567: A Thanksgiving Feast of the Greatest Golf Book Ever! THE MATCH with author Mark Frost

567: In our previous episode, actor Malcolm McDowell talked about his favorite golf book ever, which so happens to be mine too. “THE MATCH: The Day The Game of Golf Changed Forever” by Mark Frost was published in 2008, but is a great read of nonfiction and in today’s 24 hour news cycle, an unbelievable story that was never told before this book. The audio book and book are both available at Amazon and here’s the write up to the story:   The year: 1956. Four decades have passed since Eddie Lowery came to fame as the ten-year-old caddie to U.S. Open Champion Francis Ouimet. Now a wealthy car dealer and avid supporter of amateur golf, Lowery has just made a bet with fellow millionaire George Coleman. Lowery claims that two of his employees, amateur golfers Harvie Ward and Ken Venturi, cannot be beaten in a best-ball match. Lowery challenges Coleman to bring any two golfers of his choice to the course at 10 a.m. the next day to settle the issue. Coleman accepts the challenge and shows up with his own power team: Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, the game's greatest living professionals, with fourteen major championships between them. In Mark Frost's peerless hands, complete with the recollections of all the participants, the story of this immortal foursome and the game they played that day--legendarily known in golf circles as the greatest private match ever played--comes to life with powerful, emotional impact and edge-of-your-seat suspense.”  This interview was originally published in 2008. Happy Thanksgiving!

564: A Club-focused Swing Can Be More Effective Than a Body-focused Swing

Manuel De la Torre was born above the golf shop at the Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro in Madrid, Spain, where his father Ángel de la Torre was the head golf professional. Angel was five-time Spanish National Golf Champion. Manuel's father's instruction and that of his father's friend and colleague Ernest Jones, served as the basis for de la Torre's instruction. His concepts for golf instruction have stood the test of time for over 60 years. He was head golf professional at Milwaukee Country Club teaching amateurs and tour professionals for more than 60 years.Recorded in 2009, this conversation is just as valid today as it was when we originally spoke. Unfortunately Manuel De la Torre died in the Spring of 2016, but we were honored to hear his opinion on why golfers spend too much time focusing on their body parts during the swing. Every body is unique and moves it’s own way. That’s why understanding the role of the golf club may allow you to be a much more successful, and less stressed ball striker. His book and DVD “Understanding The Golf Swing” are still available online. Here’s the address for the hardcover in Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Golf-Swing-Manuel-Torre/dp/1886346518/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478020703&sr=8-1&keywords=understanding+the+golf+swingHost Fred Greene is interested in hearing your opinion on this topic.
