16 I How should we choose a wedding photographer? (Wedding Wednesday Quick Tip)

Text the Wedding Planning HotlineNOTES:There are so many wedding photographers out there. It's hard to know which one will be the best fit for you. In this case, Instagram is your friend. Start with a local hashtag such as #hudsonvalleyweddingphotographer or #newyorkweddingphotographer. Look at people's portfolios and try to understand what you like and don't like about their photos. All photographers have different editing styles. Some like their photos to look lighter and brighter. Others like their photos to be a little warmer. Some like their photos darker and moodier. If you don't know what you like, knowing what you don't like will still be helpful. Interview your top 3 prospects either in person or with a video call. They'll be with you for the majority of the day and capturing your most intimate moments, so you want to make sure you're not just comfortable with them, but love them too.If you liked this episode, please SUBSCRIBE and connect with me at  http://asktheplannerpodcast.com/

8 I Cake and Desserts (Wedding Wednesday Quick Tip)

Text the Wedding Planning HotlineBefore we get to today’s tip, I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and happy holidays. Thanks so much for listening to the podcast wherever you are. On a personal note, I’ll be taking the next few weeks off to be with my family. Our next episode with Molly Hartley and Jenn McClure of Scratch Bakeshop will air on January 5th 2021. It’s so weird to say that. Ahh!Anyway, talk to you guys in In the new year (unless we DM on Instagram. And if we’re not, why aren’t we??! Come say hi to me @verveeventcoAnyway, on with the tip!Today’s tip is a compilation of my past tips regarding your cake and desserts. It’s a little preview of what we’ll be talking about in our next episode when we resume after the holidays. Enjoy!Tip 016: Don't Forget Your Cake StandWhen it comes to your wedding cake, don't forget to think about how the cake will be displayed. Ask the cake baker, What color and dimensions will the cake board be? That's the piece of wood your cake sits on. You want to make sure your board matches the color of your cake stand and that the cake stand you have is the proper size. If you're buying the cake stand, make sure you get it well in advance. You want to make sure it's sturdy enough to support the weight of a wedding cake AND it's wide enough. Most cake stands that you would buy "off the shelf" are smaller and not properly sized for a wedding cake.Tip 017: Avoid These Unique Wedding Cake FlavorsMore cake tips! I'm all for unique and personalized food, but be wary of asking for cake fillings made of anything that is seasonal, such as fruit. Also, temper your expectations if you're asking for something exotic, like a mango curd and you don't live in a climate that grows mangoes. We had a mango curd filling in our cake that was PHENOMENAL. But our baker warned us that we might need to go to Plan B if she couldn't get mangoes that were the right variety and ripeness when our wedding came. Luckily, she did and it was AMAZING, but I knew she was a little stressed about it. (Shout-out to Anita Gupta of Maliha Creations in Charlottesville, VA!)Tip 018: How to Make Your Wedding Cake Stand OutThis is my last cake tip for the week. Promise! Instead of serving a traditional, round 3-tiered cake, consider changing it up a bit. Make the tiers different heights for a more modern and artistic look. For example, make the bottom tier a little shorter and fat, make the middle tier taller and make the top tier in between. Or even make the cake asymmetrical. This will make your cake stand out from all the other cake your guests have seen and tasted.
