food industry is affecting our world’s health. [59:50] Just because a product is ‘plant-based’ does not mean it is completely guilt-free and ethical. [1:05:00] MSG: what role does it play in our modern society? [1:06:12] Overuse of the word ‘chemicals’ and the negative connotation it has in our society.  [1:09:35] Mark urges people to read ingredient labels and be wary of foods that are engineered to taste good. [1:13:20] How the flavor model of obesity and satiety model of obesity are related. [1:15:55] Mark’s take on the future regarding obesity and the food industry. [1:17:40] How the use of technology can help us to lead towards the shift towards healthier, natural foods.     BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post   Film site: http://FoodLies.org YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/FoodLies   Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg

Part 68 - Dr. Ben Bikman, Dr. Jaime Seeman, and Dr. Aseem Malhotra Give a Health Masterclass

Hey, hey, how is everyone doing out there? Spectacular I assume. Not many updates this week. I’m just working away on the Food Lies film and the new interviews we got. You can still support it on Indiegogo by clicking through http://FoodLies.org - it’s a community powered project and we’ve taken no outside money at all. Just from the beautiful people like you listening. I’m working on more videos for Patreon supporters. If you go to http://Patreon.com/peakhuman or search for Peak Human there you can support the show, get the extended show notes that are super useful and really add up to entire eBook on nutrition, and get the private videos on cooking and working out as well. Speaking of eBooks, Kristi and I are actually creating a Sapien eBook and 10 week program for complete info on what the Sapien diet and lifestyle is and how to implement it in your life. Look for it soon on http://Sapien.org Lastly just a quick mention of http://nosetotail.org where you can get the grass finished, pasture raised, beyond organic, high omega-3, regenerative farmed meats. It’s grown here in the US (not shipped in all the way from New Zealand like some other meat box services) and delivered to all 48 states. We use the whole animal so boxes come with all kinds of cuts including the ground beef with liver, heart, kidney, and spleen mixed in, as well as the bones for marrow and broth. I’m all about the high omega-3 ground pork breakfast sausage these days. It's already seasoned and you can fry up the most delicious patties with some eggs and maybe a little cheese. If you ever liked fast food breakfast, you’ll think it was gross compared to this meal. You can get it with or without the organs mixed in. We feed the pigs and chickens a special feed (which is pretty expensive) to give them this high omega 3 to omega 6 ratio. It has been independently tested and it blows conventional and even organic pork out of the water. That’s at http://nosetotail.org Now onto this awesome panel discussion! We covered a bunch of stuff including why is fat not bad, but actually good? Why are the Dietary guidelines wrong and what’s stopping mainstream adoption? Is sugar a drug? Why carbs are actually worse than protein/fat for health. Insulin, longevity, and if there are any downsides or myths about these types of diets? I’ve had Ben and Jaime on the podcast already, so you should already know who they are, or I’d recommend going back and listening to their episodes. I say this a lot, but I really recommend going back to episode 1. And please share with friends and family. People send me a lot of messages about how beneficial this podcast is for people new to these topics. They share it and they get hooked! Dr. Aseem Malhotra is a British Cardiologist who’s making waves around the world. I’ll give him a full intro when he comes on the podcast in a couple weeks. We have awesome footage of this panel that will make it to the Food Lies youtube channel soon! Until then, here’s the 3 brainiacs and their wise words! BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post   SHOW NOTES   We have three guests with us today from the Metabolic Health Summit. Dr. Aseem Malhotra is becoming one of the most influential cardiologists in Britain and a world leading expert in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. He is successfully leading the campaign against excessive sugar consumption. The award-winning NHS cardiologist has successfully motivated leading academics, the media and politicians to make sugar reduction a health priority in the UK by publishing commentaries in the BMJ and mainstream media.   Ben Bikman is a professor of pathophysiology and biomedical science at BYU in the physiology and developmental biology department and teaches in pathophysiology. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms that mediate the disruption that causes and accompanies metabolic disorders, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. He has a Ph.D in Bioenergetics at East Carolina University and did a postdoctoral fellowship with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders.   Dr. Jaime Seeman (M.D. FACOG) is a board certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist with a background in Nutrition, Exercise and Health Science. She is also a current Fellow in Integrative Medicine and a Board Certified Ketogenic Nutrition Specialist. She did her undergraduate training at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she was a collegiate athlete for the Cornhuskers receiving many awards and honors. She then continued her education at the University of Nebraska School of Medicine where she received her Doctor of Medicine degree. She is a wife and mom to three little girls. [4:00] Dietary fat consumption has no effect on spiking insulin. [5:25] The obsession/fear with LDL cholesterol. [6:50] Saturated fat does not cause heart disease. [7:05] Jaime Seeman explains how women need adequate amounts of fats for proper hormonal function. [8:56] Does dietary saturated fat increase plasma saturated fat? [10:38] The fats correlated to heart disease is from consumption with starch, sugar, and alcohol. [12:30] What is hyperinsulinemia and what is its role in these metabolic issues?  [14:29] Insulin resistance is at the root of cardiovascular disease. [16:00] Jaime Seeman’s experiment with wearing a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). [23:20] Keys to longevity and how they relate to insulin. [26:25] The importance of resistance training and protein intake for women especially.  [27:20] The more you dampen insulin signaling, the longer life is extended. [31:10] Importance of exercise and protein for the elderly population. [32:10] Kidney issues and consumption of protein? [33:25] There are essential amino acids and fatty acids, but not carbohydrates. [34:15] The ketogenic/low carbohydrate diet is very sustainable contrary to what some people may say. [35:35] The sources of the fat we consume matter.  [37:20] Is sugar a drug? [41:50] How can we get this information into the mainstream and get the masses to adopt these practices?   BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post   Film site: http://FoodLies.org YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/FoodLies   Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg

Part 67 - John & Molly from The Biggest Little Farm on Feeding the World with Regenerative Practices

Hello there beautiful people, I’m just getting back from an extraordinary weekend at the Metabolic Health Summit. I’d highly recommend it next year and I believe they have some super discounted tickets on sale now. I don’t know how much it costs, but it’s worth it! It’s an entire weekend of hanging around all the top researchers and doctors in this space and not only getting to see their latest research in the presentations, but getting to talk to them about it in person. Everyone is walking around and available to talk to - it’s so cool. And of course all the attendees are awesome as well. I got 7 more interviews for Food Lies and I guess the 2nd film that will no doubt be made. I also did some really cool panel discussions that will go to YouTube. The first one was with crowd-favorite Dr. Ben Bikman, and 2 of my new best pals the lovely Dr. Jaime Seeman and Dr. Aseem Malhotra the renowned British cardiologist. The 2nd panel was with 2-time world champion rower and PhD Brianna Stubbs, 2-time world record holding ultra runner Zach Bitter, and 2-time hanging out with Brian nutrition, metabolism, and exercise physiology expert, Mike Mutzel. These will be out on YouTube soon and maybe as a podcast as well. So many great connections and fun things in the works, I can’t begin to name them all. So on to the guests today. John and Molly are an amazing couple that own Apricot Lane Farm which is just north of Los Angeles. They spent the last 8 years creating a thriving regenerative certified organic farm growing many kinds of animals and countless fruit, vegetable, and cover crops. They documented this journey for most of the 8 years and made an award winning film called The Biggest Little Farm. You can watch it on iTunes, Amazon, or Hulu and I suggest you do this immediately. Maybe even before listening on any further. I won’t spoil any of the story and leave it for them to highlight in this podcast or for you to watch in the film. Before we start I’ll just mention a few other things. If you're new to this podcast I’d start at episode 1. It’s best to experience the whole journey and soak up the valuable information from each hand-picked guest. You also should know about http://NoseToTail.org where we deliver grass finished, sustainably raised beef, buffalo, lamb as well as our one-of-a-kind high omega 3 pork and chicken. This is special stuff that is not only beyond organic and humanely raised, but is fed a special diet so that the meat has an extremely high omega 3 to omega 6 ratio. It’s in high demand so we can only sell the bacon 1 package at a time. Our other signature product is the primal ground beef with liver, heart, kidney, and spleen mixed. Very tasty stuff. I’ve seen and heard of so many kids chowing down on this stuff and enjoying it immensely. They don’t mind the organ taste at all and I think have an intuitive sense for the superior nutrition it provides. That’s my company so you can get your meat there and support me (in a small way) and our ranch in Texas. You can also support the Food Lies film on http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post by clicking through http://FoodLies.org - we still are taking preorders and have the Eat Meat shirts there. We are in the last steps of getting the film finished but still need your help. You can also get the private food and exercise videos as well as the extended show notes for this podcast by becoming a Patreon supporter on http://patreon.com/peakhuman  And if you’d like to support in a non-monetary way you can give the podcast a review on iTunes or the Apple podcast app and share any of these things with family and friends! Thanks so much everyone, it wouldn't be possible without you. Please enjoy the really insightful and beautiful words of John & Molly Chester. Part 66 - David Montgomery, PhD on The Foundation of Human & Environmental Health - The Soil: Regenerative Farming & Growing a Revolution

Hello there, we’re back for Season 6! I can’t wait to kick this off and I’m really sorry it took so long to arrive. I had a million things going on working on the Food Lies film back home in Hawaii and also when I got back to LA. Also a couple interviews fell through. I did focus on getting some more video content out on youtube, so check out the Food Lies channel. There’s a ton of short & sweet content to keep you educated and entertained!  My number 1 goal of Peak Human is to have top quality informative content - quality over quantity. I also wanted to not have any conflicts of interest so I decided from day 1 to not have any sponsors. This also allows me to have top quality guests at my own pace. If I was making money per episode I’d have all kinds of random people on because I’d be incentivized to do so. Instead, I briefly mention my own projects and companies before each episode and have guests I really want to have on and take some time off if I need to. So what’s going on with me? We made an epic intro to Food Lies that took months of planning and all kinds of resources. It’s a 4.5 minute piece with 130 shots, each which took many hours to prepare and shoot. This film is going to be something special. As I’ve said before, we could have rushed something out that was a B+ by last fall. We are going for an A+ (which might take a year longer). You can continue to support it’s costly creation on Indiegogo by clicking through http://foodlies.org The trailer is very outdated and was created with almost no budget - so it’s not representative of the final product. We’ll redo it at some point. I also have been fired up about Nose to Tail. I served some of the grass finished primal ground beef with liver, heart, kidney, and spleen at the Meat-Up we had in West LA this past weekend. It was a huge hit and went very quickly. It’s so delicious - you don’t taste the organs - it just tastes like richer, more nutrient dense meat. Especially if you add a little seasoning in. We have all kinds of great stuff on http://NoseToTail.org that’s all sustainably and ethically raised, beyond organic, high omega 3, and extra tasty. Per popular demand, I’ve been making some cooking videos and am just finishing my 15 minute workout routine video for Patreon members. I only work out 4 times per week for 15 minutes and have seen great results. If you go to http://patreon.com/peakhuman and join as a supporter you’ll get these private videos and also support this podcast and everything else I do. I really, really appreciate everyone who has stepped up and done this. I honestly turn down sponsors each and every week because I don’t want to promote other people’s products and get caught up in all that - even if I totally agree with what they’re selling! It’s just a few bucks per month at Patreon.com/peakhuman or click through the link in my Instagram bio. My instagram is where most of the action takes place daily. If you're not following there my handle is http://instagram.com/food.lies That’s it! Give the show a review on itunes or click on 1-5 stars in the podcast app if you’d like to do something that’s free. You can also share any of my content with family or friends of course! So here’s a bit about my Guest today. David R. Montgomery is a MacArthur Fellow and professor of geomorphology at the University of Washington. He is an internationally recognized geologist who studies landscape evolution and the effects of geological processes on ecological systems and human societies. An author of award-winning popular-science books, he has been featured in documentary films, network and cable news, and on a wide variety of TV and radio programs, including NOVA, PBS NewsHour, Fox and Friends, and All Things Considered. His books have been translated into nine languages. He also travels the country speaking and educating on regenerative practices. I first caught wind of him from his excellent book DIRT: Erosion of Civilizations and am halfway done with his book Growing a Revolution. Listen to this interview and you’ll probably want to grab them both. He’s an awesome guy doing great things. Although soil seems like a boring topic, trust me, there’s a lot more to it, and a ton of great info in this interview. Without further ado, here’s Professor David Montgomery.   BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post   SHOW NOTES (Need to add 4:20 to these timestamps to account for the intro) [4:15] Our main focus should be how we raise food, whether it is plant or animal based. [5:15] David explains gross biogeography and how it should influence us on how to feed the world. [6:18] How the modern factory method of raising livestock is destroying our soil.  [6:42] David explains how organic plant-based farms aren’t in the clear either. [1:00:45] What are cover crops and how they help with preventing soil degradation (the second pillar of regenerative agriculture). [1:02:29] The diversity of crops and the soil that it will bring (the third pillar of regenerative agriculture). [1:03:15] The role livestock plays in regenerative agriculture practices and how they are incredibly beneficial. [1:05:40] Nitrogen fixing microbes in the soil and how it works. [1:06:30] The relationship of plants, rocks, and fungi.  [1:10:00] Profitability of regenerative agriculture practices compared to conventional methods.  [1:15:10] Are we able to feed the US with regenerative farming practices? We ran outside to feed his backyard chickens and pigs and then got the mics going.   Mike Mutzel has an MS in clinical nutrition and currently focuses his efforts on communicating the science behind longevity, fasting, ketosis, exercise and all things pertaining to improving our metabolic health   BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post   SHOW NOTES Mike Mutzel has an MS in clinical nutrition and currently focuses his efforts on communicating the science behind longevity, fasting, ketosis, exercise and all things pertaining to improving our metabolic health He raises his own pigs, chickens, and turkeys in his backyard  He thinks it’s important for his daughter to eat real food and see where it comes from  Raising animals has improved his mental well-being  Mike started his health journey just simply removing the buns from his burgers Measuring objective biomarkers motivates people to stick to lifestyle changes because they can see the benefits Mike was exposed to drugs and alcohol at a very young age and used diet and exercise to improve his life Soy protein made him depressed and gave him GI issues  Mike got into keto because of his interest in heart rate variability  The ketogenic diet is not stressful on the body Mike runs blood labs twice a year to know he is on the right track  Donates blood twice a year now that he is eating more meat His wife follows OMAD and has seen amazing benefits  Him and his wife got full body MRIs and DEXA scans to show that their lifestyle is benefiting them Pros and cons to testing biomarkers  GrimAge test to test your biological age against your chronological age Ancel Keys and the Minnesota Starvation Experiment  The Game Changers nuances Mike’s experience losing a lot of weight and muscle with veganism  Time-restricted feeding, alternate day fasting, and early time restricted feeding Circadian biology and feeding times Mike isn’t concerned with coffee during his morning fast Fasting will lower glucose and insulin and increase glucagon and ketosis  Reducing glycemic variability has some benefits for reducing oxidative stress Mike does a 24-hour fast every Monday  Fasting is a stoich practice and teaches discipline Fasting is not just about restricting calories  You wouldn’t do the same workout every single day, and variability of energy intake works the same: restricting food intake (fasting) and feeding (maybe some days you are in a surplus)  Fasting causes you to deal with how you use food to fill voids in your life (emotional eating)  Fasting is a very safe practice People who claim fasting is a stressor need to understand that eating is stressful on the body Your body can anticipate the intake of food How long do we need to fast to induce autophagy? Mike thinks on a bare minimum everyone should be fasting for at least 12 hours a day Autophagy declines as you age Mike’s thoughts on One Meal A Day (OMAD)  People are scared that protein is going to stimulate mTOR but they should be more concerned with mTOR over-expression The importance of sleep Chronic calorie restriction vs periodic fasting Kids who eat the proper foods are so much more well-behaved   Where to find Mike Mutzel:  www.highintensityhealth.com https://www.instagram.com/metabolic_mike https://www.youtube.com/highintensityhealth

Part 64 - Did James Wilks Get Anything Right Against Chris Kresser? With Paul Saladino MD

Alright everyone, I’m fired up about this one! Dr. Paul Saladino was up in LA yesterday and we recorded some gold here. We spent the weekend digging through studies to give the much needed rebuttal to the “debate” between James Wilks and Chris Kresser on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. For those not familiar with this, it was a huge deal. Joe Rogan has the most popular podcast in the world (by far I believe) with many millions of worldwide listeners and viewers on youtube as well - per episode. James Wilks is one of the producers of the Game Changers - the most recent installment of vegan propaganda films. Listeners will know we already put out a feature-length film debunking his film on YouTube, aptly named Game Changers DEBUNKED. We just posted a document at sapien.org/gamechangers with 156 studies and 57 resources listed to go along with the film. We put many of the studies on screen, but due to limited time couldn’t reference each one. So here’s a bit more context: Chris Kresser went on the Joe Rogan podcast and debunked the Game Changers. He did a great job and we included some of that footage in our film with his permission. James Wilks then went on to defend himself, but instead, attacked Chris personally and used many tactics to avoid answering the simple question of “why do you think red meat is bad?” He did catch Kresser on some things, I think. But for many points, he actually didn’t if you look more into it. James just caught Chris off guard and cited studies Chris wasn’t familiar with. Paul and I looked into those and found out James was actually wrong, was completely overstating what the study said, or made false claims about the dates of references that were central to his criticism of Chris. I’ll leave it at that for now and get on to the show. I’ll skip any ads for this one and will just encourage people to go to Sapien.org for more information about my film Food Lies which will be the ultimate answer to vegan propaganda films, to support me on Patreon so I can keep doing stuff like this, and to share this episode with someone. I’d really recommend watching the YouTube video version of this one. We show all the studies we mention on screen and all the graphics and tables as well. That will be posted on the Food Lies youtube channel on Tuesday. The site where all the studies can be found is http://sapien.org/debate This will be an extensive page with timestamps, notes, and links to all studies mentioned. Lastly, I think it would be valuable for Joe Rogan to be aware of this. I hope people share the video with him. I think it would be great for Joe to have James bring his “science advisor” back on the podcast and Paul and I could come on and have a debate without all the ad hominem attacks. We can share studies beforehand and break this all down once and for all. It would be filmmaker and science advisor against filmmaker and science advisor. Although, as you’ll see in this episode, Paul will be doing most of the talking.   BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post     SHOW NOTES   FULL SHOW NOTES: http://sapien.org/debate [12:20] Wilks complains how the meat industry research is largely funded by interest groups, but this is the case with all industries [14:40] Dairy products and cancer association  [18:45] James Wilks completely misinterpreted the Dairy Product Consumption and Prostate Cancer RIsk in the United States  [16:20] The issue with epidemiological studies  [20:19] Does dairy cause inflammation? Part 63 - Gabe Brown on the Little Known Truth About Cows, Crops, the Environment, and Our Future

Hello, hello good people, I hope you all had a joyous Thanksgiving. I certainly did with some friends up in Seattle for a SAPIEN style dinner, finishing the Game Changers DEBUNKED film, having the awesome Meat-Up and film viewing, hanging with everyone’s favorite Dr. Ted Naiman, and then going to Mike Mutzel’s house and backyard farm for a podcast. A bit more info on each. Mike Mutzel is known as metabolic Mike and has a longstanding podcast called High Intensity Health - go check him out, he’s a great guy. Everyone should be familiar with the Game Changers DEBUNKED film by now. There’s 2 versions out on youtube as of late - one with the “deleted scenes” and one with just the info and none of the gags. When we started this on Halloween, Shawn Baker, Chris Kruger, and I had the idea to do some skits and have some fun with this. I appreciate the fact that not everyone is looking for that so we have both options! Lastly, a SAPIEN way of eating, for anyone unfamiliar, is how a growing number of people are characterizing how they eat and live. It encompasses many dietary strategies from pescatarian all the way to keto and carnivore. It has a sweet spot (where I like to be) with over 90% of calories coming from animal foods. This makes it high fat, low carb, and mainly has you running on fat. It is nose to tail. It embraces smaller feeding windows of one meal per day to 2 meals in 8 hours (which I like). It is based on all whole foods. It’s also not based on any dogma. Humans have evolved to eat many things over millions of years, and even in the last 10,000 years. It also focuses on the other lifestyle factors as like getting quality sleep, exercise, sun, etc. You can learn more at http://Sapien.org/diet You can also learn about the grass finished meat at http://NoseToTail.org that’s shipped to the 48 states. It is all grown ethically, organically, and sustainably. We have unique and nutrient dense foods such as Primal ground beef that includes liver, heart, kidney, and spleen. We also have high omega 3 pork and chicken that blows away conventional and even organically grown animals. I’m proud to offer these products delivered to your home, but also encourage people to find local farmers and source from them. Now onto a food producer I’d also love to endorse who’s meat you can get if you’re in the North Dakota area, Mr. Gabe Brown. I saw a TEDx talk of his 2 years ago and had a long call with him soon after. I wanted to include him in the film but it didn’t quite work out. I’m glad we finally reconnected and found some time to record a talk. Gabe Brown is a farmer and leader in the movement towards regenerative agriculture. He is the owner of Brown’s Ranch, just east of Bismarck, ND. He believes in and practices Holistic Management, a part of which is farming and ranching in nature's image. At his ranch improving soil health is a priority and no-till farming has been practiced since 1993. His ranch has eliminated the use of synthetic fertilizers, fungicides, and pesticides. He does not use any GMOs or glyphosate. His ever evolving grazing strategy allows most of his pastures a recovery period of over 360 days. All of these practices have led to the health of the soil, mineral and water cycles to greatly improve and of course the quality of the agriculture and livestock he produces as well.  Make sure to listen to the end. There’s some great info all the way through. He has solutions to some huge worldwide problems with simple and proven practices. Last quick things - Food Lies is going strong. We have a new and awesome graphics guy that is really savvy with all this info and is eager to help the cause. Please support this podcast by giving it a review on itunes or the podcast app. And also support our endeavors on Patreon at http://patreon.com/peakhuman We’re doing the extended show notes each week with all the extra info and studies and also creating some new video content. There’s been a high demand for my 14 minute workout. I am going to make videos available to Patreon supporters of this and more about eating and other lifestyle practices that won’t be available to the public. Appreciate everyone’s support and now let’s hear from the spectacular Gabe Brown BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post   SHOW NOTES   [10:34] What is tilling soil and should we do it or not? [38:00] By improving the soil ecosystem and the health of it, we can vastly improve the agricultural nutrient and livestock nutrient density. [42:50] The corruption and greed of modern agriculture. [48:30] The biology in our guts are directly related to the biology in the soil. [51:20] If these practices are so good, why isn’t everyone doing it? [54:40] Good thing it isn’t all bad news as we are seeing a shift towards regenerative agriculture. [57:19] There are major differences in the soil on regenerative farms and neighboring farms. [1:08:20] How the crops, animals and soil all work together as an ecosystem. Part 62 - Dr. Jaime Seeman on Body Composition, Hormones, Thyroid, Women’s Health, and Meat

Hey, hey, we’re back. Let’s get straight to it. I gotta get back to working on the Game Changers DEBUNKED film. Please support that on http://Indiegogo.com/projects/gamechangers-debunked or click through the show notes. Just to make sure, I want to let people know this a scientific and factual debunking film with researchers and doctors addressing the science. Yes, we have a bit of fun here and there to keep it interesting, but it’s all about the truth, and exposing their cherry picking and misrepresenting science to fit their agenda. Dr. Jaime Seeman AKA Dr. Fit and Fabulous is a board certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist with a background in Nutrition, Exercise and Health Science. This was an awesome one - so many topics my guests haven’t covered yet. I wish we recorded some more updated stuff about the blood spinning tests she’s doing for the Game Changers DEBUNKED mini-doc. She ate 5 eggs and 3 pieces of bacon and spun her blood in a centrifuge and it was - guess what - clear. The Game Changers mockumentary tried to say animal foods caused cloudy blood plasma. They did a little “experiment” in the film and showed it was cloudy after a beef burrito and clear after a bean burrito. They are outright liars and cheaters I tell ya! They are deceiving the world with false information. Two engineers in Seattle also debunked this by eating huge amounts of lamb and milk fat and producing clear blood plasma as well. Dr. Jaime is going to do a 2nd experiment tomorrow and match the amount of fat and calories of a beef and cheese burrito with a vegan burrito and see if it produces cloudy blood. What’s likely going on here is that eating a high carb AND high fat meal creates more triglycerides in the blood for a longer time. There’s more to this that will all be explained in the mini-doc. So please support that on Indiegogo in the last few days of the campaign. There’s a lot of overtime going into this with editors, graphics people, sound people, etc. Food Lies is looking great - I just was going over some of it with the separate editing team. NoseToTail.org is firing on all cylinders and it’s hard for us to keep that good meat in stock. Learn more about all this at http://sapien.org And give this podcast a review on Apple! Thanks so much! I can’t wait to air this mini-doc on November 27th on YouTube. We’ll have a Meat-Up and viewing party in Seattle - Sunday Dec 1st and another one in LA on thursday Dec 5th. [14:40] Is carnivore safe for pregnancy?  [17:06] The carnivore diet helps a lot of people but it wont work for everyone.  [18:50] Her main takeaway - let's eat a diet of whole, unprocessed foods that are natural and with no ingredient list. Part 61 - Dr. Joan Ifland on How to Conquer Food Addiction, and the Behavioral, Emotional, and Mental Component of Eating

Hello everyone, welcome back to the time of week where I get to share another fantastic guest with you. I try to get all kinds of thought leaders and experts covering a wide variety of topics that pertain to your health, fitness, longevity, and even environmental health. They're all connected - who would have thought. If you’re new to this show, I’m Brian Sanders and I’m creating the feature-length documentary Food Lies that seems to be taking forever to come out. But that’s just because it’s going to be that good. Please be patient. We’re actually learning more each day and more and more things are happening in the world that either are going to make this film better or that we need to address. It’s turning out to be a good thing, in a way, that we didn’t rush this thing out. We have more resources, better experts, and more opportunities that are too many to name. Learn more at http://FoodLies.org In the meantime I’m creating the Game Changers DEBUNKED film which is almost in a rough cut somehow even though we just started it! It’s been a whirlwind and we’re moving at lightning speed. It also is opening doors and benefitting the Food Lies film. Look out for it on YouTube on November 27th - be sure to subscribe to the Food Lies channel. We’ll also try to get it on another platform. Thanks for supporting its creation on Indiegogo. You still can help out and even get a producer credit - just search for Game Changers DEBUNKED on http://Indiegogo.com/projects/gamechangers-debunked or click through the show notes. I also work with patients at Evolve Healthcare in Los Angeles. We have a medical clinic where Dr. Gary Shlifer and I treat the root cause of disease with diet and lifestyle. This is part of our company SAPIEN and the Sapien diet. Find out more at http://Sapien.org I also have a company similar to Butcher Box called Nose to Tail. The difference is we raise our animals in the US and we use the entire animal. We have the organ meats mixed into ground beef, buffalo, and pork and also sell the bones and bone broth. It’s all grass fed and finished and raised sustainably and ethically. You can even get a thanksgiving turkey with ultra high omega-3s due to our special diet we feed them. Get it delivered to you at http://NosetoTail.org Now onto today’s guest. Dr. Joan Ifland who has been creating breakthroughs in recovery from food addiction starting in 1999. She is currently at work on evidence-based trainings for health professionals.  Dr. Ifland is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. She earned her PhD in addictive nutrition at Union Institute and University and her MBA at Stanford Business School  She was selected by the Oprah Winfrey Network as the food addiction specialist on the Book of John Gray. Dr. Ifland is the lead author of the first scholarly publication describing refined food addiction and the definition of addictive foods. She’s doing great things in this space including giving talks and creating support groups to continue to help people with problems around food. I think she has very valuable additions to the health conversation that go beyond what has been covered in the past 60 episodes of this podcast and most other podcasts and lectures I’ve heard. And if you want to get the super valuable extended show notes and support the show please go to Patreon and search for Peak Human or http://patreon.com/peakhuman The other way to support the show is to simply give it a 1-5 star rating on the Apple podcast app or iTunes and give it a review. Thanks so much, I really appreciate everyone. I love all the messages I receive and am glad people are finding this podcast valuable!
