My Connection to Abortion

This is my Mom’s story, which is now mine to share. She passed away on Thanksgiving Day of 2013 due to liver disease from alcoholism. The first time I got her into rehab, she wrote some journal entries. This was rare; my Mom did not write or keep any other journals. She also did not frequently express or process her true emotions. The day I did this recording was the day I was finally emotionally ready to read every word of the three letters about her pregnancy and what happened when she was pushed into traveling across the world to a foreign country by herself for an abortion when she was 18. What You’ll Learn:- What she wrote to her boyfriend in her “Letter to John” (I’ve changed his name to John, as in John Doe)- What she wrote in her “Letter to Baby”- What she wrote about her pregnancy and the aftermath- How her abortion story connects to my life- Where I now stand on the issue of abortion Knowing what I have come to learn about fear, emotions, trauma, and this human experience in general—I now understand that she was scared to death to feel her feelings. So she stuffed them away. Eventually, she drank them away. It breaks my heart to know she went through what she did. And then to consider that when she was 45, her whole world crashed down with our hot air balloon accident. I saw her lose so much—yet at that time, I had no clue how scary loss must have been for her.More stories need to be told about all kinds of life experiences. More people need to unlock the doors of rooms inside them where they’ve buried their feelings. More forgiveness and understanding will result. And then we won’t feel so divided.Life is full of paradoxes, and this story is just one of many examples of that.At the core, we are each dealing with the same inner challenges fundamentally; we’re dealing with our fears and the feelings we’ve locked away in our own inner rooms. Resources: - Take a look at some special photos of my Mom when she was 18, as well as my favorite photo of her later in life here: https://charisyourlife.com/blog/my-connection-to-abortion - Episode 005 How to Take Your Power Back: https://pod.fo/e/12fe39- Episode 009 The 28th Anniversary of the Hot Air Balloon Accident: https://pod.fo/e/132cd5 - Get support from my FREE training ‘Your First Step to Better Life Balance’ https://charisyourlife.com/freetraining - Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/charisyourlife - Follow me on Facebook: https://facebook.com/charisyourlife/ - Follow me on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/charisyourlife/- Follow me on YouTube: https://charisyourlife.com/youtube/- Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/charisyourlife/- Follow me on Pinterest: https://pinterest.com/charisyourlife/- My website: https://charisyourlife.com/

When Doubt Comes In

For a few years now, something I have done for fun is getting two season tickets to the Broadway shows in San Francisco and taking friends to the shows. I recently saw “Hadestown” with Tricia Stone, who was my first boss and incredible mentor after graduating college. A few weeks later, I saw “The Prom” with Christina Bryant, who worked for me for ten years. I was Christina’s first boss out of college—so I was to Christina what Tricia was to me. Both of these professional relationships evolved into special long-lasting friendships.Today I talk specifically about the show “Hadestown,” which intertwines the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and the tale of Hades, the King of the underworld, and his wife, Persephone.SPOILER ALERT: Skip from 4:34 to 6:26 in this episode if you don’t want to hear key details about the plot of the Broadway show “Hadestown.”What You’ll Learn: - What the real road of life is- Why does doubt come into our minds- Why fear and sabotaging thoughts show up in our daily lives- How practicing trust can lessen our doubts and quiet our fearsI want you to doubt your doubts. Get curious about them. Are those doubts just thoughts keeping you from things that would bring you more joy and true fulfillment?Resources: - Take a look at fun photos of me with Tricia and Christina when we went to the Broadway shows here: https://charisyourlife.com/blog/when-doubt-comes-in - Hadestown musical: https://hadestown.com/ - Check out my FREE training ‘Your First Step to Better Life Balance’ https://charisyourlife.com/freetraining - Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/charisyourlife - Follow me on Facebook: https://facebook.com/charisyourlife/ - Follow me on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/charisyourlife/- Follow me on YouTube: https://charisyourlife.com/youtube/- Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/charisyourlife/- Follow me on Pinterest: https://pinterest.com/charisyourlife/- My website: https://charisyourlife.com/

Life Lessons from My Time as a Dancer

I spent a lot of time at my dance studio during childhood—the Tri-Cities Academy of Ballet was like a second home to me and the owners/teachers, Joel & Debra Rogo, became an extended family, as did my fellow dancers. Many big life moments happened while I was at the studio, including the moment the First Gulf War began (while my brother was on the front lines as a sniper in the Marines) and the first time I asked someone out on a date. Today, I’m going to share five life lessons that I learned from my time as a dancer. What You’ll Learn:  Why it’s often best to mold something to fit you instead of molding yourself to fit it How focus is a proactive behavior that can help you move from fear to freedom Why loosening up and stretching (physically and emotionally) is beneficial How balance is not static and requires constant realignment How the real purpose is not to get to a certain place, but to enjoy each step These are just five of the many powerful life lessons I learned from being a dancer. Whether or not you have ever danced, you can apply these teachings to your own life so that you can live a life with more freedom, ease, and joy. Resources: - Take a look at fun photos of me dancing ballet and jazz at various ages here: https://charisyourlife.com/blog/life-lessons-from-my-time-as-a-dancer - Check out my FREE training ‘Your First Step to Better Life Balance’ https://charisyourlife.com/freetraining - Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/charisyourlife - Follow me on Facebook: https://facebook.com/charisyourlife/ - Follow me on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/charisyourlife/- Follow me on YouTube: https://charisyourlife.com/youtube/- Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/charisyourlife/- Follow me on Pinterest: https://pinterest.com/charisyourlife/- My website: https://charisyourlife.com/

28th Anniversary of the Hot Air Balloon Accident

Today is the 28th anniversary of my family's hot air balloon accident. In this episode, I share with you some details about that day, the aftermath, and a few reflections I have on it. I also share three gifts I’ve been able to find in that experience. What You’ll Learn: - What happened the night before my Dad’s 50th birthday - What the consequences of the hot air balloon accident were- How I reacted to the event and what my coping mechanism was- How this experience led me to an unhealthy pattern of behaviors in my life- The three gifts I found that came from this tragedy Here I am, 28 years later, as a coach and mentor, because of what my family went through and the path it took me on. I am now using my experiences to help others heal from their own traumas that have pushed them into unhealthy coping mechanisms of becoming busy worker bees at the expense of their health and happiness. And every time I share, every time I teach and coach, another piece of me heals in that process.Resources: - Go here to see photos of my Dad being goofy the afternoon before our ride, me and my family watching the hot air balloon fill up, and beautiful vistas of Eastern Washington taken during our ride: https://charisyourlife.com/blog/28th-anniversary-of-hot-air-balloon-accident - Check out my FREE training ‘Your First Step to Better Life Balance’ https://charisyourlife.com/freetraining - Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/charisyourlife - Follow me on Facebook: https://facebook.com/charisyourlife/ - Follow me on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/charisyourlife/- Follow me on YouTube: https://charisyourlife.com/youtube/- Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/charisyourlife/- Follow me on Pinterest: https://pinterest.com/charisyourlife/- My website: https://charisyourlife.com/

Today, I'm going to share four of the most beneficial changes I've made personally to manage myself, and thereby manage my time, so much better than ever before. What You’ll Learn: - How to work with your natural daily energy cycles instead of just powering through the day- Why you need to understand and embrace the concept of the ‘zone of genius’- How your external environment can influence how you manage your time- Why it is necessary to set boundaries with the alerts on your electronic devicesThese four changes are some of the most impactful things that I've done to manage my time more effectively. They have not only led to more productivity, but they've also created a healthier life for me in all ways. To get more tips, tricks and tools about time management, check out my Time Management Mini-Course at https://charisyourlife.com/time Resources: - ‘The Big Leap’ by Gay Hendricks https://amzn.to/3mrQcPS - ‘The Genius Zone’ by Gay Hendricks https://amzn.to/3NwCuaj - Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/charisyourlife - Follow me on Facebook: https://facebook.com/charisyourlife/ - Follow me on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/charisyourlife/- Follow me on YouTube: https://charisyourlife.com/youtube/- Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/charisyourlife/- Follow me on Pinterest: https://pinterest.com/charisyourlife/- My website: https://charisyourlife.com/

How to Take Your Power Back

Too often, we give up our own personal power in ways we don’t even realize. You may be giving away your power by people pleasing, seeking approval, avoiding setting boundaries, not asking for what you want, blaming yourself, trying to save others, and in many other ways. In this episode I’ll share with you some ideas for how you can take your power back. What You’ll Learn:- How to check in with yourself instead of seeking external validation- Why negotiation is a great alternative to giving up on asking for what you want- How practicing forgiveness can stop you from ruminating over the past or worrying about the future- How acknowledging the smallest movement forward in your life can replace self-deprecating comments and thoughts  - Why you should start practicing taking your power back with small things in your lifeThere are many possible ways you can take your power back. As you start shifting even just one of these things, you're going to likely start feeling a little more in control of your life. Not all of them may not be easy or comfortable. Fill Up Your Energy Tank Before You Feel Depleted

So many times in the past, I have been in the head-down zone, hyper-focused on my goals, working many nights and weekends, for weeks and months at a time, not paying attention to my body's fuel gauge. Then, I’d find myself totally depleted, and it would take weeks, months, or even years to replenish. In this episode, I want to help you understand the importance of filling up your energy tank before you hit burnout. What You’ll Learn: - What happened to me as a result of taking care of business while neglecting myself- How learning about neuroscience helped me understand what happened with my brain during burnout- The four characters in our brain as described by neuroanatomist, Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D.- A visualisation that can help you create some breathing room In order to avoid feeling depleted and burned-out, you need to create some white space in your schedule, otherwise you're just continuing to loop around a racetrack. You have to make a commitment to yourself, start saying no to some things and saying yes to self-care. Although it’s not easy to just flip that switch, know that you are not alone and there is help and support available to you. Resources: - Check out my free training ‘Your First Step to Better Life Balance’ at https://charisyourlife.com/freetraining   - ‘Whole Brain Living’ by Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D. https://amzn.to/3Nm8JYU- ‘My Stroke of Insight’, TED Talk by Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D. https://ted.com/talks/jill_bolte_taylor_my_stroke_of_insight - Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/charisyourlife - Follow me on Facebook: https://facebook.com/charisyourlife/ - Follow me on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/charisyourlife/- Follow me on YouTube: https://charisyourlife.com/youtube/- Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/charisyourlife/- Follow me on Pinterest: https://pinterest.com/charisyourlife/- My website: https://charisyourlife.com/
