Whether you're hearing this live on the day it's published or years from now, it still has the same weight and the capacity to uplevel and change your life. That is my promise that by the end of this solocast, I'm going to give you an actionable guide, as well as some science and spirituality behind self-sabotage, why we do it, and how we stop the cycle. How do we unhinge from the very thing that we know is causing us pain but we just aren't aware of what the root of that thing actually is? Well, it may seem shocking some people undermined their own good intentions and long-term success goals because self-sabotage occurs in the shadows when people hinder their own success, and take destructive steps without actually knowing it. Maybe some deeper part of them knows it because their harmful behavior shows up as the results of their lives with negative impacts in nearly every part of their existence, including money, relationships, career health... You name it. Self-sabotage shows up in so many deleterious ways.   [01:15] Unconscious Destructive Behaviour So first, let's go over why people self-sabotage. People, unconsciously block their progress for so many different types of reasons. They may consciously or unconsciously commit these acts of self-sabotage and the causes range from childhood issues, epigenetics, emotional epigenetics, prior relationships, and heartbreak essentially all the ways that the ego that is wounded tries to stay safe. Other reasons for this destructive behavior stems from low self-esteem, or a sense of not being good enough and coping with cognitive dissonance, which I'll go into in a moment. So if we know what we want and we know what we don't want, then why is there a disconnect between our embodiment of how we show up in the world, and the results of our life? In other words, if we know what we don't want and what we do want then why do we continue to receive what we don't? Well, I will share with you that people who self-sabotage may be aware of their actions, for example, somebody who is overweight and on a diet might consciously sabotage their efforts by eating a whole chocolate cake or staying up till 4 AM, and then eating a whole pizza. Or they might act from an unconscious place where they miss a work deadline which on the surface it seems like they were running late, but the truth is they are afraid of failure, so the human being self-sabotage is by unconsciously missing the due date and bypasses their goal to advance in the company. Difficult childhood growing up in a dysfunctional family can contribute towards a proclivity towards self-sabotage. We act out unconsciously what we see from our parents so without a secure attachment style you might have an ambivalent or vacillation or avoidant attachment style. It's because our earliest engagement and lessons from our parents and caregivers drastically impacted how we connect to ourselves and others. Take an inventory right now, take a deep breath. There's something that you wanted from the solocast and this is the core of how you get it. Question: Did your parents tell you growing up that you'll never amount to much or that you're not good enough or did you have people in your life when you were growing up especially ages 3 through 7, but even 7 through 18, those are the very formative years where neuroplasticity and neurogenesis are in full speed from a brain perspective. In childhood, we are delicate like a rose and require water, sunlight, and nourishment, and if we don't get that emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally, then unconsciously, we will act out the exact situations in childhood from an unconscious space until they get healed.   [04:32] Relationships And Self Sabotage Here's your first action step: take an emotional inventory. I've talked about this in-depth on the Hypervigilance Solocast, which you can access at JoshTrent.com/490, and also the Emotional Epigenetics Solocast a JoshTrent.com/499 these are two huge scaffoldings that will help you understand this podcast and give you more context on what I am teaching today. Another core root of self-sabotage has been difficult relationships. For example, if your ex-partner consistently put you down, you still might feel bruised or broken in this way. Based on a recent scientific study on self-sabotage from Cambridge University, psychologists who specialized in intimate relationships in Australia identified the main issues for the recurrence of self-sabotage in romantic relationships. The reasons included insecure attachment style, low self-worth, the fear of having their heart broken, fear of commitment, unhealthy, toxic beliefs about relationships, they learn from their parents and society, and coping problems when it relates to matters of the heart. And, lastly, at the root is cognitive dissonance or the mental discomfort that a human being may have when they hold two conflicting ideas at the same time. Humans are pleasure-seeking, and pain-avoidant creatures, who like to have consistency between their beliefs and actions. As an example, if you marry someone you love, but you come from a dysfunctional family where your dad left and your mother went from one abusive stepfather or boyfriend to another… You unconsciously, don't believe in a stable, loving marriage yet continue to plan the wedding and send invitations. Here's another example related to work when it comes to cognitive dissonance. You are about to land a huge client and earn the most money you've ever earned but rather than do what it takes to close the deal you hold yourself back because you don't feel worthy. You might even get drunk the night before or miss the meeting with the potential client completely, and rather than of had to take action to literally shoot yourself in the foot, because on a deep level, you don't feel worthy. Self-sabotage leads to chronic struggles with sex, pornography, drugs, food, alcohol, gambling, shopping, workaholism, and even self-injury. This destructive behavior has topical roots to exactly what we will talk about next.   [08:31] Procrastination + Perfectionism Now that we've gone over the science of self-sabotage, let's talk about procrastination and perfectionism, which are really equally deleterious and equally challenging to hold. It has been said that perfectionism is really just a trauma response. A great resource for this is if you head over to JoshTrent.com/461, where I can quote Dr. Wendy Myers: "For many people, perfectionism is a response to trauma. It's not that you just want to do everything perfectly. It's a defense mechanism we create, which can lead to a negative mindset and a constant inner critic." Holding oneself to an impossible standard causes delays in setbacks. Well, it seems like such a positive thing to aim for things to go as planned without any problems, perfectionism is really a belief that if you're seen as imperfect, then you won't be loved. And that's at the bottom of it for me and for all of us. Then there's procrastination, procrastination is a way you show others you're never ready and put off taking your time and being mindful until the last second so you can get that huge rush of energy because really you don't trust yourself to do it without a state of stress. I can see from my own journey with procrastination. It really came from me not feeling that I could handle at all without the stress hormones that drove me to push me beyond my beliefs, and it wasn't until I got down to the core beliefs that if I didn't make as much money as my father than I wouldn't be loved or if I didn't look a certain way physically, then I wouldn't be excepted or sexually attractive all of these things… They lead to procrastination because it is the unconscious projection of the self into the conscious action. [10:38] How To Stop The Self-Sabotage Cycle Now let's break down the spirituality. Whether you believe in past life regression or epigenetic emotional transfer, where five generations of mice have been proven in scientific studies to exhibit trauma-based behavior, you have to realize that in this lifetime there is so much more than you see. So your next action step when it comes to a spiritual inventory of why you self-sabotage, and how to stop the cycle is to simply breathe and be still. You heard that right, breathe and be still. You're with me right now for a reason otherwise you would not be hearing my voice and so I'd like you to take three deep breaths with me. Now, after these three deep breaths, put your hand on your body where you feel the most pressure or tension, or discomfort. Maybe it's your hips, your glutes, your stomach, your throat, your forehead, your shoulders... Wherever you feel the most tension, go there right now and do three more deep breaths. Notice, the voice that I speaking to you is the same voice that is inside of you because you and I all come from the same place, the same creator of the same omnipresent, loving energy that has created all things and always has been. Let go of any dogmatism, religious training, spiritual or amygdala hijacking from the media, and just be with me right now take three more deep breaths. Notice, the only way you can stop a cycle from repeating is to have the courage to turn towards where the cycle comes from in the first place. And when it comes to spiritual inventory, the first place you must begin is at the altar of humility and forgiveness. Yes, people can treat self-sabotage by examining the root causes and stopping procrastination and looking at the bigger picture, and potentially even letting go of perfectionism as a coping mechanism for trauma. But the deeper more spiritual questions, you can ask right now in the stillness with your hand on your heart and the breath in your lungs is this. What is my self-sabotage wanting to teach me? (You may sit with this for moments or hours.) Is this feeling familiar? Have I felt this feeling before and can I go to the very first time I ever felt this feeling, right now? Can I trust myself to go to the very first time I ever felt this feeling right now? This memory, this event that you have been carrying for so long is asking for forgiveness and possibly asking for rest. In order to rest, you must lay something down, you must let go. What is it that you must let go of, and how can you ask the creator to give you the courage to let it go? What the heck is vibration? Today on Solocast, I'm going to answer that question in depth and so much more. As I talk about the true essence behind frequency. We all know about the levels of consciousness that we've heard about with the lower self-being 20 resonating shame or 1,000 for consciousness when you look at David Hawkins's work. But beyond Hawkins's work in the levels of consciousness, what does it mean when your nervous system, your mind, and really the essence of your soul get a good gut feeling or a bad guy feeling about a person, place, or thing? By the end of the Solocast, my promise to you is that you'll have a true understanding of Hawkins's levels of consciousness, how this relates to your own personal life, and most importantly what you can do with this concept of vibration to bring you more fulfillment in the five aspects of your wellness pentagon. If you're joining us for the first time, this may or may not be the best place for you to start you can check out our full guest interviews every Tuesday and on Thursdays, we do this Solocast, which is like the mental musings where I get to pontificate and project all the things that I am fascinated about when it comes to wellness. So if you're a wellness dork or if you're an enthusiast like me, every single episode on Thursday is going to be really really good because it's just me going forward with notes and kind of off-the-cuff, really authentic, sometimes vulnerable. I've cried in a few Solocasts, which is a good thing, especially for men.   [01:50] Emotional Frequency Scale So you heard that right? Everybody has a vibe that impacts us. What does frequency actually mean? Are you aware that in the world the globe vibrates at a hertz frequency that's either subtle, imperceptible, or corresponds to an individual vibration? Sometimes unnoticeable. You read that correctly. Everybody has a basal metabolic rate (BMR) and the rest but when life events occurred, and emotions are involved this vibrational rate changes dramatically and quickly. So, just like a child, which is the best way to learn; approach things with a heart and mind of a child, and as an adult with your own life experience, the big question for me is when it comes to frequency or emotional frequency: What is the missing link between heart rate variability, resting metabolic rate, otherwise known as RMR, and vibration to create vibrant health? Essentially, what can we learn about heart rate variability, resting metabolic rate, and the emotional frequency scale, or vibration in order for us to connect the dots and create better health from how our emotions dictate, and vice versa, our physiology? The snake eating its tail... Due to its potential to really make you a better version of yourself, it's crucial to comprehend the emotional frequency chart. Let's talk about this, I'm going to reference this at JoshTrent.com/504. There is a map here from nondualitylife.com to give them credit, it is a wonderful map. At the bottom of it is shame, at the top, it is full consciousness. What does that really mean? It means that every emotion has a frequency that it vibrates at and that we experience. In other words, a level of consciousness. I believe that Hawkins measured this in consciousness but you and I can also measure this in hertz. Hertz is something that tracks how many times something moves in one second. We've all heard about the Schumann resonance, or 432 frequency, or 556. There are many different frequencies that are used for Binaural Beats and Isochronic technology for giving people relaxation and the nervous system through sound. But how does understanding the emotional frequency chart help you become a better you? In today's society, people really aren't taught important life skills. Definitely not in school, and sometimes not at home, except for in our homes because you and I are very conscious so we do teach emotional frequency. And I'm going to unpack the layers of this today but a bigger question rises here as we pause.   [04:40] David Hawkins + Expression Of Our True Nature Now that you know the frequency chart from Hawkins and you understand that this level of consciousness can go all the way down to 20 Hz or 20 vibrations per second to 1000 vibrations per second for, a consciousness. What do all the stages between 20 and 1,000 truly mean? The victim abuse or consciousness from 20 Hz all the way to 200 the self-empowerment from 250 all the way to 400. And of course, the self-realization from 440 all the way to 1,000 is what allows people to go from hell to purgatory in between paradise and heaven. This is the conceptual framework that was developed by David Hawkins MD Ph.D. after a ton of research over 40 years of research. It looks at various mental states and psychological states as they connect to, and corresponds to the different levels of consciousness from 20 to 1,000. The approach is not very new anymore but it was new when it first came out. It is very much in line with the current wisdom traditions where higher levels of consciousness are used to correspondingly connect to greater psychological integration, and really just harmony with life. This conceptual approach delineates how one moves from the lower self or the smaller self. The lower one takes more scarcity-based states of consciousness to a higher self, or what Hawkins calls the absolute high. And through this journey, various conditionings, some scars along with different impurities, start to melt away. In the process really dismantles and purifies human beings allowing for a greater expression of our true nature, the level of the human. The model is an expression of the relative, so it is not to be taken as the expression of absolute truth, because we fluctuate through this level of consciousness, all day long. There are certain people, though that have certain characteristics of always being negative, always vibrating down at the victim consciousness, and we feel tired because I know you can relate to this when we are in their presence.   [06:57] Resting Metabolic Rate We know that the resting metabolic rate is a number that dictates how many calories a human being will consume completely at rest with no fidgeting, no exercise, just if you were to sit on the couch for the entire day, sleep, eat food, drink water, and literally not lift a finger for an entire 24 hour period. That would be your resting metabolic rate. So what is it that dictates are resting metabolic rate? Well, science would say it's your height, weight, age, gender, ethnicity, diet, activity level, and muscle... But I also believe that the thermic effect of food and a concept called the non-exercise movement or non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT), which is fascinating. This is knowledge from my old personal training days… So to calculate RMR, you would essentially put your factors into a calculator and you get a caloric number somewhere around 2000 cal or so depending on your physiology. So the answer to this, and this is what I'm going to prove to you today on this podcast... if somebody eats a perfect caloric diet and they are exercising well and they're doing the mouth of calories in calories out with their RMR then why is it that people still don't lose weight or gain muscle? What I'm going to hypothesize today is that you trust the connection between emotional frequency, HRV, RMR, and how every single one of them affects one another.   [08:33] Heart Rate Variability Let's go into an HRV. Now that we've talked about RMR, HRV is heart rate variability. It is the amount of time in between the beats of your heart and sciences show that a greater score of HRV can be in prime indicator of how long you live, how healthy you'll be, and even four diseases and afflictions like CHD, diabetes, and so many more. So now that you know what HRV is what increases your HRV score? In other words, what gives you a more diverse score around HRV? With HRV being the measure of variations in between each heartbeat measured in time, this variation is controlled by a very ancient part of the nervous system, called the autonomic nervous system, otherwise known as the ANS. We've talked about the autonomic nervous system very in-depth in our BREATHE: Breath & Wellness program, which you can be a part of. This conversation is geared towards that because I believe it is the breath that can set you free, and it is the breath that can increase your HRV, support your RMR, and be the fuel for your emotional frequency scale. I think they all connect, and I'm going to prove that today. So if the autonomic nervous system is housed in two compartments, one being sympathetic, one being parasympathetic, otherwise known as relaxation or fight or flight on the other side, then the brain is constantly millions and millions and millions of times per day processing information in a part of your brain called the hypothalamus. Here are the keys of vibrational habits which I'm in a moment going to tie to emotional frequency and the Hawkins scale. Here are the low-frequency habits that are coming from scarcity, coming from potentially just hedonism or apathy that drive a very low HRV score. The first is poor sleep, followed by alcohol, then smoking cigarettes, low physical activity, stress management, excessive caffeine, very poor posture, and of course, eating a diet that is not organic, and also genetics. There are some people that have a positive or negative impact via HRV and we know the HRV tends to naturally go down as we get older, but it doesn't have to it absolutely does not have to. As I mention chronic health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, anxiety, depression, and pulmonary disease, all of these things even medication's that people are taking or if you live in hot climates. I live in Austin and I would guess that most people's HRV score is lower because it's a super hot climate and makes you think about where you wanna live, right?   [11:05] Low Frequency: Hypervigilance + Unprocessed Trauma So now that we've unpacked HRV and RMR, and we've given you the beginning of the frequency scale, let me pull this all together, my friend. You're really going to enjoy this. Bare with me, we're about to go deep because we store unfavorable feelings very deep. We follow instructions and perform as intended until the program is terminated, and a new one is installed, but by the time we reach adulthood, we have so many unresolved issues that the majority of our reactions are inherently negative. These reactions are then in charge of unfortunate circumstances. That simply serves to confirm what we "already knew" from the past and distracts us in a vicious loop of emotional incidents, most of which are based on long-forgotten recollections from the past. So essentially the frequency of experiences, the frequency of emotions that are unfavorable from the past are literally driving the current moment because the body doesn't know any different, the body is a minor connected to all of this and this is what leads to hypervigilance. You can learn more about hypervigilance by going over to JoshTrent.com/490 where I go in-depth about the subconscious strategy for survival and what I believe mental illness is a symptom of in regards to hypervigilance and so much more than that. So these feelings of being a victim, combined with the assessment of others, evaluating oneself in relation to others, or comparing yourself to other people, is really a nervous system's tool for analyzing vibration. In other words, we project onto others what we feel about ourselves. So if I feel hypervigilant or non-trusting I'm going to unconsciously project that onto the person in front of me or the situation in front of me, and then that affects clearly my HRV and absolutely my resting metabolic rate because I'm going to need more calories, I'm not going to sleep as well, and I'm going to be shifted over to my sympathetic more throughout the day, which is the opposite of what the nature intended. But it's only when we embark on a journey of searching for the way of loving techniques and information and tools that we can begin, letting go of the lower frequency of these lower emotional reactions. This is a path that involves our whole lives and has a direct connection to love and complementing ourselves every time we manage to overcome these, potentially stressful situations, but really, they're not because we are choosing based on our past conditioning to make them three for 10 times more stressful than they actually are. So let's bring it home. Here the emotional frequency chart and Hawkins's work show the hertz frequency rate of this vibrational analysis all the way from low emotions to high. As the rate of vibration goes lower the extent of consciousness as well, and this is very key, the ability to deal with situations or things in a positive way is drastically reduced, which limits our discernment to respond or be responsible, which I've talked about many times on this podcast there is a difference between responsibility and being response-able. So when we find ourselves stuck in the spiderweb of the frequencies, like grief and shame and lying and deceit, it might seem so difficult and almost impossible to overcome things. But look, in this world, we are very fortunate to be here with each other right now. You are part of the solution, the fact that you were even listening to the Solocast means you are already on the way, my friend. You are already on the way and you are going through it because the only way out is through. Your resolve and your intelligence that was up leveled today now that you understand the connection between HRV and RMR, the academic science terms, and the actual emotional signature and quotient of the frequency scale. Combine these two things, and understand that you are a soul having a human experience inside of a body, and the more you can dive in and understand the emotional frequency chart the less you can put down your Oura Ring, put down your Woop, put down all the things that track your HRV and track your sleep and track your stuff. Because you and I both know those are external mirrors of mindfulness and all they're already doing is reminding you about the way that you already feel. It is only when we look within without judgment, with compassion for ourselves, that we can let go of the negative emotional attachments that keep us bathing in scarcity. And bathing at the bottom of the victimhood in those lower emotions of 200 all the way down to 20.   [16:40] What Is Your Emotional Frequency? So here is the action plan. First, take an emotional inventory I talked about that at JoshTrent.com/490. Take the emotional inventory to identify what beliefs you have or what emotions you're experiencing and then write your number down after each one and see where you fall. Are you in the category of victim, abuse, or consciousness? Are you in the category of self-empowerment? Are you in the category of self-realization the majority of the time? Well, I will tell you, because I've spent the past two years just like you, experiencing the nuclear fallout from an economic, mental health, the community split by the acts of what I believe is communism and mind control tactics by the most elite of the elite, who essentially run the world. I'm talking about the powers that be behind closed doors at Vanguard and BlackRock capital. I'm talking about $20 trillion that is managed by Vanguard and BlackRock and probably a lot more that just isn't showing publicly. All you have to do, and don't worry you won't go down the rabbit hole today and there's no tinfoil hat needed, is make the connections between the two largest capital firms in the entire planet, literally in the history of humanity, this much wealth has never been held by such few people. Now, the free market capitalist inside of you and inside of me is celebrating when people succeed, but there is a limit to the succession of financial gain when it comes to creating scarcity and fear, and pain for others. What do I mean by this? Let's dig in. All of the money in the world can be funneled into and out of the largest capital firms like Vanguard, and BlackRock, traced to, and from the federal reserve, which is a private company that is for profit which most people get wrong, and of course, traced to the United States federal government, and then that is where all the money supposedly gets applied to state and local city governments. But you and I both know if you've ever gone to get a driver's license or registration or a permit that the existential energy and every single office whether at a local city or federal level has a flavor doesn't it? It has a flavor of lies and frustration, like an existential pressure that we all can feel whenever we step foot into a government or authority organization. Now the father in me knows that order and structure, and a framework for chaos, which is life is necessary. But you and I also both know that too much structure allows for no flow and no energy to move from point a to point B. In other words, too much control given to too few people will ultimately yield corruption and that is exactly what we are seeing with the financial system. It's very important for you to listen to this episode.   [05:40] WHY THE TRUTH IS BEING HIDDEN FROM US Now back to the crime of the century. The reason we had to talk about money before that is because money created this CV!9 theater. Period and stop. If you look at the YouTube video interview with Jordan Peterson and Matt Ridley, the author of Viral: The Search For The Origin Of CV!9, titled The Origin Of CV!9, you will learn from the most accurate and observational research of the data that mainstream media is not sharing that there is a smoking gun when it comes to the Chinese communist party and their involvement in the leaking out of this virus that caused so much death and destruction and mind control. And emails now exposed the head of the NIH, the National Institute of Health is quoted: “We can't damage international harmony, we mustn't dampen the reputation of Chinese science.” And this, my friend, is the smoking gun, the Wuhan CV!9 research lab in China. Still to this day, has not released their files about what viruses they were working on at the time of the leak and the outbreak. When the Chinese lab was confronted by the United States government to release their records, they were told no. If this isn't the biggest smoking gun, that should allow natural sacred anger and sacred rage to come forth from you and I and us as a collective, then nothing ever will. What we have gone through over the past 2 and a half years is a vile and disgusting cover-up, to which there may never be forgiveness and tell the truth is exposed. Matt really continues to share with us through his research that conversations were controlled by the communist party in China here in America and censorship that was funded by. The CCP has been rolling out ever since the leak. Now I'm sure this episode is going to get flagged whenever you mention CCP or China or BlackRock or any of the terms I'm talking about automatically the technocrat agencies will flag this episode as a controversy or that you don't have the responsibility in your own mind to protect yourself against me. So they are going to place a huge blue or green or black label on this continent where you're listening or watching it to “keep you safe” and isn't that so disgusting that these technocrat agencies don't believe in you, they don't believe in your own agency and filter of information so they slap warnings on contact like this to “keep you safe “which is essentially hidden censorship. It should not surprise you by now, but there is a silver lining in this, which I will get to you in a moment.   [09:23] CV!9: A POLITICAL DISTRACTION? Essentially, what has been happening is that all media has been controlled and the entire Plandemic was used as a political distraction tool to divide people into pro-mask or anti-mask, pro job or anti-jab pro BLM or anti-BLM and it's all a fucking joke and a fucking lie and you and I both know it. This is divisional language 101. If you look at military tactics of war, the very first thing you do is that you put sides against each other then you confuse them, then you take away their resources, then you control the world and all of its people. Is it so hard to believe that at the highest level your attention is being controlled which will lead to the choices that disempower you and disenfranchise you from your very own freedom? This is why billions of minds were broken because the truth will set us free but in order to have freedom we must have freedom of press and freedom of speech which you and I both know absolutely was under siege over the past 2 and a half years and even more aggressively so now, which is why we're here on this podcast to get the mental physical, emotional, spiritual and financial truth about how we can support our wellness. Let's take a deep breath. I believe this is happening because we are in need of a collective and an individual wake-up call. The quote by Aristotle that Alan Watts has been very famous for is that nature abhors a vacuum. Nature hates a vacuum. Well, the vacuum that is being pulled on us by the media, and by those at the highest levels of power is sucking away our sovereignty and our individuality through the lens of “it's for your safety. The real reason for this pandemic and of this insanity is that we have to crack open so that light can pour out of us and into us. We are living as Paul Levy my guest on episode 503 next week will share in a collective dream. We will go much deeper into this topic next week, which I know you would love. The collective dream is that we are separate. We believe this dream of illusion that there is such a difference between the hearts in our chests, in the air that we breathe and the emotions that we all feel. We are taught that we are separate, but we are not. We are absolutely not separate. We never have been, and we never will be. So in order to come to the truth, we have to experience the vacuum the contrast, the darkness, the opposite of love. I don't know why God made it this way my friend, it makes me sad at times and it's definitely a spiritual maturation process for me to accept, but it is what it is and so what do we do about it now? You've heard me say many times since interviewing my friend and mentor Scott Jackson that we are at cause, but being at cause does not always mean that we are at fault. But it is with our compliance and our talking detail between her legs and wearing the masks and getting the jobs and following orders and hoping it will all go away… This is what perpetuates the darkness and perpetuates the attacks on the mind.   [13:08] STEPS TO BULLETPROOF YOUR MIND So let's talk about how to bulletproof the mind so you can be free of this control, tactic by the media and the highest elite power. The very first thing you must do is to place your phone on “do not disturb.” I know it's a very simple thing, but place your phone on do not disturb, next have specific times that you check social media. Once, twice, maybe three times a day, or just have specific days that you check social media. By the end of this Solocast, you are going to understand what epigenetics are, what gene expression happens through emotional trauma, capital T, lower-case T trauma, and why parents' emotional trauma may change, that science is showing their children's biology, literally, the biology. Think of it as the software, which is the trauma, can actually alter the hardware, which is our brain, our synapses, and so much more. So let's dig in. Here's a story that I can share with you to understand this concept of emotional epigenetics and why I believe it's the missing link in true holistic circular complete medicine today. Epigenetics is a rapidly emerging field of science that has massive implications on how we address our health and the health of our future children. The word literally means on top of the genes, and that pretty much describes the epigenetics role in the body. Look, all of us have DNA. Almost every cell in our body contains all of our DNA and all the genes that make us up. It's the fabric of who you are. This is known as the genome. But look, we're not just made of one cell. Our brains do many different things from those in our heart, for example, who behave differently than the cells in our toenails or our skin. If all of our cells have the same info, why is it that they do such different things? Well, this is where epigenetics comes in. It's basically a layer like an onion of instruction that sits on top of the DNA and gives it signals to turn off and on, and many other things. You can think of it like an orchestra. When you have a conductor with the symphony. Well, if the DNA is the music, the epigenome is the conductor, it waves its wand, it tells the cells what to do and when, and everybody has an orchestra inside. This is what biochemical individuality is. So while the epigenome doesn't necessarily change our DNA, it is responsible for deciding what genes will be expressed in your body's cells.   [03:30] "Genetics Load the Gun, Behavior Pulls the Trigger" We had Chris Kresser on the podcast, and I'll link that here in the show notes for the Solocast. He said something so profound. He said, "Genetics load the gun and behavior pulls the trigger," and just let that land for a moment. When we look at epigenetics, it's what sits on top of the DNA, on top of the genes. You are not... and I want to share this from my heart to yours, not a victim of what you were born with, what your parents did, or what your parents acted. So in other words, it's not your fault, but it is your loving responsibility. This is where things can get very challenging because if you listen to our episode with Scott Jackson about being at cause. We know that being at cause does not mean that it's your fault. There's a difference there. In the same way that we have this biological adaptation for epigenetics and epigenetic expression, I've been noodling on this for a while now, just try this on, just bear with me. If you receive certain genomic adaptations from your parents, like type 1 diabetes proclivity towards MTHFR, proclivity towards weight gain, proclivity towards sensitivity to sun, or sensitivity to caffeine based on your haplogroups. These are all things to consider from a physiological standpoint. But what about emotionally, what about emotionally, is it possible? Today, I'm going to make a case that it absolutely is. Is it possible that emotional epigenetics are the missing link in what is actually being manifested on a physical level? Here's why I believe this. Not only is the biological adaptation that we go through in life, a combination of our genes and our epigenetics, but also the stress that we incur both in-utero, and also, if you look at the work of Mark Wolynn, I'll link this, we've had him on the podcast twice. He wrote It Didn't Start With You. He's the founder of the Family Constellations, where they talk about past life trauma. So the trauma that happens, capital T, which is like physical sexual abuse, terrible things, lower case T, which is neglect, an unsupportive parent, an avoidant parent, an anxious parent. All of these things stack up. Now they're emotional trauma from parents, from in utero, from past life, maybe even from other dimensions. I mean, look, we're all figuring this out as we go along. We all know that emotional trauma can actually change our biology.   [06:12] Gene Expressions for Generations Studies show that suffering triggers changes in gene expression that last for generations. This is a study I came across that was fascinating. In Zurich, Switzerland, the children living in SOS Children's Village orphanages in Pakistan had a very rough start to life. Many lost their fathers, which in conservative Pakistani society can effectively mean losing their mothers too. Now, these widows often struggle to find enough work to support their families and may have to give up their children. That's one example. University of Zurich physician and neuroscientist Ali Jawad says that despite the support that these children received, they experience symptoms similar to PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder, including anxiety and depression. Now, this neuroscientist wondered about a potential hidden consequence of these children's experiences. He set up a study with the orphanages to probe the disturbing possibility that the emotional trauma of separation from their parents also triggers subtle biological alterations changes so lasting that the children might even pass them off to their own offspring. If you think about this in utero perspective, your grandmother was born with your mother inside of her, and your mother created you. So if that's the case, and we know now that epigenetic transfer happens on a biological level, then why wouldn't it happen on a psychosomatic level? I think it's so fascinating that people laugh at the idea that behaviors can be contagious. But we know from so many of the people we've had on the podcast that emotional contagion is utterly real. It is palpable. In other words, you're not just the sum of the five people you hang out with the most, you're the sum of all the behaviors of the people you choose to be around. Now, that idea would've been laughed at 15 years ago. But today, the hypothesis that a child's experience and adults' experience might actually alter the cells in behavior of their children that they bring into the world and the grandchildren that come into the world, it's now been accepted across the board.   [08:20] NLP: Neuro Linguistic Programming Look, in animals exposure to stress, cold or high-fat diets definitely triggers metabolic changes in later generations. There are some small studies that have been done on humans exposed to very traumatic conditions. Among them, the children of the Holocaust survivors point to biological and health changes in their children. So look, the implications of this are profound. If our experiences can have consequences that reverberate to our children, then to our children's children. This is a huge argument against everything from smoking to poor diet to toxic mentality. That's really the big one, toxic mentality. People that say things in families like, "Oh, that's just who we are. Oh, you're a Smith. Smiths are alcoholics." I mean, what an absolutely disempowering thing. And by the way, if you look at NLP and the barrier between the conscious and unconscious mind, when you are brought into the world zero through seven, at your seventh year, your brain has a lot of neuroplasticity and essentially your hemispheres have been connected for so long that you are so suggestible when you come into the world and you're so suggestible because all the programming in your brain, it actually unwires as you get older. It creates space for new programs. So how sad is it? Honestly, I'm like my hands on my heart right now. How sad is it that this emotional trauma that is very distinct from physical stress can be passed on to generations? Well, this is what was proven in this study. Let's dig in. In the study to explore how trauma affected generations of mice. Researchers stressed the mother mice, their little pups then exhibited both molecular and behavioral changes, such as taking more risks on an elevated maze. This is the key. These changes, they persisted for up to five generations, five generations. That's 3 to 500 years, you all. So the mother separated from the pups, and traumatized, the mother would ignore the offspring. The three-month-old male offspring made it with traumatized females. The offspring showed epigenetic and behavioral changes... this is the key, without having experienced the trauma, and that breeding carried out for six generations. I mean, look, if you're a scientific person, this study should be all that you need to know about emotional epigenetics. Why the trauma that we experience before we're even born while we're in utero and also in the first seven years of our lives and more, it's almost like we're all connected. It's almost like everything is all connected.   [11:04] Taking Emotional Inventory So here's the case that I'm making to you today, and I'm curious how you feel about this. If you can take a true emotional inventory of all the things that have happened for you in this lifetime that your soul chose to experience in quite a perfection, by the way, otherwise it wouldn't be experienced. Can you, number one, be at cause for the things that have happened for you in life? I'm not saying it's your fault. I know that terrible things happen, and I know that right now, maybe it's palpable for you. Maybe in your arms or your body and your stomach and your heart, maybe you feel like, "Fuck you, Josh. What are you even talking about? You think that me being raped, that me being abused, that me being hurt, that me being neglected, you think it's my fault?" No, that's not what I'm saying, my friend. What I'm saying is it's not your fault. It's not your fault. I think of that scene in Good Will Hunting, when Robin Williams was hugging his patient, Goodwill Hunting, and he said, it's not your fault over and over and over again, and finally Will just broke down crying. It's one of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen in a movie. You have to watch Goodwill Hunting. But it points to exactly what I'm talking about, because what I'm talking about is it is not your fault, but it is your responsibility. You can either be at effect or you can be at cause. So how do we unpack this in a way that truly provides a solution? Well, here we go. Number one, you must take an emotional inventory. I've talked about this in the Solocast on hypervigilance. You can go through that entire process because I want to move forward here with us today. Go to joshtrent.com/490. That's going to be the starting point for this emotional inventory process, which by the way, you know that if you experience hypervigilance, where if you ever feel like you're a junkyard dog and everything's fine. So why are you so stressed out and what's going on? This is where you start. You start with the emotional inventory, and I can speak from my own personal experience. To this day, at 42 years old, I still have an awareness of my own hypervigilance, the things that trigger me. I'll say that my hypervigilance is an expression of my epigenetics, and really the missing link for me to dive deep into and for all of us to dive deep into, because as above, so below, so below, as above. "You cannot have the tree reach its branches to heaven unless its roots touch hell," Carl Young. So what I'm saying here is if the missing link or the bridge between what appears for us, what manifests physically, cancer disease, rheumatoid arthritis, CHD, weight gain, liver issues, all these things, if they are a manifestation, and Chinese and Western medicine, show us that they are... If what we experience physically is a manifestation of what we are experiencing emotionally, energy in motion, then today, I know I've planted a seed in your garden that allows you to see the truth around if epigenetics express themselves physically because of what the cells were told by our parents' grandparents in utero and outside dimensions, then you know that after this podcast, you can see that the emotional energy that we experience as human beings, emotionally, these things get transferred too.   [14:28] Healing Addiction I think this is really something that is worth a deeper look on your own. It's going to be in the book that I write next year. It's going to be in many of the upcoming podcasts that we do. Emotional epigenetics, I believe is the missing link in holistic medicine. In holistic medicine, there is nutrition, breathing, water, thoughts, beliefs. Many of the ways that Paul Chek, Dr. Michael Ruscio, a lot of the people that we've had on the show who are experts in their field, they all approach these basic fundamental human behaviors. But what I love about Paul's work and what I love about my own work, too, is understanding what creates energy and motion. What I believe creates energy and motion and is the true missing link here is, the curiosity about discovering why energy is dysregulated, why energy is dysregulated. This is a part of this podcast that I really want you to feel before we say goodbye, and this is what you can take to the bank. If you are experiencing energy and you try to suppress or resist that energy, a part of your heart and soul knows that it always comes out sideways. In other words, why do alcoholics, drug addicts, porn addicts, shopping addicts, work addicts, why is addiction of any kind even a thing in anyone's life? It's because the opposite of addiction is connection. If you are connected to the energy that you're experiencing in your body, and you are courageously able to open up to that energy, to learn from that energy, to learn from the pain teacher, and to learn from the things that you are experiencing in a perfect way, otherwise they wouldn't be happening, then guess what? The more you lean into your emotional experience, the greater health, the greater wellness you will have, you will be. Period, end of story, full stop, new paragraph. This is it. Now, obviously, that is a sensitive issue because the moment that a human being starts to dig into their emotional inventory, starts to actually feel what they feel, starts to actually understand what the pain teacher, what these emotions are trying to tell them, well, then hypervigilance, the subconscious strategy that slowly kills us, this is what we talked about in the podcast, joshtrent.com/490. In that podcast, I go into depth about what hypervigilance is trying to tell us, but really what hypervigilance is, it's epigenetic expression of trauma; of trauma from an emotional standpoint that is trying to be let go of. It's always been said in many circles, what's coming is going, but what's coming that's blocked, never goes. So if that's the truth and there's something in your life, my life, all of our lives that is freaking asking for permission, it's asking for permission to be let go of, this is the ultimate question today, and this is what you can take and put in the bank as well. Can I cultivate the courage to take the emotional inventory, to feel the feelings I'm feeling, and to be honest with the challenge of my life? Can I be honest with the challenge of my life? Look, there's no shame if the answer to some of those questions was no. There was a major part of my life that was ruled by pornography for so long, and I think that these synapses that are wired, they do float away. They do uncouple. But in full transparency, I still have random thoughts of porn throughout the day. Do I act on them? No, I don't act on them because they don't hold the charge anymore because I've had the deeper work and the commitment to this deeper work be an everyday part of my life. My answer is like, "No, we can't," because every day is an opportunity.
