S9 Ep993: #993 - Why Romans 7 is NOT Talking about Christians: Dr. Joey Dodson
Dr. Joseph (Joey) Dodson is the Craig L. Blomberg Endowed Chair of New Testament at Denver Seminary. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and continued his studies at the University of Tübingen in Germany. He has written a number of articles for peer review journals such as Harvard Theological Review, Novum Testamentum, the Journal for Jewish Studies, and Catholic Biblical Quarterly. His most recent books include The Things I Want to Do: Romans 7 Revisited (forthcoming), A Little Book for New Bible Scholars with E. Randolph Richards (2017) and a co-edited volume with David E. Briones, Paul and Seneca in Dialogue (2017). Dr. Dodson’s current research includes a Romans commentary in the Brill Exegetical Commentary Series and a Colossians-Philemon commentary in The Christian Standard Commentary Series. And–Joey is my best friend. We met at Aberdeen years ago and have been joined at the hip ever since. In this conversation, Joey shows why Romans 7 is NOT talking about a Christian, but a pre-converted first century Jew.

S9 Ep992: #992 - Is Ethnic Reconciliation Part of the Gospel? Preston Sprinkle
Is ethnic reconciliation an essential part of the gospel, or is it an optional add on? In this solo episode, I argue for the former, that part of the reason why Christ came, died, and was raised from the dead was to create “in one new humanity” (Eph. 2) a multiethnic kingdom and church. After giving a long personal narrative about why this topic is important to me, I work through several key passages integral to the storyline of Scripture including: Genesis 12, Acts 2, 6, 8, 13, Galatians 2-3, Ephesians 2-3, and Revelation 5.

S9 Ep990: When Leaders Fall…and Are Restored: Evan Wickham and Scott Curran
Evan Wickham is the co-founder and lead pastor of Park Hill Church in San Diego. Scott Curran is an administrative assistant and teacher at the church. Over a year ago, Scott confessed to Evan that he had committed sexual immorality as he was a leader/teacher at the church, and Evan and the leaders beautifully navigated what it looks like to address this situation with grace, truth, and authenticity.

S9 Ep989: Rethinking Orphanages: Brandon Stiver
Are orphanages helping orphans? Most Christians would say: obviously yes. But Brandon, who’s been working in orphan care for over a decade, says that they are actually perpetuating a system of care that is ultimately not helpful for orphans. Kids belong in families, and there are many other more healthy ways to help kids be raised in a family.
Brandon is the senior director of global programs and partnerships for 1MILLIONHOME–an organization aimed at revolutionizing orphan care through broadly shifting mindsets and scaling up proven community-based models that reunite children with families and eradicate practices that lead to family separation. Brandon has worked in the child welfare and nonprofit sectors for over twelve years. Before joining 1MILLIONHOME, he led a family based care and advocacy program in Tanzania for several years. Brandon has also worked at a Tanzanian orphanage, in the Californian foster care system, at various churches and teaches on issues facing at risk children at the university level. He has his Master’s Degree in Global Development and Justice and is passionate about indigenous leadership, community mobilization and seeing global entities come together to deliver the best care for at risk children.

It’s that time again, folks! My Patreon supporters sent in a plethora of scintillating questions this month. I addressed many of them in my Patreon-only Q & A podcast, but there were still a few questions I wanted to address on the podcast podcast, which I do so here.

S9 Ep987: Christian Reflections on the 4th of July: Justin Giboney
Justin joins me on this 4th of July to talk about how Christians should think about the holiday. In particular, how should Christians, whose allegiance should be unwavering toward “no king but Jesus,” celebrate the 4th? Or–should we celebrate? What do we do with the dark history that is part of the American story? What about all the good that America has done? What is that good? How do African Americans think through the 4th? Justin and I kick it around in this episode. Justin Giboney is an attorney and political strategist in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also the co-founder and president of the AND Campaign.

Dr. Scott Rae (Ph.D. USC) is Dean of the Faculty and Professor of Philosophy and Christian Ethics at Talbot School of Theology. He’s also a consultant for ethics for four Southern California hospitals and is a fellow of the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity and a fellow of the Wilberforce Forum. S9 Ep985: A Review of Matt Walsh’s “What Is a Woman?”
Matt Walsh from The Daily Wire released a provocative new documentary called “What Is a Woman?” In it, he interviews several scholars, medical professionals, and common people to hear their answer to the question. It’s created quite a buzz, so I watched it twice and took lots of notes. In this podcast, I talk about my pros and cons of the documentary.
Watch the documentary HERE. (It’s behind a paywall.)
