Extreme Diets for Extreme Diseases

Would you drastically change your diet and sleep cycle if you had a serious disorder like ulcerative colitis or lupus to see if you could heal your illness naturally? It is a trade-off of extreme diets for extreme diseases versus extreme treatments.   This week, Dr. Kahn features two examples of extreme but successful diet programs, one for autoimmune diseases like SLE (lupus) and one specifically for Crohn's and Colitis.   The authors of the two books featured do offer consultation on achieving success against these extreme therapies. Vitamin K2 is Helpful and HDL-C is Harmful? New Insights

It is said that 50% of what is taught in medical school is wrong, but no one knows which 50%! For 50 years it has been taught that a low HDL cholesterol is a danger while a high HDL-C is protective.   This week, Dr. Kahn discussed new data that completely changes that simple formula and turns it on its head. Before that, Dr. Kahn discussed how vitamin K plays a role in certain proteins, including Matrix Gla Protein, to prevent calcification of arteries and valves.   A study using high dose Vitamin K2/M7 to prevent valve calcium has been published and it has mixed finding. The heart artery findings are hidden and provocative.

Long-Haulers: New Approaches

Long-haulers used to refer to truckers on a long drive but now it is one of the terms used to describe a prolonged period of illness after a Covid-19 infection or a Covid-19 vaccine. Post-acute sequelae of Covid (PASC) is another term used in the medical literature.   As a referral center, Dr. Kahn has been asked to consult on several patients suspected to have this syndrome. What is it? How is it diagnosed? What are the resources to use? Is there any therapy?   Beyond the potential therapies discussed this week, some have reported responses to IV vitamin drips and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). No therapy is FDA approved.    Learn more on this edition of Heart Doc VIP.

The Importance of Liver-Heart-Body Connections

While the Kahn Center is a cardiac clinic, Dr. Kahn deals with issues throughout the body as many conditions produce a network of diseases.   One example is the very common condition called NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or NASH).   A new term is MAFLD for metabolic associated FLD to stress the whole-body connection.   This week the focus is on detecting NAFLD, searching for heart disease risk in those with it, and reversing it with data and supplements. Weight loss and the fasting-mimicking diet (PROLON) are also of use.

Heart Disease in the Young: Start Early on Health

The most common form of heart disease is atherosclerosis. This is a slow clogging and aging of arteries throughout the body that can start even in childhood. The earlier a healthy lifestyle program is started, the more effective it will be.   This week, Dr. Kahn reviews 3 new studies on aspects of heart health in those under 50 years of age. Even as young as 18. The message is clear: start young and stay on track.   Another topic addressed is the release of the CORDIOPREV nutrition study in Spain regarding whether heart patients respond better to high olive oil vs lower-fat diets. The results are stunning.   Thanks to memoryhealth.com for sponsoring this week's episode.

Word Salad: Carotenoids and Polyphenols

If you want a mouthful of nutrition, eat a salad and learn about carotenoids and polyphenols. The terms are technical but they help understand why brightly colored plant-based foods, some whole and some raw, are the key to optimal nutrition.   Dr. Kahn discusses the carotenoids in Memory Health, and also another one with heart support called astaxanthin. He then moves to the classes of polyphenols found in chocolate, teas, apples, and onions like quercetin. You will be smarter and healthier for the listen.
