My parents have always talked about going on a service mission for our church together someday for as long as I can remember, but the plan was always for them to leave after retirement age. They shocked my siblings and me about a year ago at Christmas time when they announced to our family they'd be leaving on an 18 month mission to Barcelona Spain in 2020, NOT because my dad was retiring early, but because they felt extremely impressed that this was the will of the Lord. Today we walk through both of their a-typical journeys in faith and growing up in less-than-ideal circumstances as young church members, where my dad gained his burning love for missionary work and how my mom became truly converted to the gospel, and the crazy back-story of deciding to put my dad's career on hold for 18 months to serve as missionaries for a year and a half in Spain. My dear college friend and fellow broadcast journalism classmate from BYU, Kelsey Nixon is today's podcast guest. Imagine what it would be like to go from everything being totally normal one day, to finding out through a voicemail the next day that your child has cancer and needs to seen by an oncologist immediately. That's just the beginning of my friend Amanda Smith's story and today she has graciously agreed to share her family's story of her 7 year old daughter Lynden's diagnosis and 6 rounds of chemo that started only a few months ago. The MOST remarkable part of this story is that Lynden and her family have raised over $40,000 for the pediatric cancer research foundation, all because Lynden asked her mom if she'd donate to the Ronald McDonald box every time she went through the drive-thru after Lynden was diagnosed. Lynden also has a remarkable story of chopping off and donating her hair to crowns for courage a YEAR before she ever knew she would need that same donation herself. Their story is incredibly inspiring, heartwarming and so perfect to lead us into the holiday season where everyone's hearts tend to be a little more open to giving. The season of giving and doing a little more good around the world is upon us, and this week I'm bringing a guest on to tell you about one of my FAVORITE non-profit organizations, Days for Girls. Celeste Mergens, the founder and CEO of Days for Girls, shares with me her incredibly powerful story of being led by the Lord to start an organization to help women and young girls in developing countries with reusable supplies for menstruation. Days for girls also teaches and educates people globally about their bodies, how to stay safe and avoid human trafficking and become more empowered to stay in school, be leaders in their careers, and wait till their bodies are ready to bear children. The life-changing impact that Days for Girls is having around the world is absolutely astounding to me, with 1.5 million women now empowered to take their days back monthly when many of them used to have to stay home with no other solution during those 5 days of their cycle. They have a long way to go with 50 million women suffering from a lack of solution and education around this issue. As an 8-year helicopter pilot for the US Army and now wife to a man in active duty, toting two darling kids all over the United States and sharing her journey every step of the way, Amy Lou Hawthorne is an American sweetheart who has stolen the hearts of many of my current listeners and followers. I recently asked on my instagram stories for suggestions of people to interview for Veteran's Day who either were in the armed forces themselves or married to someone in active duty, and Amy Lou Hawthorne was the overwhelming favorite and most suggested out of anyone. I was delighted to find out that not only is she an army wife who understands the struggle of having a spouse away on active duty, but she herself also served in the military for 8 years as a helicopter pilot.
