95: Bullying: why it happens and what to do about it

From a former bully and someone who’s been bullied, Neil and I both share our experiences with bullying in today’s podcast. We talk about why Neil was a bully as a kid, and what he’s done to try to make it right. We also share tips from professionals on how to help your child to NOT be a bully, and what to do if they are being bullied. Finally, I share a personal story of when I was bullied in middle school, how that has affected me, and what I’ve tried to do to make that a learning experience. As you’re listening to this episode, hopefully, you can think back on those times you were treated unkindly and maybe times you’ve treated others unkindly. Let this serve as a gentle knock on your door to remind you to do better where you can, to teach by example, and to make amends, whether directly or indirectly, so true healing can happen. In this episode, you will hear: How the 12 steps apply to bullying Step 4 - doing an inventory of the wrongs you've committed against others and the exact nature of your wrongs How most of your core beliefs - why you believe what you believe about yourself and the world around you - are shaped by your childhood experiences Faulty core beliefs cause problems later in life including depression, addiction, or malady. What do you do about knowing that you may have caused some trauma to someone? How do you make that right? Step 9 - prepare yourself to make direct amends with someone, and if for some reason that's not possible, make indirect amends The powerful healing experience of making amends Why bullies bully - the link between “coolness” and aggression Ways to prevent bullying behavior in your kids (and it starts at home through teaching by example) How these issues stem from seeking validation Humility is one of the hardest things. Bullies have a lot going on at home (ex. anger, grief, etc.) What to do if your child is being bullied Learning from the bullying experience instead of choosing a victim mentality  Supporting Resources:“The Worth of Souls and the Problem of Bullying” by Jonathan Cox https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/2015/10/the-worth-of-souls-and-the-problem-of-bullying?lang=eng “Knowing Why Bullies Bully is Key to Stopping the Trend” by Michael Friedman PhD https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/brick-brick/201405/knowing-why-bullies-bully-is-key-stopping-the-trend Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast? 94: Jane Clayson Johnson on Depression: a candid conversation about our experiences with mental illness

Jane Clayson Johnson is an award-winning journalist widely known for her work at CBS News, ABC News, and on the nationally syndicated NPR program, On Point. For more than two decades, she traveled the world, covering domestic and international stories and interviewing the biggest newsmakers of the day. At CBS News, Jane was co-anchor of The Early Show, a regular correspondent for 48 Hours, and an investigative reporter for “Eye on America” segments for the CBS Evening News. In 2018, Jane published her book Silent Souls Weeping, sharing an open and frank exploration of her own experience with clinical depression. She goes on to share stories gathered from interviews with more than 150 men, women, and teens who have suffered from depression. Today, Jane and I have a very candid, open conversation about both of our experiences with depression, what she's learned from interviewing others, and her advice to those suffering from this same trial in life, or to those with loved ones who suffer from mental illness. If you are struggling with mental health issues yourself. You're not alone. There are other people out there who have walked your path, and who have walked it successfully. It's not without pain, and it's not without heartache. But there is HOPE and there is HELP. In this episode, you will hear: Jane's unforgettable assignments as a journalist Falling into clinical depression What drove Jane to write a book - to break the stigma of mental illness Why are we so ashamed to talk about depression? Everybody has a story. Someone is suffering in your world, the more compassion you have, the more you understand there are ways to help. Why we need to be mental health-friendly The two themes that always came up in her interviews: stigma and what depression does to the spiritual self They say, pray harder that depression and mental illness will go away. Would you sit in a corner and pray your heart disease will go away?  Depression is a disease, it's not a spiritual deficit.  Brain health as a critically important component of real, full, and complete health Stigma and how perfectionism affects that You can’t fix this with work and discipline, you need treatment. 92: Quickly apologizing: a principle that’s changed our marriage

When Neil and I worked a 12-step program years ago, we both took on a serious commitment to “continue to take personal inventory, and when you’re wrong, promptly admit it.” This COMMITMENT has completely changed our relationship for the better. But it’s not always easy! And it certainly doesn’t come naturally for me. Today, we’re sharing a few stories from our own MARRIAGE of how we’ve applied this, exactly what it looks, feels, and sounds like, and how it can change all of your relationships for the better too.The rent is so high when you hold on to pride or resentment. While the payout is so huge when you learn to apologize to the people you love as QUICKLY as possible, and just let love conquer pride, even (and especially) when you’re not at fault.  In this episode, you will hear: Saying “I was wrong” is often just as important as saying “I love you” in healing a relationship.  A commitment to take responsibility for mistakes The great enemy of charity is pride. Pride is one of the biggest reasons marriages and families struggle. Especially when you are not at fault, let love conquer pride.  Cleaning up your side of the street, figuring out where you did wrong in the situation Selfishness is one of the more common faces of pride. Don’t try to be perfect, try to be better. There is so much peace and happiness waiting on the other side of an apology. The central feature of pride is enmity toward God and enmity toward our fellow men.  Satan's trick is to make us feel like we're getting something out of being resentful or being right or holding on to pride or anger.   Supporting Resources:Talk by Dieter F. 90: Remember: why this word is so important to us

The word REMEMBER originated from the Latin meaning “called to mind” or “mindful” and today we are going to talk about why remember is such an important word to us, in our lives, and in our spiritual journey. We share some personal and sacred spiritual and life experiences about remembering, and examples from the scriptures and from the Savior on why the word remember is, as Spencer W Kimball once said, “perhaps the most important word in the English language.”Remembrance has been an impactful element in our spiritual journey. And if it’s something that you feel has also strengthened you in the past, it’s very important that you write it down, talk about it, or share it with someone because building your testimony solely on a few miracles that happen in your life may not be as strong. They will start to fade and they may not come back to your remembrance as much. So doing those will help bring things to your remembrance and continue to strengthen you in the future. In this episode, you will hear: The number of times the word remember is mentioned in the Books of Scripture Examples of prophets and people having experiences of remembering Lessons from Alma the Younger Elder Renlund’s speech about the concept of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying Neil’s powerful conversation with his brother and remembering the promise he made Approaching recovery from addition day by day Jesus as the perfect example of remembering the Scriptures in his teachings My personal experience when reading the words of Isaiah The power of remembering your purpose and your spiritual experiences The multiplication of my breast milk as a testimony builder Being careful about the other influences in your life that either dull or sharpen your spirit Supplementing your spiritual muscle-building with Scriptures  Supporting Resources:Book of Mormon “Alma the Younger is Converted” videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zsxb5QVcGmQDale G. 89: Dallas Jenkins and The Chosen: Getting to Know Jesus in a Whole New Way

If you’re a Christian (and even if you’re not!) there’s a good chance you’ve heard people talk about the new TV series about Jesus called The Chosen. The Chosen is the first-ever multi-season series television show about Jesus Christ. It’s the #1 highest crowd-funded project of all-time at $10 million from over 19,000 people, and it has already been translated into 50 languages and counting.Today, I get to sit down with the director and creator of The Chosen, Dallas Jenkins, and ask him all about the inspiration, the behind-the-scenes magic, and the miracles that have taken place while filming, producing, and directing this show that has swept the world with a new passion for learning about the character of Christ. So many people like me have become super fans of this project because it’s giving us an entirely new perspective on what Jesus must really be like as a person, and this ignites our desire even more to know Jesus and understand His life as recorded in scripture. In this episode, you will hear: Tapping into Jesus as a human being How Dallas built up the characters to explore the context and the human element so these biblical moments are made even more impactful  Jesus’ unique relationship with women The profound, visceral, emotional experience that happens to the actors when they’re playing their roles The Chosen as a reminder to set aside the things that take us away from God (vices, addiction, pride, narcissism, and other things we’re not willing to give up yet) Total surrender comes after true brokenness How God is using the show to pierce through your heart The more you empty yourself, the more you can be filled by the replacement, which is Spirit How God’s impossible math works Why your job is not to feed the 5,000, but to be the best baker and the best fisherman  Supporting Resources:The Chosen Serieshttps://www.angel.com/watch/the-chosen The Chosen YouTube Channel  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBXOFnNTULFaAnj24PAeblgThe Chosen Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/InsideTheChosen/ Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast? 88: Enduring It Well: Why God Allows Long-Suffering

If you’re in the midst of a trial that feels like it’s lasting forever and you cannot understand why, or if you’ve ever asked yourself “when will this suffering end?” then today’s podcast is for you. Neil and I are going to talk about long-suffering and trials that seem to last forever. We felt this would be a good topic because a lot of people are going through so many hard things right now. We’re talking about the reasons we go through trials that last a long time, what we’re supposed to do about them, and some comforting words of hope that we turn to, especially during challenging times. Most hard things don't last forever. And someday, we're going to get to heaven where our Heavenly Father is going to make everything right, and perfect justice and mercy will take over. And so, we want to encourage everyone to hang in there, have faith, and just keep going. In this episode, you will hear: Your trials and life struggles are going to CHANGE you. We need to go through certain things to become like Jesus Christ. Healing doesn't come as quickly as you would hope. Is the highest good to avoid all suffering? "Christianity is comforting, but often not comfortable."  When you suffer, God wants to polish you a little more. It’s okay to mourn and be sad like when Jesus wept over Lazarus’ death Jesus experienced all things everyone went through and overcame them. Why can’t God just take my challenges away from me? Becoming Christlike is a lifelong pursuit and often involves slow, imperceptible change. God doesn’t work like a vending machine. The willingness to be submissive to what God knows is best for us The concept of having an eternal perspective: Seeing eternity and what’s to come vs. having a myopic view of your life The Lord is aware of your concerns and anguish. He loves you deeply and forever. Jennifer Anderson is a mom, wife, registered dietitian, and creator behind the brand Kids Eat in Color. When Jennifer was a new mom, she learned that feeding kids is sometimes tricky. Through the same institution, she organized her own dietetic internship, focusing on policy and organizational management in the Washington DC metro area.Jennifer is passionate about teaching parents that they’re doing a great job – regardless of whether their kids eat their veggies (or whatever food) today – and to enjoy their kids and their mealtimes instead of feeling angry, defeated, and frustrated. Today, Jennifer shares some wonderful insights into how we, as parents, can improve our child’s feeding while holding a loving, firm boundary around meals, and how we can feel more connected to our kids – because our connection to our family and our children is so much more important than whether they eat a carrot or not!In this episode, you will hear: First foods you can introduce to babies and how to prevent picky eating The importance of high-iron foods What happens when your child doesn’t eat what you put on the table?
