En effet, aujourd’hui nous consommons de manière excessive des ressources tout en détruisant un écosystème naturel après l’autre, sans avoir réellement pris une décision ou avoir eu un choix. Les décisions qui déterminent nos exploitations naturelles sont souvent prises à petit comité grâce à la propriété de foncier et de capital. Quelles alternatives existent-elles pour une gouvernance plus démocratique et directe de l’usage de nos ressources et la protection de l'environnement ? Quel rôle pourrait jouer les communs dans une transition socio-écologique ? Doit-on abolir la propriété ?🎓 Pour nous éclairer sur ce sujet, j’ai le plaisir d'accueillir Fabien Locher. Fabien Locher est Chargé de Recherche au CNRS. Ses recherches portent sur l’histoire environnementale, et plus particulièrement l’histoire des sciences du climat, de l'atmosphère, de la terre et des océans, ainsi que de l’histoire des formes de gouvernement des ressources. Today I am very pleased to share a two-part episode on exploring the current and future resource use and climate impact of mobility. In fact, mobility is responsible for a large part of CO2 emissions, energy use and material use both for the construction of vehicles and for its associated infrastructures.This two part episode is a collaboration with the Urban Mobility Explained (UMX), a YouTube channel powered by EIT Urban Mobility (https://www.youtube.com/@urbanmobilityexplained). You can check out their channel and some of their videos as every week they cover quite broadly environmental and social impacts of mobility and solutions from cities around Europe. To explore the resource use impacts of mobility I am glad to welcome Karel Van Acker. Karel is professor in sustainable materials management @KU Leuven. His research develops strategies to realize the circular economy and on sustainability assessments of material life cycles.On PART 1 Karel and Aristide laid the groundwork for the main cornerstone of clean mobility (i.e. metals), this PART 2 moves from the materials level to the applications level. Today I am extremely happy to talk about a concept that integrates the care of our planet, the care of people and a just and fair share for all humans and non humans. This concept rethinks our land use and agricultural system based on ecological principles in a world with little to no fossil fuels. 🍩 Numerous scholars propose post-growth or doughnut economics as a vision for a desirable, just and ecologically restorative future. 🌃 What is the relationship between cities and economic growth ? During the last 50 years cities were both the driver of and driven by neoliberal economy. Building malls, tunnels, parkings, flashy condominiums and other expensive landmarks have created a new type of urbanism which embeds financial flows in the built environment. Today, it is hard to imagine a city that does not grow both spatially and financially. This spatial specialization of cities is now stripping them from space to satisfy its own needs in terms of food, manufacturing and energy production. It is also stripping cities from the necessary labour to carry out its ecological redirection and reparation. As such, this episode will try to question how to break this reinforcing loop between cities and economic growth.🎓 To help us explore what would post-growth cities could look like and how to implement them, I have the pleasure to discuss with Federico Savini. Federico is an Associate Professor in Environmental Planning, Institutions and Politics at the University of Amsterdam. He combines approaches of political sociology, urban planning and critical geography to study the pathways towards a form of urbanization that thrives within planetary boundaries.
