Theology in the Raw

Ryan has a Ph.D. in Theology from Wheaton College and is Associate Professor of Theology at Talbot School of Theology and Biola University in La Mirada, CA. He’s also the author of The Imago Dei as Human Identity: A Theological Interpretation, which is the topic of his Ph.D. dissertation.  Ryan and I talk about the concept of identity from both a theological and sociological perspective. The launching point of our discussion is the provocative article by Rogers Brubaker and Fredrick Cooper, “Beyond Identity” https://www.jstor.org/stable/3108478 Is identity essential to our humanity, socially constructed, a blend of both, and how do we know, and why does it matter? Are we ______ because we say we are ________? Or is our identity rooted in nature? Aaron Keyes is a singer/songwriter, pastor, speaker, and has not only been a worship leader for over 20 years, but has discipled and trained hundreds (if not thousands) of other Christian worship leaders. What does it mean to have the gift of celibacy (or singleness)? Does it mean that you don’t desire sex or marriage? Or that you’ve been given an extra booster shot of the Holy Spirit that gives you radical immunity to sexual temptation (or at least prevents you from serious spiriutal hospitalization)? What actually was Paul talking about when he said that “it’s better to marry than to burn?” (1 Cor 7:7-8).  Dr. Dani Treweek is both single and a theological expert in singleness, having recently completed her Ph.D. on a theology of singleness and who’s publishing a book titled “The Meaning of Singleness” (IVP 2023). Gerry holds to a view of women in leaders that’s sometimes considered “soft complementarian.” He believes women can serve in any position of leadership and teaching in the church, except for elders, since one of the criteria for being an elder (or overseer) is “a husband of one wife.” Gerry explains his view in this podcast episode.  Gerry has an MDiv from Denver Seminary and a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Fuller Seminary. Writing a book on transgender idendities as a non-trans person is a bit bold, some might say audacious. This is why I decided to open myself up to my friend Seda, who is a transwoman. Dr. Joseph (Joey) Dodson is the Craig L. Blomberg Endowed Chair of New Testament at Denver Seminary. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and continued his studies at the University of Tübingen in Germany. He has written a number of articles for peer review journals such as Harvard Theological Review, Novum Testamentum, the Journal for Jewish Studies, and Catholic Biblical Quarterly. His most recent books include The Things I Want to Do: Romans 7 Revisited (forthcoming), A Little Book for New Bible Scholars with E. Randolph Richards (2017) and a co-edited volume with David E. Briones, Paul and Seneca in Dialogue (2017). Dr. Dodson’s current research includes a Romans commentary in the Brill Exegetical Commentary Series and a Colossians-Philemon commentary in The Christian Standard Commentary Series. And–Joey is my best friend. We met at Aberdeen years ago and have been joined at the hip ever since.
